Mercedes-Benz EQC - Obsolete after just 4 years?

We first tested the EQC from Mercedes-Benz when it was new just four years ago. And four years is probably only half way through that model's gestation period, so you would think it was still fairly modern and fresh. But as we keep saying, the EV world moves fast, and competition amongst the premium players is fierce. So does the car still stand comparison with much newer rivals? We revisit the car to put it through the updated and more thorough AutoEV road test to find out.

You can now pick up a 2020 (70 plate) AMG Line spec with less than 40k miles for £26k in the UK. That's a huge amount of car for the money, and seriously tempting as a replacement for my diesel GLC.

Have had our EQC for 2,5 years now and driven 70000 km. Very nice car with great comfort. So what if is isn't made for Nuerburghring. In this country we are allowed to drive max 120 and on backroads normally 80 or 90 km/h. It has some great features that for instance Tesla still lacks. Specifically adaptive headlights, which in a country with lots of wildlife can be a lifesaver. To compare it with e-tron or I-pace, which I did when ordering the EQC 3 years ago, one sgould mention a price difference of 25 % with similar efficiency. I perceive the WLTP of 410 km as less and less of a problem each month as the charging infrastructure improves rapidly now. My next car will most likely not be the EQE SUV since the price is just too much and competition has tightened. I consider the EQC well worth the money in heinsight.

Fully agree! That is my problem with most reviews. I am looking now for a car, and I would like reviews to talk about the things that most of use care on daily bases. I have never had an EV, but as an example, I find ridiculous that people worries that much about range, when the they will probably use the full range at most once per year, in a holidays trip (which for sure you can do a 1hs stop somewhere).

@@SM-ol4ln I don't have any figures on degradation but degradation isn't something that I can say is bothering me after 82000 km today. I almost never charge it to 100 % and do roughly 75% of the charging at home (11kW). If I should say something negative about EQC it will be that I find it a bit akward to step in to. Thank you for your review. EQC owner here, actually on my second EQC. And I live in Norway, as you know, Norway is probably the most mature EV market in the world with over 90 % of new consumer cars being EV's. So, in customer satisfaction reports the Mercedes EQC is at the top of the list, and has been there for several years. So, Mercedes has done something right with this car for sure. Some comments, I have 21" tires on mine, and they are very quiet. I believe that the tires that were on the vehicle you tested were not ideal of the car. In all noise level tests I've seen, the EQC comes out as the most silent of all EV's. Secondly, comfort, how well you feel behind the wheel. I tried every competitor to the EQC before deciding, both times, and none of the competitors gives me that sense of comfort, although the iPace was a close second. Thirdly, when I drive I keep my eyes on the road. The EQC has the most used functions on physical buttons on the main console, which allows me to find the right button without having to look. I know that sounds a bit old fashioned, but it has to do with road safety, and is also why I chose a model with HUD. So, despite all the new competition, the EQC still stands out in the crowd to me. I know there will be a new EQC next year, fully built on the same EV platform as the rest of them, hopefully that one will be as good as this one.

Good review, couple comments - second hand ones dropped nicely in price and come with high specs. Full spec from 42k£ - maybe not in UK. HUD is particularly important with brighter interiors, the front screen has a reflection problem. Pretty sure my phone wirelessly charges in the hole at the front. 80kWh is usable capacity, total is around 85. Android is probably a good idea long term, and cannot be added later if the hardware isnt installed! The back seats have a separate climate control with the higher climate spec. Optionally also rear seat heating btw. Acceleration neck snapping way sufficient in my opinion. Finally, with my 19' I got way better consumption than what I read before buying, almost managed 400km (motorway).

So we just got one of the last of these as they are all pre-registered and discontinued in 2023. Nominally second owner but literally 45 miles on the clock, bought for £42,500. OK so its 'old' technology compared to the latest in a fast moving market but the finish is awesome for the price which is around one-third off the old list. Range isnt great but thats a compromise we can live with as we dont plan on many longer journeys - we looked at both a Volvo and Skoda and the MB is just a nicer place to sit for what was pretty much the same money for a 6 month old model with around 5k miles of either of those. We traded in an ML350 which was costing us around £250pcm in diesel and this cabin is just as nice and of course the infotainment has moved on from the old Comand. Wont be for everyone, certainly if you want cutting edge range but its a bargain for the money. We are on a 3 year pcp at which point we will go for newer tech.

