Finally, I was told an old lady had knitted some and they were in the hairdressers. Not only did the Council neglect the monument and grounds, but waited till the very last minute to get someone in to fix it up! Thanks to these two wonderful men who did such a fantastic job, as usual.

WOW - I am shocked that a War Memorial would be let go like this. Council should be ashamed. I’m from Australia and our local Council is meticulous about looking after our War Memorials. They are always beautifully maintained, as they should be. We should never forget the sacrifices that were made by the fallen. They should be honoured and remembered forever. Thanks for your hard work in restoring this Memorial.

I'm from the States. As a child, we, guides, cleaned the memorials. In Germany, where I live, they have a special fund that looks after the huge memorials. The guides along with other youth organizations help as well.

I always wondered if it really meant/said, thou shalt not murder rather then kill, i.e. protection of loved one/bodily harm is being done to someone etc. your thoughts?

It would have been strange indeed if God had intended it to apply to killing in war and then turned right around and commanded the Israelites to launch so many military campaigns against the nation's enemies. The Commandment refers to premeditated killing.

It's a common tactic used by local councils. They'll lock the place away from the general public then neglect it and finally sell it off for a peppercorn price to one of their buddies. You can bet they already know who they're going to sell it to.

As a US Veteran, I thank you for doing such a nice job cleaning this memorial up. It always bothers me how shallow people are with respect to appreciation of veterans and their sacrifices we all made for everyone around the globe. We don't want much, just please respect our service; and when you do decide to pay homage, please consider the long term care of those memorials. Nothing serves as a more thankless slap in the face than letting weeds, trash, and muck neglectfully accumulate on your fleeting signs of recognition. it depends on the actual War Memorial as the custodian could be one of several organisations or a individual. The council even if not the custodian have a duty to ensure that it is maintained at least yearly

Clearly the local council and Royal British Legion don't give a damn about the site of the memorial throughout the year to let it get into that terrible state until there's going to be cameras around to get pictures taken laying a wreath on Rememberance weekend. Former US Department of Veterans Affairs employee working in evidence collection and review for disability compensation. For a veteran claiming Traumatic Brain Injury I wrote a note that support for TBI could be found on one page of his service record. The person who would be requesting the TBI exam asked me what I was looking at. I told him the vet was a sapper in Iraq. He didn’t know what a sapper was so I explained it to him. The vet was likely injured by one of his own explosions, for which he received the commendation in his service record.

I know all councils are struggling with funding, spiralling costs and bureaucracy form filling, but I have to say that’s a disgrace. I’m a little surprised local community groups wouldn’t have been involved though. I’m a council worker and we take great pride in our cenotaph and it’s kept very well with the help of good staff and community involvement. Such a great job you done there, hopefully now it’s finished it’s not forgotten about for another year and a panic job. Thank you for taking the time to do it 👍

Great work indeed. However, I wouldn't be too quick to blame the local authority. Their funding and finances are squeezed hard these days. Many struggle to deliver even essential services and have to cut out everything else. Whilst a war memorial is important emotionally, nobody will go without food or a roof over their head if it is neglected. The choice is that stark for many councils.

As a veteran of the US Navy, I feel these memorials should always be kept up. If not by government departments, then other veterans and lovely people such as you and your dad. I also must tell you, I have PTSD and watching your videos is one of the most calming, peaceful things I do for myself. I'm not sure if it is the calm organization you bring out of chaos or your lovely generosity and your dad's cheeky smile...but it helps tremendously. Thank you for what you do and share with us...

David Vs Goliath, Samson and Delilah, The Crusades (both for the holy land and northern), Rhineland Massacres, The Spanish Inquisition, The Conquistadors, Salem Witch Trials, 30 Years War, 100 Years War etc. Yes a zealously adhered to commandment. I pick up litter wherever I go. I dont expect councils/government to do everything for us.

A bit hard when, as an indictment on modern society, they are behind security fencing and locked gates. Councils also don't like their failings being shown up, and come up with excuses to stop people doing so; health and safety is a favourite. It's not beyond them to even prosecute someone who does.

You and your fathers efforts are beyond words. Efforts to transform that area into a sacred place for Remembrance Day were beyond expectations when my wife and i saw the start of the video. You must feel so proud as we do of your efforts. Let us hope the local authority and local people get their act together to maintain the hard work and also upkeep this precious memorial . My father was a POW and saw many of his colleges die in the battle field. Bless you both and that authority should be named and shamed.

Been a ex reservist and a member of the RBL it saddens me greatly to see how this as been left unattended. Are there memories also to be forgotten. Not when we have 2 fantastic NATIONAL hero's willing to do the council's work for them. My sadness was restored watching this episode. Thank you guy's from all who served, we salute you.

It may not be a council property and theoretically if it is it looks like the sites been empty for at least a few years there was british legion flags so more than likely they lease or leased the property which puts the responsibility for maintenance on them not the council until the lease is finished. Should it have gotten to that stage probably not but is it the councils doing also probably not

@@Callaghan552 I mean, when you pay taxes, you generally expect the people in charge of those taxes to do their job and use the taxes to maintain the communal areas, now of course if this was some sort of private arrangement and the council had no say in the matter of upkeep then it's not their fault, although the council probably should have brought it up to whoever WAS in charge of it.

@@TheHeroBeats You do and they ought to, however I think that people ought to be practical and although they SHOULD be doing it, when they're obviously not and probably won't then it's time to step up as a community and do it yourselves, take pride in your area. Where I live somebody had smashed a bottle and although so many people complained about the glass on the floor, nobody would sweep it up or even loan me a stiff bristle brush that they owned so I could do it because "that's the council's job they should do it". Well I value not walking on glass more than I value being able to fruitlessly complain about the council

I don't think whatever random town this was particularly cares all that much. It looks like they placed it in the bin/recycling area at the back of some sad and depressing looking old peoples home, surrounded by what looks like a council estate so depressing it makes me want to cry.

What a fabulous tribute to those that offered and selflessly gave of themselves to protect the freedoms that we enjoy today. Are there no scouting units in that area that would adopt that memorial park and volunteer to make it their mission to preserve and protect the memories of those that made the ultimate sacrifice? Lord Baden Powell, founder of the boy scouting program there in the UK and also here in the US, made it our mission to do a good turn daily and that includes remembering our brave fallen hero’s. The scouting unit that I’m affiliated with requires our scouts to give back and help others. I’m hoping that maybe a unit in this area of the UK is able to help maintain this memorial to our fallen hero’s and involve others within the community to maintain this memorial. Thank you both for your labor of love!! ❤
