10:40 You could als see the verse section as in A Dorian. Also the heavy riff in between, if it weren’t for the c# in the transitional F# powerchord. The verse guitar solo also has the f# sharp in it which suggests A Dorian mode (or E Aeolian). But the harmony part of that solo has (again) this ‘out of place’ c# in it which makes it on its own technically an E Dorian or B Aeolian given the other parts of the song, but could be any other mode really). But overall the vibe is mainly A Dorian because of the C chord included. The mid section seems at first glance like an E Aeolian (or still A Dorian) but the c# included in the powerchords and harmonized parts from there on suggest E Dorian and (or) subsequently B Aeolian (just like intro). Metallica, especially Kirk In his solos, have been “accused” of using the “wrong” modes over certain chord progressions, but I love it personally because it creates very interesting melodic tensions and maintains that rebel innocence which often makes timeless music. Excellent video as always!

I actually got to meet metal joe guy mentioned 3:40. When I went to go see a “murder in the front row” (documentary about thrash metal for those that don’t know) before the movie started, he went up to a couple people in front of me and was talking about how metallica stayed at his house in 83 and 84. And keep in mind there wasn’t a lot of people there maybe 40ish so it was easy to hear. He was showing pictures and everything to the people in front of me, and then it turned out he was in the Movie! He was in it for like a minute or two talking about stuff. I didn’t talk to him as much as the people in front of me, but me and my dad talked to him a bit quickly and he seemed really nice. Him and others from around New Jersey run a group named the “Old Bridge Militia Foundation”

I always felt that the riff between the intro and main riff was just A minor scale starting off on the F note. It's like when you write riffs in B minor (for example) and write complimentary riffs with starting off on another part of the scale. Like starting on a G note like what Fade to Black did with the F.
@rogerlouttit54515 жыл бұрын
Using similar notes was something obvious to use, but the riff itself is in A minor. Edit: it's my opinion of how I saw the riff. I'm not here to correct anyone. I found legitimacy in his breakdown.

I think another thing worth mentioning is that the intro and outro are basically the same thing - the outro is just twice as slow. Both use the same motif (B F# G), and in both, the top note in the three first chords is G and it changes to A in the fourth chord. The bassline is slightly different, though (B A B C# in the intro, B A G A in the outro), but it is clear that both sections are based on the same musical idea. And I guess this is also what creates some kind of a continuity between the different sections - you don't just have random riffs after random riffs, but you come back to old ideas as the song progresses. Edit: Kirk even makes a reference to the intro solo in the outro solo. Both use the same melody/rhythm G F# E F# E D A B. Compare 5:28 to 0:22 in the song.

Some suicidal people reported that after they decide to commit suicide they become suddenly happier and to other they might seem like they're getting better. When the middle section hits and James starts talking about he's going to ,,just say goodbye" the sound of it abruptly changes to happier feel, victorious even. The fact that the chorus has no words, at first I didn't even notice because it sounded chorus-ey enough but it did give me a sense of something missing that I can't define.

Careful with assumptions, guys. While it's certainly not impossible to learn the intro lead piece the first time you pick up a guitar, I do agree it is hard to believe.
