Messy Minimalist You need to stop downing yourself. You did great. That is not a small dent. It's a big dent. You just have to keep at it. Even if it's only once a week or once a month. It does get less and it's worth it. Just like weight gain and weight loss. You didn't get all that stuff overnight, it took years of collecting and it will take some time to get rid of it. Good luck. I love your personality and your channel.

This is not what defeat looks like! Defeat is when you open the garage door, look around, sigh, and close the door again. What you have is progress! Keep building on that. It is working, and it's great seeing how happy you are when you are saying good bye to clutter.

If it makes you feel any better, I spent my entire weekend "cleaning" which basically consisted of putting things in garbage bags, doing laundry, and washing dishes. TWO FULL DAYS of cleaning, and I never even got to the vacuuming stage. lol I had to take two car loads of garbage and cardboard to the dumpsters at my work, because I couldn't fit more in my garbage cans...because I forgot to put the garbage out for pick up the week before. Such is my life. lol

"When you start unearthing things you haven't seen in a long time, it actually makes you question your own sanity"...I cracked up when you said that! I know that feeling. You are delightful to watch. You are making good progress, that's what matters. I started a major "declutter" project about 5 years ago after my youngest (of 4) left home. The goal was to go through every closet, cupboard, drawer, nook and cranny and get rid of junk. It's been like I've done rounds, go through it once, then again and then again, each time is a little easier and I gotten more ruthless with each round. Keep at it, you've got the determination....you'll get there! ~Dawne

An item may have had enough value to be put in the garage, but it DIDN'T have enough value to be kept in your home. And trust me, I'm a messy person too so I get it. But my non messy husband has helped me understand that if it doesn't have enough value to be kept in the house, it needs to go. I went through the remaining boxes from our move a year or so ago and only kept things that were needed. So very few things, even though some may have had sentimental value, were kept. If I hadn't needed it in the two years since the move (at that point) then I didn't need them.

I purged so many free pens last year- took them all into work as customers always steal our pens. I only use 1 brand of pens and I'm still using the same 10 pack I bought at the start of university 3 years ago, so gave the 'good' ones that were the wrong brand to my sister. It was oddly liberating, I now know where all my pens are, and I don't feel bad about getting rid of them as I know they went to a good home.
@Spookysara317 жыл бұрын
This might sound weird but if you have pens you don't want a grocery store cashier might appreciate them. Customers often run off with their pens and they need to have one for signing checks and WIC checks for customers.
@brrjohnson81317 жыл бұрын
Those free marketing pens run out of ink quickly. Every time I find one I like, poof it's empty. I leave any pens I don't like with the next cashier I encounter, they're always thankful. Put them in your purse & you won't forget to get rid of them. I used to carry my favorite pen that I'd refill, then I realized how heavy it was to carry & the trouble getting it back from anyone who borrowed it, once it left a whole in my purse, it stayed home. No more worries.
@shammydammy26107 жыл бұрын
This. I used to work in a clinic and we got all sorts of drug advertisement pens, so I usually had a scrub top pocket full of them. I was in line at the store when the cashier told the person in front of me that she was out of pens and needed to go get one from another cashier. I just handed her all of the pens I had squirreled away in my pockets.

I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I just wanted to let you know that you are so inspiring! I started my decluttering using the konmari method in January. And it all started bc about half of my garage had boxes almost to the ceiling. Like you, I have moved a ton and hadn't even opened some of the moving boxes from 8-10 years ago! It is so freeing to let it all go! Most of the moving boxes I've gone through are either trash, donation, or recycling. I've kept very few things. Keep up the great work and always have the picture of how you want your house to look and feel so that it keeps you going!

You've made SIGNIFICANT progress! To everyone, who is tackling minimizing, I want to say, that I don't think there is ever truly an end. We change--our wants and needs and lifestyles continue to evolve. The important thing is remaining flexible and re-evaluating our possessions frequently, asking ourselves, if they facilitate or hinder our current needs and plans for our future journeys. Re-evaluating, as you have done here, not only clears our space, but also helps facilitate more intentional decisions of what to bring into our future lives, and it re-establishes the value of the $ and time we sacrifice for 'things'. The boot cleaning cloths come to mind. In the future, you will probably reconsider buying unnecessary items and/or items that serve a singular function when you already own things capable of the same function. AND you'll probably be less likely to succumb to upsells from sales reps, in general. You've not only cleared your space; but, you've made significant progress towards creating your future. If you were an artist and your future a painting, your progress represents not only selling formerly completed works of art, but also having already chosen the canvas, most of the paints, and probably even the subject of your next painting!

