In this clip from a recent Direct interview, Nicholas Eberstadt unpacks the statistics behind and lifestyles that feed the no-work phenomenon. 6 million Americans are NEET - not in education, employment or training - and spend an enormous amount of time on screens
For every prime age man who is unemployed, there are over 4 men who are neither working nor looking for work. These men fall right through the cracks of American employment statistics.

Nicholas holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he researches and writes extensively on demographics and economic development generally, and more specifically on international security in the Korean peninsula and Asia. Domestically, he focuses on poverty and social well-being. He is the author of numerous books, notable among them 'Poverty in China', 'The Tyranny of Numbers', 'Russia's Peacetime Demographic Crisis', and his latest, 'Men Without Work: America's Invisible Crisis'.
Nicholas has offered invited testimony before Congress on numerous occasions and has served as consultant or adviser for a variety of units within the US government. He has a PhD in political economy and government, an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government, and an AB from Harvard University. In addition, he holds a master of science from the London School of Economics.

When you are demonized in the workforce, then told you are not doing enough then taxed to a point of no return then mandated and told you are useless to society and finally chewed up and spat out at the end of it, can you really blame anyone for doing the minimum required to survive and using what time they have left to enjoy their life how they want to ? There is a difference to 'fleeing' and actively working smarter rather than harder.

I am also a man in this category. I've been a tech for 2.5 decades. Recent mandates and other 'requirements' pushed me out of work. I do not feel inspired to return despite having little income. Retraining is a constant expectation. The workforce is highly polarising and employers dig into your personal life to ensure you line up with 'their values'. You trip up on red tape as you walk in the door and calling/texting your mobile outside hours is the norm. Further, dreams of home ownership have left long ago due to years of treading water with living costs on an average wage with 3 kids. Yes - these men are in despair and medicate themselves with screens and pain relief to drown out the noise.

Well voiced. It's not hard to see the writing on the wall here. We are in trouble in times ahead. These men will not be taking up arms or going to war, if that need ever arises again. They are completely demoralized. They'll coldly look at all the vocal loudmouths in society and tell them to get on the front lines. We've allowed decadence to make us grossly insensitive and asinine in the way we deal with problems today. So instead the tactic is to berate and disparage those who feel downtrodden, rather than lift them up. I dare say, we deserve what we get. The time to realize this is now, while we still can and before it's too late. Hope you find better times ahead and stay grounded in what gives you hope. All the best.

I give 40 hours a week, society gives me a house, a family, and a future. It is the "unspoken rule". Society gives me none of those things for working 40 hours a week. So why should I work? There is no reason why I should work. There is no reason for me to pay taxes to support a society that hates me. In fact, by more and more men not working, maybe this whole thing will collapse and then maybe things will get much worse, but there is a slight chance things will get better after. It’s not going to get better for a long time… I was asked at work several years ago (5-6) about gender equality in the workplace and I mentioned that whilst men working in my field often had young families and they supported them, often up to 3 dependents, with their wage. This was not true for the opposite gender, in many cases (not all) women would be single or without dependents. Thus for every man out of work due to progressive ideals they also placed children’s futures at risk. Even if the man was divorced etc then he still was supplying up to 50% of his wage to his dependents. So my answer was that whilst in concept workplace 50/50 targets are nice to have the unfortunate issues are increase poverty and targeted wealth redistribution to single people without children.

I dropped out of the workforce in 2017. I used to work 3 jobs and juggle college in my 20s and when I hit 30 I realized I had nothing to show for it. So I decided to take a break for a year and just enjoy life. I downscaled my job scope when looking for my next position in 2018 and started taking call centre work. The great thing about not working is that you have no bills. Sold my car and that was enough to tide me over for 2 years because the only expense I had was food and insurance. Just needed an Uber to take me to the grocery store once a month. In 2019 I decided to take a semi-permanent position working for one of my family business and that got me through the pandemic where I was able to save 80% of my paycheck and put 15k into investments. I have enough to cover my bills, and I dont foresee myself going back into full time employment ever again. I will only work when I need to work. I can make enough in 1 year to financially support myself for 6 years. Being a single adult male is cheap. I don't want for anything. Can't say that if I'm constantly paying for my car, or buying makeup like women do, or have to pay for dates like those guys chasing skirts, or pay for kids like fathers do. I get to relax, take my time, play videogames, enjoy walks around the neighborhood, be part of nature... It's an amazing life when you learn men dont need much to be happy.

