On behalf of anyone too broke to own both of these, I appreciate this video. This was awesome and thorough. That said, as a metal player with geek prog influences, it's almost a toss up but that Recto has more of a bite on the highs in its high gain rhyrhm but the V has a bit more of an even frequency spread. So I wouldn't dare say one is better than the other - just that I prefer the recto.

These are hands down the best sound demos on youtube. I love that you actually try out different guitars and many scenarios where these pieces of gear would be used. I hate the "here's a demo of the amp using a Les Paul" and nothing else. You know, I want to know how it performs with a tele as well, a strat, a modern ibanez, or a modern high output active pickup. Also very well recorded, and in the context of a mix and not just pentatonic blues licks using poor mic'ing techniques.

Wow, thanks for doing this video...it's the best I've seen by far comparing these two amps. It's a great help to me, because as someone who grew up on the Marshall sound, I've been trying to determine if Mesa can give me tones that are not identical, but lean in that direction. I like the versatility of Mesa, and was blown away at how good the cleans were. On the other hand, I stay in the more classic rock end (Aerosmith, KISS, Stones, The Who, etc), so I'm not sure how much I'd use the gain channels. There seemed to be some gain tones on both that I might like, just quite a bit more low end that I'm accustomed to. Anyway, like I said, this was a very helpful video, and I really appreciate all the thought and work you put into it!

Fantastic demo. If you only have one amp and you're eclectic in tastes, the Mark V is the perfect amp because it can sound like pretty much anything. For most, it's not worth almost twice as much as the Mini though, because The Mini Rectifier with an EQ pedal is equally versatile, sounds just as good, arguably looks cooler and is more customizable with different colored face plates, colored LEDs, etc. People go on and on about how great the gain is on these amps (for good reason) but my biggest shock was how great the cleans are. Maybe not quite enough to make me sell my Vox/Celestion Blue with NOS tubes, but surprisingly close

I’m really new to gear, guys, so please go easy on me. But I’m confused by what I’m seeing, or more accurately, what I’m not seeing. What cabinet is he running his heads through? I see his workflow information, but there’s no mention of a cabinet speaker. I am aware of ampless guitar rigs, where the guitar is plugged into preamp pedals, and run into a PA, or the guitar is connected directly to a computer and managed in a DAW, and heard through monitor speakers. What I’m not sure of is how, 2:03 if there is no speaker cabinet, is he connected a head to a computer? Things have changed so much since I last played seriously. It used to be you’d pick between a combo amp, or a head and cabinet, and use either pedals to shape sound, or put together a rack. Thanks!

Mark: tighter, more focused, somewhat nasal thing happening in the upper mids. More sterile cleans. Recto: looser, more open, more harmonic complexity. Juicier cleans. I think the recto takes this one.

To my ears, Mark V is much more open and crunchy/clear but can sound flat, while rectifier sounds a bit traditional tube distortion when distortion kicks in it's congested and punchy. I don't really like the lows and the high sizzle on it. The lead is more forward and less flat. I take rectifier for the lead tone and mark v for everything else.

I’ve owned the mark v:25 and the mark IV. Cranked up with the drummer the IV killed in cleans and high gain but that mid gain channel was awful. I think the 35 could be the winner. The recto sounds good, it’s not what I want to play with, but it’s a comfortable familiar tone. Probably more rectos on the albums I grew up with than anything else.

One piece of advice: start with the regular tonestack controls at noon and very carefully work from there. Copying settings from other (famous) players did not work for me at all. The Mark V has a pretty good balance with the eq set to noon. For metal perhaps lower the bass a bit and raise the treble for more tightness but don't overdo it.

The IR / cab you use is going to affect the tone the most. I have a Mark V 90W as well and it sounds amazing when put through the right IRs. I suggest Celestion V30 based cab IRs.
@jsd19824 жыл бұрын
@Nilly Sigger Yes, more master volume will saturate the power amp stage and get you some squishy compression added to the tone. This combined with slightly less gain will get you a more response attack which feels similar to classic 80's metal tones. I rarely have the gain pushed higher than 2 o'clock in IIC+ mode.

I did found the Mark series way too dark sounding, kinda veil (even with the treble maxed out see 1:56) and the Recto unfortunately becomes very flubby when pushing the gain. The TC-50 is has the right balance with 3 channels and uses the big tubes we love so much (EL34, 6L6, 6V6). But to each his own.

I never put EQ or compression on the guitars in my videos. When I add reverb or delay I always state it in the video.
