Real origin....A freedom-fighter against children-slavery ! Claus - Niklaas - Nicollo Tedeschi, bishop in Palermo of counterpope Felix. Did free a lot of children-slaves. For an african , Bara, he had to proceed in court in Barcelona. In Catalan , Bara is Peter, the "Zwarte Piet'" of those who talk dutch, and start to understand why he came from Spain.... Seems that during the proces he was living in the castle of Montserrat, Torrent, near Valencia. Bara run away of his owner, a jew, so Niccolo did baptise him, a jew hadn't the right to own a christian slave. The owner went to court, in Barcelona. Bara did remain free , but Niccolo had to pay the manumission and Niccolo was jailed for debt. Bara went in service ( "engaged" for three years was tradition, but i didn't find that in this case, so I suppose ) , and Niccolo went free to Palermo, where he died soon after.(1445). Two years later, popehood united, and Nicolas V , who sanctified salvehunting became the new pope.... The story went underground, untill churches power went down with the french revolution. Sint Niklaas ( santa Claus of the Dutch ) came back, with his princeling Bara, with their horses, BUT on a steamer, and the princeling became a dusty dirty servant putting coal on the fire.... - colonial times. But in peoples tradition, it remained a princeling as companion of Sinterklaas. Meanwhile, church did put Niccolo Tedeschi together with Nicolas of Myre in still Greek Turkey, on 6 12, while the peoples tradition put he as symbol of hope and rebirth (manumission) on Christmas. Maybe not a communist, but a freedomfighter, for sure ! Now, with some "racist pretending antiracial campains", Zwarte Piet - Black Bara -, the black gratefull princeling - became often again a dirty servant, but a white dirty servant.... Modern times...I think the kids prefer a black kind princeling more than a dirty white servant....And the ture story is one of love, freedom, gratefullness...

I've not understand a story that is completely nonsense and illogic ,is confusing ,maybe because you dont know english ,or maybe you try to explain a tale of your country ,but is confusing and historically incorrect ,you mention a specific period in history and if an historian go to look he can find nothing ,but tales of that period in a certain place in Europe ,I show you an example , according to old british tales king Arthur took the "sword in the rock" somewhere in England ,the reality is that the "sword in the rock" actually exist ,but not in England ,but in central Italy ,in the Abazia di San Galgano ,close to Siena ,now ,Galgano is not an italian name and in the middle ages some english mercenary where "working" in italy ,so ,maybe when they went back home they referred that they saw a "sword in the rock" somewhere ,passing from mouth to mouth the initial story changed completely ,apart for this "sword in the rock" ,and everybody can see for himself that the s"sword in the rock" is still there ,so king Arthur never took it with him as the english saga said

@@pasolo2324 Do you know about Flanders traditions? ... Verify. Know Roger Botte, Alessandro Stella, Cathrine Vidrovitch, -Henri Bresc are reputated historians, having worked on slavery. And Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet is my countries tradition, so hw can you say it is wrong? Concenring counter-pope Felix, Niccolo Tedesci, you can already google, for more, you will have to consult some books of those historians. Know too that the Arthurian legends are from Persian origin, have voyaged in time and space, leaving locally enriched traditions along the road.

@@cauwenberghsroeland8607 as you say ,these are traditional history ,and in the past people did not have reference books ,only a few know how to read ,and also ,passing from one mouth to another things changes ,I like roman history ,because they wrote a lot and the differences between one author to the other are little ,different story in the european middle ages ,that was a period of tales passing from a generation to the other and everytime changed a little ,until becoming completely different ,I've lived in Amsterdam 1 and a half years but I do not know anything about Nederland ,apart that was the land of the Batavi (roman auxilia) ,what I'm saying is that one thing is a tradition ,another is the proved historical facts ,even about popes of the past there are a huge lot of tales ,the misinformation is not a invencion of this time ,have you read "the name of the rose" of Umberto Eco ? That's a very good book that portrait the time of the tales and show a very realistic situation of that time ,I call the late middle ages and the early renaissance "the time of the tales"