Enron came along and caused my utility to cut 2000 jobs including mine. I just had enough time in to qualify for a buy out package. I took it and no one wanted to hire me at my previous salary. I learned how to get by on less money. No reason to work for a smaller salary then I could get for not working at all. I downsized my house and moved away to cheaper surroundings.

Hahaha love it! Every guy slowly morphing into Lester Burnham from American Beauty. And all the shaming tactics in the world ain't gonna work either. This is going to get a whole lot juicier, especially when the sparky's & plumbers pack it in.

I recently quit my job of 23 years. 48 not doing drugs. See that I am going nowhere and am just bad and useless. Waiting to die. Maybe there will be value in something on the other side. I am only bad and worthless here. Maybe I should try. I have never done drugs and alcohol. The church at one time said alcohol was a gift from God. I think I may understand why.

I am 54 and have been in sales for the past twenty eight years. Two years ago I lost a $100k per year job. It has been difficult to replace. I basically took a 40% paycut. When you hit 50, the work force or job market looks alot different. I am now working but not earning what I should. But I go to work daily. Now I have my sites set on my social security and will take it at age 62. That is what I have to look forward to.

They don’t let teen boys work! When I was a teen I could work a job after school. Now the state legislation says you can work something like 3 hours a week! The system is grooming for laziness! My son is 14 and wants to make his own money. But the opportunities are mostly under the table.

Financial Independence Retire Early is not about retiring filthy rich, it’s about locking in a high quality life on a shoestring budget, (compared to well heeled looking ind3ntured $ervant$) 20 x your yearly outgo and your working at things you actually enjoy, care about

The other benefit is you can take on more work if you want, but entirely on your own terms. Say if you wanted to save up for a new car or a vacation, you could do that on a part time job. But if the workplace turned out to be too toxic, you could just quit with no regrets, as the basic "costs of living" are already covered.

Why marry? If a woman wants to be with you, she'll be with you whether you marry her or not. If a woman doesn't want to be with you, she'll divorce you if she is married to you. These days financial success is difficult. If I was a young man, I'd probably not go to college or major in some joke major and focus on appealing to women. Hit the gym and bars, not the books and job. I can't blame men for not going after something with low returns. As for me, i have a masters and a house. It's worked out OK for me. If I married I'd wind up losing my home and poor after alimony/child support etc. I'm not really interested in being beta bux.

The era of indifference concerning the struggles of Boys and Men, Girls and Women this situation needs to be addressed truthfully now. Otherwise this situation will get worse. The unemployment rates does not tell the whole story. Sixty years ago times were different.

Distressing? Why is it distressing? Our work a holic ancestors did too much. That’s what-my family was in 4 wars, lost businesses, worked till we got cancer, poisoned, threatened… then we believe in school and the kids are hooked on drugs. Then you have a problem with a man whose ancestors have been here for all those generations living in a house built in 1800s ?

'No Surrender' by Hiroo Onoda (WW2 Japanese soldier 30 year jungle hold out). No surrender, No Collaboration with the enemy. Gents, don't get angry, get even like the Poles in the communist era and Onoda. Minimal Collaboration with the enemy, no weekend Dad, No community involvement or volunteering, No nationalism, No inheritances, work slow, play dumb, make lots of work sabotages, sorry mistakes, be argumentative, live alone. The Poles who adopted such an uncollaborative approach, and WW2 Allied POWs, were the ones who lasted the distance. The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws - Tacitus

Imagine men realizing they don’t have to work as hard for women who will leave them anyway. We’ll actually get to keep all of the fruits of the labor we bother to do rather than the half that’s left after the divorce.
