Nor does fashion have anything to do with being sterile , alot of people like you forget thst fashion is about being stylish. It's not fashion because you say it is 😂😂. I don't get it , i dont know when it started so it's wrong , not fashionable and isn't meant for me. You can be fashionable and not trendy without sounding out of touch and looking anonymous.

Forgive me for jumping in but.... I had a very knowledgeable and experienced friend in the fashion industry offer this very useful and everlasting advice.... " Fashion will come and go but style is always dominant and unchanging. Simplicity and quality will always look and age better than the latest trend. With fashion you focus on the clothes - with style you focus on the person." I never forgot this and try my best to apply it to my wardrobe. You seem to understand this and that's why I pay attention to your advice. Great post and great content - thank you!

I wear crap at home to spend "leisure time," except I call it watching TV, having lunch, washing dishes and the dog, reading my book, looking up a word definition on my tablet. Sometimes it's cold, flannel shirts, and sometimes it's mild, tee shirts. If I need to run out to the grocery, I change into something suitable for grocery shopping in public. That is hardly a fashion statement. It's crap at home alone where no one sees me. At the store, I dress better than crap because, you guessed it, people will see me, and I wish to see them not wearing crap. Young people without a goal will never grasp that concept.

Mills and Zooms hate Booms. Why would they want to follow in our sweat pants ? Hippies didn't dress like older people. THAT was the point. No one is going to change a movement. Try telling magg nutts to dress up. Try telling Zooms to get a job and save up for that down payment on a house they want so bad but not bad enough to work for. They aren't going to take fashion advise from old people. In their world, what's the point in dressing up or dressing down? It doesn't matter. My advice to them: always match your leathers.

I like slightly oversized clothing because I personally find it much more comfortable, especially in the Florida heat. Pants that are a little on the looser side, but nowhere near as extreme as what you showed. Prefer more of a regular/standard fit vs a slim fit. My style is more slightly edgy than preppy, however I agree with those trends, especially the chunky shoes. I have an expensive mesh knit polo which sits somewhere between a nice knit, and the crotchet style. It's just too see thru, if I was 21 and ripped then maybe !

I agree about avoiding these trends. I have been intrigued with the 'old money aesthetic' and have been slowly trying to incorporate it into my wardrobe. It does remind me of the 'preppy' look back in the 80's. I'm just trying to figure out a way to drop any pretentiousness and make it more spontaneous...like a 'sprezzatura-old money aesthetic'.
@40OverFashion11 ай бұрын
Great point!
@JackMason-oq8lf11 ай бұрын
Unless you actually have Old Money and graduated with a preparatory certificate, dressing preppy is bound to be pretentious. The social climbers called it dressing UP, as in UPper Class. The rich will always know you are a poseur. Even if you make lots of money, you'll still only be nouveau riche. Some joke, better nouveau than no riche at all. They're not in the same league, the Big League, The only one that matters. Next time, pick better grandparents, experience quiet luxury in person.
@oltedders11 ай бұрын
Totally on board with the preppy geezer look. It's a look that can't be faked. I remember years ago hearing someone say, "The only thing better than being young and in love is being old and rich." Over the top doesn't need to be out loud.

I agree for the most part. I do think a more robust shoe might be a good choice for heavier built men. I knew a guy that was 6’ about 280 (not very muscular) who wore immaculately tailored suits, but always wore dainty Gucci horse bit loafers, the proportions were just way off.

Yes, I am free to agree with you. Spot on. Keep it up. From a 64 yo cowboy mentality guy. Best practice is a sport coat and slacks, with or without the tie. A fashion queen female once told me a guy that looks sharp in a timeless cut (not fad) suit, or sport coat and slacks, and he gets second looks from the the ladies. I have never taken a poll if that is true. Have you? What is your opinion on hats? Worn outside, never inside, or at least by men with manners.

There are 60+yr old men in Japan that throw out the idea of “dressing your age” and they’re totally slaying it! I understand if you’re inexperienced in being fashion-conscious and need guidance. And it’s not about following trends. But at some point, you can get passed “dressing to impress” and rather dress to EXPRESS. Or, you can stick to that “uniform” of a 40yr old. Ultimately, wear what makes you feel good!

Interesting video, I am a 54 year old Gen Xer and I live in Florida. I work 4 days a week from home and 1 day a week in the office. Since I am in Florida no need for jackets, sweaters, etc. but I have some for when I travel. At home it is typically a nice pair of shorts and a polo (for days with Zoom call meetings) or a nice plain organic solid color tshirt (if no Zoom calls). At the office depending on time of year it is either a nice pair of jeans or khakis and a polo or long sleeve button up cotton shirt sort of like what you are wearing in video. Unless you are young and really into fashion I say don’t overthink it too much. I say buy good quality clothes on sale if possible not trendy or luxury. I have found you want to avoid cheap clothes and overpriced clothes too.

Likewise, I may wear ath-leisure a bit more, for example a fairly dlim fitting Tommy Hilfiger pants/hoodie with Air Force Ones or Air Jordan's but again, I'm maybe atypical as a lean athletic cyclust build so perhaps it's more in-keeping with my lifestyle. As for footwear, I thankfully have never blown money on trends that make no sense like overly chunky shoes. Living in Florida and mostly working from home i rarely have the need for dress shoes but have some for those once in awhile times when they are required. I typically wear sneakers as they are comfortable and functional. Currently my rotation of sneakers include Nike, Saucony, and All Birds. On a casual weather permitting i may just wear a pair of Reef sandals. Same thing with shoes that I apply with clothes, good quality and fit but don’t overpay. My Nike’s were heavily discounted on sale, and my other sneakers were even cheaper.

Extreme baggy pants, crop tops, and crochet sweaters are a hard pass. The chunky loafers aren't terrible as long as the soles aren't too elevated, but a moderate lugged sole loafer, brogue, or oxford provides great stability and goes great with casual or formal wear.
