After watching Mel’s videos, I’ve been self observing and realize just how much my procrastination/fear/doubt has been dominating me. I’ve been using the “5 second rule” and actually been slaying lately. Doing stuff I was so fearful of. Thus, becoming able to do the even “scarier” stuff. Thank you, Mel! Your videos are truly life-changing. 💖

This is THE MOST important thing i have heard in my entire life. Never in my wildest dreams i would think it would take 5 seconds to change my life. Thank you Mel!❤️

I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. kzbin.infoUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

God it's so simple, yet so powerful! I've always struggled with actually acting - great with goals (oh buddy let me tell ya the plans I've got...) - shit at execution. Cue doubt, self-depreciation, depression, find new motivation, set new goals, repeat downward spiral, etc etc... Some people can achieve great things on passion alone. When you've built as many 'failure-loops' as I have, I self-sabotage myself before I can get started. But everything great was built one bit at a time. It's cutting through the doubt, the past, the physical pain of starting that moves me towards my goals. The 5 second rule is incredible in how it cuts through all the bullshit. I literally feel my mind reset and focus on what I need to do. Thank you Mel for this life-changing advice. Although it's not new it takes someone like yourself to make the message loud and clear for others to follow.
@Nightbird.
@Nightbird. 7 жыл бұрын
And then there's the Eastern philosophy that you are where you're supposed to be. That instead of putting yourself down for not achieving what you wanted..you should be happy to be where you are at because nothing is guaranteed in life..and maybe those things you wanted so badly were actually not good for you..and something deep inside you stopped you for a reason. The guy who always wanted to be millionaire and finally makes it happen..and then ends up dying from crashing his new Ferrari. Or the beautiful woman who finally moves to LA to pursue acting..only to find herself only getting small parts which never pay the bills..and she ends up doing porn just to survive..which then kills her legitimate acting career and ruins her life. And so on..and so on. So the moral of this is instead of looking at your life as a series of failures because of what you haven't accomplished..look at it as a series of accomplishments and that you are doing well even if your not meeting all the goals you have always wanted. And that maybe..the reason you haven't met the goals isn't because of fear..but because deep inside you know they are not good for you. Or..just be happy where you are at in life..and look for the positive in it..instead of feeling you are missing out on a greater purpose.

That's key, cutting through the BS. You just got past the hardest part. That 'one break' that may help if we don't over think holes in it first. You gave yourself that break, you skipped over it. You acted on what you knew was best for you. Run like hell with it for all it's got. It gets better and better everyday, with any effort. New directions and new things to learn, better tools to build with. I'm glad for you. Oh, just a suggestion; The pain from all the bullshit and bad shit fades some with time but the wounds won't heal until you treat them. They're there and hold you back even you ignore them. jus sayin. Faster Tapping is great, simplified and not dragged out or just about selling books. Peace&Grace

+Armand Grimaud - And then there are all the people who don't overthink things and end up dead. And for whom overthinking would have helped..not hurt them. Personally..I find there is no such thing as "overthinking" something. But I do find plenty of examples of people just following their impulses and ending up in very bad positions or just plain dead. Some of the greatest inventors of our time..Tesla and Edison..were famous for overthinking even the simplest things. And just look at what they created. Remember my friend: The woman in this video is just one of a long line of people selling an idea..a product..and merchandise. They are not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts..or out of some altruistic reason. If they were..the information would be free..as the information that comes from the Dalai Lama for example..and the books the Dalai Lama sells are just compiled info from his free speeches..and all profits go to charity. Every year a new person comes out with "important and life changing information"..and this woman is just one of them. But the real info to change your life is free..and is available in most libraries..both physical and online..and in the words of our elders, grandparents, and the world around us..if we would only open our hearts as well as our ears.

I actually started doing this way before I heard of this. But I'm usually counting to 3. Whenever I'm afraid of doing something I try to force myself by counting to 3 and doing it. For example I was always afraid of speaking infront of a big group of people, or asking questions during class and I thought myself to overcome those fears by forcing myself to do those things. It also helped me with my singing and preforming infront of crowds and when talking to boys etc etc. Very good life trick. Whenever you have a good idea act upon it, don't let fear stop you.

I came across this video at the right moment, I was really overwhelmed emotionally over financial situation today... and over the last couple of years together with other life things that are frustrating. And all I wanted to do is just stay in bed and do nothing and talk to no one, even though I would literally push myself to do something I felt like I was dragging and not much was changing, except more self criticism. I know all the right ways to do things in life, but I cannot bring myself to do it in the right way, due to everything mentioned here. Also, mostly because a few years ago, someone imprinted the self doubt in my brain. From then on it just kept going down with more fears created by me, which led me to a really miserable place. I think this should help change that. Thank you!

Thinking for more than 5 seconds has kept me alive..while many around me ended up dead. It has taught me to not jump to conclusions..because it is easy to misjudge when doing it quickly. It has taught me in a world full of negative, judgemental and harmful people to be careful..assess your surroundings and those around you..and always have an escape plan in life..no matter the situation..which of course requires thinking for more than 5 seconds. I appreciate your message here..but it doesn't resound with me..and isn't for everyone.

Whether you have a habit of flying off the cuff and shooting off your mouth or being paralyzed by worry, Recognize the habits/patterns. One knows what one should do instead. When the trigger appears 5 4 3 2 1 to take the desired action. That might be think first or get off your ass.

