I don't doubt that it was in bad shape, but between the brand new mantel, and the wet mud, it looks like you did it for effect. Making it look like new was a very good job.

It looked like shit even without the dirt. He restored it in the end so why does it matter. It's content.
@paranrs
@paranrs Жыл бұрын
@@BLKninjas It matters because it was faked for no reason. This lantern clearly needed some work, but purposely caking it with mud was just silly showmanship. Especially since it was so obvious that it was done for the video. It's also funny how it had a perfectly clean and unburned mantle installed. There were lots of things that detracted from the veracity of the video. Additionally, this was a nickel plated lantern originally. It's very suspicious how all the parts suddenly became polished or plated brass, even the parts that were made of steel. I suspect that the lantern seen at the end of the video was not the same lantern.

@@paranrs Yeah, I'm watching this for the first time myself and I'm thinking the same thing within the first 30 seconds of the video; the lamp looks like it's in perfectly serviceable, even good, shape, and like a bunch of filth was added artificially to make it LOOK trashed. It doesn't look like it needs a restoration at all, more like someone needed the views and a bump from the algorithm.

I am old enough to have seen this lamp in use. In fact it was called “petromax lamp” for this type of lamp regardless brands. In the afternoon my father will fill in the kerosene, light it up, and left it to me to pump the air pump to make it bright. As what other commented here, you should really show how it works in the end. Great job!

Was soll das Fett dort? German, Above English I already watched the video 2-3 months ago and was actually really impressed. And now looked at and zapped through again. Initially, I was enthusiastic. Here, however, a "chrome" lamp is transformed into a brass lamp. Now I have looked at the individual work steps again in detail. Actually, I can't get out of shaking my head. In order to be a perfect restoration, the parts with damaged nickel plating would have had to be brightly nickel-plated again. Removing nickel from a bright nickel-plated Petromax with hydrochloric acid and then sanding everything down is a rework, but not a restoration. Cleaning a Petromax with hydrochloric acid is like shooting at sparrows with cannons. At 2:05 minutes, the lamp is violently violated for an unseen, stubborn reason and the soldered nut is flexed off. In the course of this mischief, the tank is dented at the carburetor opening. To then hammer it again and grind out the hammered dents. At 02:05 and 02:07 the nut of the centering screw was also removed. The new rivets are also a oversized. Covering the clay burner with stove varnish can also be described as nonsense. The centering disc is also black. that's actually nonsense, it's not optically smart. With the NewComponents, the carburetor gasket was not exchanged. missing lead washer partnumber #90 The more I see the scene with the Flex, i.e. 02:13, the more I have to shake my head. No pinch seal is used on the carburetor. The graphite packing was of course not changed either. At 14:55 the pump valve is assembled incorrectly. All possible screw connections are lubricated with a grease. Nobody understands either, it'll swim in petroleum, a solvent, anyway. What's that fat doing there? Rust protection for brass? But the leather is dry as a fart and unlubricated. The eccentric is senselessly greased on the inside where the petroleum dissolves the grease, also on the thread. At 19:41 you can see how broken the tank was actually made in this video. At the beginning of the video it was still a 1A tank. Brass, no dents or bulges. On the turntable you can clearly see how crooked this lamp is now and how the hood moves excentric after the screwed-in carburetor linkage. I bet the carburetor is now on the ground and can no longer be completely installed. The pinch seal is not installed and can no longer be installed because the few mm space to the bottom of the tank are now missing. The pump does not work. Carburetor linkage and needle not adjusted. No leak test of the tank. Will probably not be possible in this state anymore. On the turntable you can now see if you pay attention to the stained, the places that were not smeared with force are still chrome-colored / nickel-plated. The other shiny yellowish brass. Once the brass has a little patina it will be even more noticeable. It is now also clear why no "result" is presented at the end. The lamp just doesn't light up in the end. This is a prime example and a video documentation of how not to refurbish a Petromax. This lamp will only shine again with massive effort, if this is possible at all. Here a dignified Petromax 821E, with a bit of patina, was violently destroyed. The starting product would have required a pump bottom valve insert, a carburetor valve insert, a graphite packing, a pressure gauge seal, a clay burner and a glowsocj as a spare / wearing part. And a little cleaning with soap and citric acid. Then this lamp with patina would have shone again. But i guess it won't ever be lit. What a waste. Still facepalming.
@cavebeat3376
@cavebeat3376 3 жыл бұрын
ahh, and the mud looks fake. the glowsock is not dirty. the inner hat is not rusty. whats that clamp? why is is put onto the clay burner afterwards. Why not just knotting the new sock onto the burner? I bet, you haver never ever lit a gas pressure lamp yourself. Neither is the lamp in this video ever shining in your hands again.

Ok, but I think it's not perfect restoration, because old one seems chrome plating and restored seems like brass. Well, chrome plating leaves toxic water and golden finish looks good. My other problem is that it looks somewhat unlikely to find it in mud in that good condition so "before restoration" part looks somewhat fake to make it worse, but it's in good condition. I think it's more likely to be found in horrible mess in some shed with rust, dust, broken glass and spider webs. Great job otherwise.

I've restored many gas pressure lanterns. So I noticed how funny it is that this lantern, originally nickel plated, suddenly became polished and plated brass. Even the parts that were made of steel suddenly look like brass. I suspect that the entire lantern was replaced. Also, why did you put mud on the lantern? There was no need to do that. You don't need to fake things.

When you mount the the nozzle on top of exuberator you must make sure the needle is turned to the top. I did not see you make the measurement for the emulsion tube. this way this lamp is never gonna burn in a proper way.

Your body work hammering on copper / brass is a lost art it is very delicate to over hammer and stretch you have a lot of knowledge in your handy work.

Seemed like a complicated piece. I guess it is German made though... I do hope you got it running. Very pretty in the end and a long way from the starting point.

It was a silver lamp, but it became gold. ;-) Now it is terrible to touch hands. I did not have the test. It would be very interesting to see.

@@aleromero1981 the lamp is Made of Brass so the original material color is "gold" but there are two versions of the lamp one in gold and one with some silver metal coatings