You have been so much help, recording your journey of minimalization (what a word!). I have had some hard punches in my life in the past 10 or more years that froze me for a long time. I am not a hoarder, but a lady that has inherited so many things as my family members passed away. Some of the items I love. Most I want to find a home for. Thanks to you, Rachel, I have been able to make some teen-age steps (vs. baby steps). I love your personality and your natural messiness. The 1st garage video is hilarious, and I enjoy very much you sharing your reactions to the items that you find. I've watched maybe 10 vids of yours, starting with the 5th and going back to the 1st. Too much commenting. Just thank you, girl! (I have pic frames to get rid of too). :)

First of all, everyone needs a lava lamp lol. So I have an issue, whenever you show things you are getting rid of I find myself thinking, "Oh that's a neat item, I need a thing like that, I should go shopping" or whatever I have a shopping addiction and seeing other people's things makes me want things but at the same time hearing you explain why you held onto an item and why you are getting rid of it helps me to put that same logic towards my stuff. It helps me get rid of stuff I've been hanging onto for too long. I have the "I might need this one day" syndrome but if I haven't needed it in 5 years I don't think I'll need it soon. I haven't bought anything since watching your videos.

I wish we had a garage, I know for my husband it would be for the car and his tools and that would be it, but maybe I want one just for the thought of been able to put stuff in it. Before I started to decluctter my house I wish soo wish I had taken photos so I could see my progress. I know I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff (13 bags of clothes and I'm redoing clothes now, 4 bags of books, 1 bag of bathroom products, 1 bag of out of date tablets, 1 bag of wires, 3 bags of paperwork, 6 bags of teddies, 2 bags of dvds and cds...) but because everywhere else just seems to still have too much and it's all so unorganized I feel like I've done nothing. And I've just re discovered why I don't leave comments... I ramble. Sorry. PS. when you look through stuff do you ever think to yourself what the he'll was I thinking, why oh why did I get that? I love your videos and as I was watching this one, my 2-year old walked up during the time lapse part of you working in the garage and he said "Look at her go! She's doing it!" So you were being cheered on by us both! :) I too have been working on getting rid of excess things in my house and slimming down our belongings. It's a process, but every little bit is chipping away at it, so keep up the good work because it inspires me to do the same.

You've done such a good job getting started!!! I've been purging for almost two years ever since I moved into my current apartment and it's definitely been a process but so well worth it. It's good to know that I won't be dragging unnecessary items with me when I move on to my next space as well as cluttering up the space I'm currently in.

i have been trying to go from messy hoarder to minimalist myself, and it is absolutely an ongoing challenge, My home does stay much neater and with less useless clutter than it did, but I still have a long way to go and your videos really do help! My folks are all about keeping everything they have ever set eyes on forever, and in trying to ensure they at least live safely and have space to get around, and live relatively hygeinically, I have been up close and personal with their hoard, and it is very motivational to tackle my own little mini hoards. As a crafter, it can be difficult,( as my interests in specific crafts and hobbies wax and wane), to keep all my little supplies and things limited and organized, and I also struggle with the maybe I can use it in a project thing. Seeing you be so honest with yourself and us and tackle your weak spots head on is very inspirational and I find myself renewed and rededicated to the cause! Thanks so much!

Good luck with everything! I don't have too many hobbies that involve supplies, but I think if I did, there would be some major clutter happening! Sounds like you're in need some some organizing tips too, which I don't have but hope one day to start organizing more myself :) Take care and keep it up!

A lot of my mates have a hoarding problem, so whenever they offer me something, I accept it even if I don't want it. if I don't accept it, they will keep it in their room. I figured I can donate it instead of waiting for then to.

Wow, you're off to a great start! The relief you feel after this is done will be immense. When it comes to lamp bases, I would test it with a light bulb, and if it still works, donate it. My favorite lamp base was bought at a garage sale for $2 and I found the perfect shade for it a couple years later.
