It’s amazing, since those items were left behind, the Industrial Age happened, the invention of the light bulb, flight, two world wars and a number of others, Bill Haley’s Comet, the Beatles and the digital revolution to be able to watch this on my phone. All the while they were laying in the exact place they were left.

My 3x great grandad was from Indiana and was a supply wagon driver that went on Sherman’s March. We have a written account of his civil war experience and a few of his war artifacts. He said he grieved for people that he met on the way and the pitiful sights he experienced.

I just finished reading a book by Jeff Sharra about Sherman's march to the sea and then off up into the Carolinas. It was a really good read and gave one a really good insight into how big and area was involved. Confederate forces were always along the fringes of the march trying to find a situation in which they might be able to fight. Although there were no real major battles between Atlanta and Savannah, it was sobering to read how many casualties there were from the constant dinky little skirmishes. Sherman's "bummers" who were sent out to forage were occasionally picked off and often brutally treated by the Confederates. Judging from the maps and movements of both sides during the march, I suppose as long as anyone is near the march corridor the possibility exists of finding something dang near anywhere. I wonder if the exact locations of all the places where Sherman's men crossed the rivers and streams is known. If so Aquachigger would find some stuff in the water I'm sure!

No pewter CW buttons just a few flat buttons. We find very little Confederate anyway. This was the staging area for the 4th Corps, Army of the Cumberland, prior to the Atlanta Campaign. Therefore most of our relics are Union.

Wasn't the handle hallmarked on the back?
@carouselcreativecrafts89728 жыл бұрын
That handle may not be period, but with all those marks on the back you should be able to date it as well as determine where it was made and the maker. From that quick flash of the back it looked like there were four or five markings. That is usually a good sign on things like that.
@TarheelDiggin8 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thoughts regarding the handle - I'm thinking early 1900's, but I'll take your advice and look a little harder at those maker's marks. Thanks!

What did it say on the back of the spoon handle ? Was you able to find out anything on that piece metal that you said could have been part of a buckle ? Great video and finds ! Thank you for taking me along for the adventure ! Does I mean infantry on the button ?

Thanks Steve! I think the back of the spoon just had a makers mark. I never did solve the puzzle of that decorative metal piece, but it certainly had lead backing. I appreciate the comments my friend! HH

Not trying to jump on y'all's train, but where do you find your information? I live in Aiken, S.C., and there was a battle here in Feb. 1865. However there is little to no mention of it in any archives so I actually just gave up on it, but both armies headed toward Columbia, S.C. by the middle of Feb., and I thought i could find their marching routes...wrong, I can't find diddly on neither the march of Kilpatrick's union force, nor Wheeler's Confederates, and I know they were here. Do you have, or can you offer any suggestions on what I can do?
@topgun575720004 жыл бұрын

Minor excitement and no intrinsic value in the finds but terrible waste of the story they could have told had it been a proper archeological dig examining the items in context . History changes with new knowledge. Who knows what clues even a modest site such as this could have revealed.