Tim Moody Don't give up Tim. I dig it, the initial apprehension. I'll say this: 1) The truth is you won't change your brain and life in practicing this 5-second ritual ONE Time. You WIN THE GAME when you do what others call Habit Stacking. The 5-second rule helps you take back control in that moment. The repeated actions change your life. 2) As Levarr Burton also said at the end of Reading Rainbow (paraphrasingly), "You Don't Have to Take Her Word For It"! Test it like a scientist or skeptic. Prove that apprehension wrong. Or... If it doesn't work, tell everybody all the variables that made it fail. Wishing you all the best. (Side Note: I do not work for Mel. Never heard her speak before this video. Was skeptical of the "title" alone when Lewis Howes had her on his podcast recently. This video cleared up my initial thoughts.)
@MNkno

Tim, I share your apprehension. Today's the anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake, and feeling that you're in control of EVERYTHING in your life is sheer foolishness in the face of events like that one. What is needed is the impulse to look at any situation with an eye to identifying what you CAN control, and working on that. The idea that you have to stop thinking and act immediately also seems overstated: it seems to favor unplanned impulsive acts. Setting limits on thinking before taking action seems to be more sensible than banning any thought before acting on impulse...

apply it to what 'is known' by you already, ie: something you have been procrastinating on before, not on any and every thought or idea that pops into your wee head. Discernment is what Mel forgets to mention into the video

Ruth MacClure She explains very well, but her explanation could be even shorter and still get the point across. Is the point of the video to talk vaguely about the 5 second rule for thirteen minutes? All she has to do is give one or two examples of how the 5 second rule works. When you wake up in the morning with the alarm clock, get up within five seconds or you will be lazy. 5,4,3,2,1... If you want better grades. Study. 5,4,3,2,1... it’s basically telling yourself to choose the action you know is good for you.

Mel First of all, I just want to say thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with the world. I first heard of you recently on Impact Theory and I really gravitated towards your message. What really stood out for me was when you spoke about how you start off your day. That's something I had been really struggling with, I've been using your technique for the last week and it's really lifted my mood throughout the day. I was always writing to do lists and putting all this unnecessary pressure on myself to get these things done. Once I focused on 1 or 2 things a day I found myself doing a lot more than I thought. Keep putting out this content! It's great stuff and a good way to give us a sneak peak of what's in your book. I can't wait to purchase it! :)

The five second rule's locus of control philosophy is westernised and reductionist. Having an internal locus of control doesn't truly make you happy, but it may add more stress onto it, by trying to control things out of your own realm. Sometimes being in harmony with life circumstance (not matter how good or bad) depends on how you perceive it, affecting hapiness and fulfilment. Having a non-judgemental attitude is probably important in this. It's all down to perspective. One size doesn't fit all. Life is complex like that.

👏🏽 Thank you for saying this. Many things are relative. I have a friend who drives herself crazy thinking she could have done something to cause people's reactions or non-reactions. Instead of considering other factors at play she blames herself. Her internal locus of control is at max and I wouldn't consider her happy at all.

Uh no… you are being reductionist if you think the rule is for changing things outside your locus of control. It’s for changing only what we do control - our behavior. Just like the eastern philosophy you’re alluding to places emphasis on changing what we do control mentally i.e. perception . This is the behavioral version.

"The time has come for each and everyone of you to decide whether you are going to be the problem or whether you are going to be the solution. You must choose brothers you must choose. It takes 5 seconds, 5 seconds of decision, 5 seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet, it takes 5 seconds to realize that its time to move, it's time to get down with it...."

Enough, enough is enough from this moment on I will deplete and defeat all that has punished me the most of my life. Fear, panic, anxiety. I said, NO MORE I LIVE IN THIS CAGE. I REFUSE TO CONTINUE LIVING Miserably LIKE THIS. I'm going to face and crash head on against my fear, panic, and anxiety. I'm not a cower any longer. This is a little bit of a double edged sword. I think it's healthy to have both confidence and faith in yourself but you also can't walk blindly into oncoming traffic. Living completely without fear of uncertainty is usually accompanied by extreme narcissism and why children today don't know how to fail and struggle without spiraling into extreme depression or needing to be rescued by their parents every month when their rent is due. That's all.
@alexk48
@alexk48 2 жыл бұрын
This is not advising to walk blindly into anything. Our habit of procrastinating and finding something more pleasurable to do is walking blindly and giving in to an impulse. It's also a way of developing very poor habits. This is about starting what you NEED to do instead of engaging in bad unproductive habits. Children who are taught the difference between want and need don't call home for rent. Eventually they want to do what they need to do and get a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment from doing so.

Observe how Mel speaks in statements. When her intonation indicates that she is asking a question - it is because she is actually asking a question. Many people would do well to study her affect and mimic it. Nothing tells the world how unsure you are of yourself than continually inflecting your sentences as if posing a question. When people speak to me with the semi-permanent question inflection, I find myself not very interested in listening; The speaker clearly does not believe what they are saying..

It is still a part of my life for other intentions and combating defeating patterns. This helps those I guide realize the power of choice of where we put our thoughts. TIP: 1. MAKE IT MANDATORY, to immediatley banish negative self talk with an affirmation you deserve happi ess. 2. TAKE ACTION, a small step, do a push up, breath deeply, call a friend, do one thing that is self serving! BEST PRACTICES and WISHES for us ALL!