Great review! How does the EQC compare to the lexus RZ?
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 9 ай бұрын
So, first of all, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. And what a great question, one which I have pondered quite a bit myself. If I had to choose between the two, what would I do? Thankfully, I was able to do big journeys in both cars, and both have their merits and demerits. I love the way the Lexus looks. Far more interesting than the Mercedes in my book, and also the interior is a great place to spend time in, especially the Takumi specification which is full of interesting materials with a build quality that I think overshadows the EQC. But then we get to the laborious and over-sensitive safety systems on the Lexus which grate on me. In terms of comfort, both cars are very evenly matched, the Lexus is a little bit more refined on the ride, but not by much. My biggest issue with the Lexus however is that range and poor efficiency. You just can't escape it, and if you are someone like me who does do regular long journeys, that has to be a massive drawback. The EQC is better, but by no means the best there is. Which is how I will answer your question. For me, neither car would be a consideration for my money at this space in the market. For range and efficiency, it is hard to ignore the Genesis GV70 Electrified, and for a blend of drivability and ease of use, the BMW iX3 is (believe it or not) better than both. But for me, the Jaguar I-Pace is still the one I would buy, just for the blend of looks, handling, performance and still being able to offer a good range. Only its slightly slower charing speeds let it down, but I would tolerate that to own a car that had all the other talents. Of course, that may change when we finally get our hands on a Polestar 3!

smooth lines , handsome mid family suv , weak link the range and the new 2024 mental insurance costs . Fair second hand purchase price on 2020Iish models but risk factor is no more original manuf warranty left unless bought from a decent retailer and would be lucky to get 6mths to a year . (Upside) Think there might be a 5-year warranty left on a 20/21 battery system if you purchase one with full mb certified service history. If you do a london leeds journey or further once a week or a bournemouth to suffolk coast run better look for a car with better battery range.

Great review. I do believe MB is really lagging behind other manufacturers, even the Europeans. They make very few bespoke EV's like the EQE and EQS, and they are very , very expensive for what you get. I once got a quote for an EQE Premium Plus - when I heard the price, I told the sales person I could get a Taycan for that money - walked away and bought an Ioniq 6. When it comes to only 3 trim levels and lack of customization ability it is just UK problem (probably due to BREXIT). If you buy this car in EU you can really customize it much much better.

The range is 260miles with no climate control on. Climate control zaps about 25% of your range. Fine in the summer - a bit cock in the winter. That being said - I adore mine. Absolute beast of a car. It's like a spaceship.

@@MultiBadger32 had mine for a few weeks now and I get between 2.2 and 2.8 so yeah, 2.5mpkwh is a good guess which predicts range of roughly 200 miles from the 80kwh battery.

I always chuckle when I see people driving the once expensive euro imports that purchased them used because "This car was $80,000 brand new just 7 years ago and they got it for less than 10 grand!!!" I'm thinking, just wait till something needs repaired or replaced because it will, and you are handed a $3,000 bill to replace the starter.

There's a lesson here for reviewers who do the hard sell on these ridiculously expensive cars when they first come out. People listen & spend their hard earned cash on these cars, urged on by reviewers. Getting only four years from an obscenely expensive car before it becomes outdated is a joke. Reviewers who spruiked this car should offer a profuse apology - and not do it again.

We put chapters in so you can choose the parts you want to (or don't want to) listen to. I do agree with you about styling being about taste, but it is also to point out areas that we like/don't like, comment on heritage, or why it looks the way it does. But like I said, by all means skip to the bits you want to know about. Thank you for watching and taking the time to give some feedback though.

I pace is a nice car it has nearly everything compared to eqc. I think maybe the main thing people don't like about it is it is a bit on the lower side for an SUV. As you know and probably follow the bandwagon, everyone is on an suv craze.
