I had the blocking plate blow out causing a complete loss of boost. Its not a fun feeling when you starve the engine of air because your turbo is not spooling up. Just keep plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve. Use the block off plate between the EGR and intake manifold. This was on an OM602

I think some kits come with a plug that has a "freeze plug" like design that is pressed in... id seem to think using a pressin plug with a plate over it would be best 🤔

Seems like one could cut the flange off the end of the original corrugated EGR pipe and then weld a plate onto it. Then the original clamp could be used to hold this home made blocking plate against the exhaust manifold port.

Would it not be better to leave the EGR in place? Put the disc (looks like a welsh plug) under the pipe and re-clamp?

I installed a BB in the egr valve vacuum hose. The egr valve will never open as long as the BB is in the control line. :-)

The Permatex Ultra Copper Gasket Maker is basically a silicon paste, absolutely not suitable to that job, placed on the metallic cap. It cannot hold and therefore cannot seal under high pressure and high temperature it breaks, it crumbles. Probably a better solution is to use the Würth exhaust manifold and muffler sealing paste, or the equivalent LIQUI MOLI.

what i am planning to do for my kits is have a metal gasket and have the round cap have like a lip to go over the pipe like how the original style pipe that is removed. this way it wont bend and have leaks. i will try and work on this asap

Better off keeping the pipe connected but still using the blanking plate as well. On visual inspection know-one would know......but it will stop the flow & that's what's important...... The kit is designed to keep the egr pipe on the engine.

Two people will be happy/none-the-wiser you plugged the flow but left the apparatus in it's place... ...A future buyer (not familiar with your methods). ...and in the off-chance the CA DMV changes it's mind, and requires a diesel to be inspected...you won't have to replace all the kit.

Did you ever come up with a better block off plate for the exhaust manifold? Also, I did mine a couple years ago and didn't know I was supposed to put gasket maker there. Guess I'll go back and do that, though I hate to risk moving it, since it seems to be happy how it is. I remember having a hard time getting it perfectly centered.

I would cut the flange on the original EGR pipe and install it over the blocking plate to squeeze the blocking plate a little more. It looks like that blocking plate is too thin for the clamp... What do you think Diesel Mercedes?

I got an ebay kit but for om606 and had same problem with that blanking plate. It leaked. I'm going to make my own and use copper because it is easy to shape.

David, on your '93 you have to convert the turbo to a pressure activated wastegate. It's not a simple procedure, and it may be difficult to find the right actuator now, but it is possibly the best thing you will ever do on your car! this is not a good idea because you will have now a big pumping looses in your engine and it will not be so economical any more. Ask engineers ! Why do you think they put egr valve on a diesel engines ?
