As a skater teen in the 90s listening to Metallica and Tool and NIN, I know I wouldn't have been mature enough to give Tori a chance. I would have been too insecure in my metal-ness to be caught listening to a woman performing solo with just a piano. As a prog-metal guy in my 40s, it makes me sad to know that there was this undeniably captivating badass, once in a lifetime artistic soul out there all this time and I let her slip by on the fringes of my awareness for so long.

Tori was my artistic awakening and she has been my favorite artist since 1996. I've learned and grown so much from her music, her interviews and her books. I've also been lucky to have interviewed her a couple of times. That advice "never meet your heroes" is entirely wrong when it comes to her. She is kind, gracious, insightful, patient and revealing-and always, always comes from a place of compassion, even when she is confrontational. I watch videos of people reacting to her music because it is moving to see people discover her unique voice for the first time. The variety of her music from song to song is wildly different and so some people really can't warm up to her or understand where she is coming from depending on the first few songs they hear, but the empathy and compassion and vulnerability you hear in this song is the heart of almost every one of her songs. She's so underappreciated and misunderstood.

I have watched you reaction again and now I am overwhelmed, too. Never thought I could make Andrei cry and Dominika speechless at the same time.;) But as you said, that is music for you. Tori has always had a special way of expressing herself while performing and it had quite a bit to do with the rape I mentioned in my comment. Her positioning has always been very provocative and when she goes to work at the piano and sometimes the organ on opposite sides at the same time I am left with my mouth open. She makes her beautiful lyrics and music soar high and takes you on a journey into your deepest self. When I listen to her I don't mind feeling vulnerable and emotional cause it makes me understand myself better.

Wow! I was hoping you'd like my request, but I am still stunned by your reaction. And I am so glad Tori managed to evoke the same kind of feelings that I have when watching her. Each and every time. If you want to delve into her music a bit deeper, you surely won't be disappointed. I would recommend "Me and a gun", quite heavy, granted, cause it is her way to cope with being the victim of a rape. Yes, that sounds scary, but if you are brave enough to watch the live performance from Montreux 1992 (where she is wearing a red top), I am certain you will understand why it is special.

Just one last comment. First of all Dominika saying that she "choked" on Tori's performance was such a beautiful way of expressing the impact that this artist also had and still has on me. As for the "sad" part Andrei mentioned, and that Tori seemed to be close to crying. I don't think it is really about that but more about describing her relationship to her father who was a reverend (pastor), a somewhat stern person and according to her "tenaciously pragmatic". He was angry when she got kicked out of the prestigious Peabody institute for being too much of a rebel (lucky for us, I guess). And then he took her to play some bars in Georgetown in order to "make the most of her talent". Meaning he might have been a bit harsh like parents are, but that you will find in every family. In the end it was a way for her to process the relationship with her father and her own development musically. And the way she painted the picture in the song is absolutely amazing and endearing.

Tori Amos - Precious Things (Live Session 1998), one of her more rock styled songs, and just as much of a vocal experience as this one.
@DavidMichaelCommer7 ай бұрын
She was born in Newton, North Carolina but she moved to a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. when she was five-so she grew up very politically conscious. That plays a significant role in her music, along with her minister father's Christian zealotry and her Cherokee maternal grandfather's spiritual worldviews. She has southern and indigenous roots and both are significant aspects of her music but she's also an activist. Her music is usually regarded as confessional poetry, which much of it is, but I also consider her a musical essayist.

I totally worship her. This was almost her first live performance EVER in 1992 before any record. I have seen her ‘live’ 12 times. Every album before 2000 is amazing. After that I think she was ‘lost’ to the record labels. Your pauses/silences are what makes you videos so fantastic. (great song…. But isn’t even in my top 20 favourites. One of reactor said this song is naïve. You can say it a little, but I never had such idea before this conclusion. As for me it looks like nostalgic memories from childhood. It is also probably my favorite song from her and I like that you see and hear emotions (she is good in showing emotions by breathing) + she is also very expressive. I really like this song. Ps. She is great with piano. I never was very deep into her music, but I liked some of her songs and like some and you can say she is artist for sure (+ great live). Ps2. This will be strange statement but she is expressive but it is strange but with piano she is gives some "sexy feeling" with piano. Can not name it but it looks like this when she "interact" with piano and feel the music. But it maybe only me (and I dont sexualise her just I had such feeling as she interact with piano)
@d.t.nelson88056 ай бұрын
This is one of those songs where I prefer the album version rather than live. The electronic sound of the keyboard is fine, but her playing on an actual piano gives the song a more fragile tone, and the added strength of strings on the album version provides a more emotional impact.
