In this video I am going to assemble the new mainshaft so I can adapt this transmission to the Dana 18 transfer case. New tools shown to make rebuilding the 465 easier.

Thank you so much for the detailed rebuild! I am doing a t56 right now, and I've got a 465 in my truck. If the time comes I will have much more confidence. I know this isn't a super popular video, but the ones that are watching it share my appreciation, I am sure

Brian, I'm not doing a rebuild like this, but never know what is ahead down the road. I watch your videos because you are talented and knowledge. I'm willing to learn, and your willing to teach. Thanks for video.

I'll watch it. May not do that trans but I'm sure the basic principles apply to all.hmmm. This is a great learning channel. Thanks for all your time.

Thanks Brian....I've used your vids for my 70cj5 and now my 58 Wagon...rebuilds of D18s, 3speeds, D44s, and now a perfect sm465 with D18 adapter set-up! SBC to 465 to D18 is slowly going into the 58 wagon....thanks!

I am glad my videos are helping with your projects. The 465 is a great transmission and one of my favorites. Follow along with the video series and you will have a perfect setup in no time at all. Thanks for watching

Yes please show the top cover rebuild, and thanks for the numbers on your factory tools. By the way, I looked at my Novak adapter, it does clock the t case over, but there is no optional positions like the AA one. Thanks Brian! Will.

Any chance of an NP 435 transmission rebuild video? These videos are INVALUABLE, worth the time and effort you’ve spent! Much appreciated!

I don't have any 435's in the shop to rebuild but would do one if one comes in.

@@metalshaperJeep do you know of a transmission similar enough, that watching a rebuild of it would be helpful with rebuilding the np 435? Thank you!
@metalshaperJeep2 жыл бұрын
@@truckerbase The 465, and even the 420 are the closest to the 435 that I know of. Internals are basically the same, just different sizes and tooth patterns. Just be sure to keep everything in order and not twisted around. Once you get into it take your time and you should be able to rebuild your 435 with patience and care.

For the NP435 transmission disassembly, what is meant by the phrase “lock the transmission in two gears” listed in the written directions?

Got an 86 CJ7 that will be getting the full treatment soon. The 465 video was one of my most unpopular videos so not sure if anybody would watch a t-176 and Dana 300 rebuild.

Hi Brian yes I would love to see the top rebuilt. I am grateful you put these videos out. I’m trying to desire between a sm420 and a sm465. I would like to send my Intermediate shaft gear to you to have the roller bearing modification done. I mean when I get the jeep, I’m going to use the jeep to haul logs out of the forest with a log arch trailer. Gonna need a strong drive train! Thanks for all you share God bless you and yours.

The 465 is my favorite. the 420 is good, but I like the 465 better. More parts availability, and super strong.

@@metalshaperJeep Hi Brian that you for that, I will when time comes install a sm465. I like that you do the middle gear bearing mod on the 18. Probably less noisy and will last longer. I want to build a nice Jeep to help with logging. Thanks as always for sharing

Great video, im rebuilding one right now and my front counter shaft bearing is very loose on the end of the shaft, is that normal? My kit came with 2 different needle bearings, one fits the shaft good but doesn't fit the case.

Thanks for the videos. On my SM465 the output shaft has a retaining nut and nut locking ring. The adapter for my transfer case is getting hung up on the locking ring (O.D. is 3"). In your video the output shaft bearing is held in place with the adapter plate and there is no threads on the output shaft for a retaining nut and nut locking ring. From this I assume that I can simply take off the nut and nut locking ring and my adapter will hold the bearing in place. What are your thoughts about doing this?

I wanted to see how the needle bearings went in .my input shaft bearing when out and needle bearings fell out .I ordered new needle bearings and front input shaft bearing.is there a cage for the needle bearings? You do great work.I'm new to trans.
@wlogue3 жыл бұрын
No cage, you have to secure them with assembly lube upon reassembly. They can be a bit of a pain. Hope this helps.

Just curious. Freezing the shaft as well as heating the bushing? Wouldnt the greater temp difference cause the bushing to cool faster then a static temp shaft? I know when doing wrist pins on rods. . we only heat the rod. Otherwise the rod shrinks to fast. Love the videos was just curious on that lil part. Im gettin ready to go thru my 465 in my 82 k1020 behind my 6.2. So these videos will make my time alot easier.
@metalshaperJeep3 жыл бұрын
Freezing the shaft and heating the bushing is the best way to go . These bushings are very fragile and shatter easily. When shaft is frozen and bushing is heated they almost drop on, then everything gets back to room temp and locks it on there. You can press them on at room temp but make sure you have the correct install tool and start it perfectly square on the shaft or it will break very easily.

my trans 465 was rebuilt so i am just adding the nova adapter kit for my dana 20 do i need to buy the bushing for fist, gear second or can i use the old ones thanks
@metalshaperJeep3 ай бұрын
All depends on the condition of the bushings. I always use new, but if you have a fresh rebuild and are just changing the mainshaft your bushings may still be in good shape.

How much is the horizontal lenghtwise clearance of the blocking ring between the hub and the gear?
@wlogue3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, I'm watching this series for the second time in preparation to do my own for the 3b. Thanks again! can you explain the 3rd gear upgrade? I thought the only real change to these was eliminating the rubber deal on the early countershaft. I know there's not a lot of us out there doing these, I could email you if you'd like. thank you, Will.
@metalshaperJeep3 жыл бұрын
Yes, upgrade the countershaft gear from the rubber gear to a new all steel gear. Next you need the proper spacer behind it before you press the new gear on. Then if you want the best possible set up get a new third gear assembly designed to not jump out of gear. It will come with the gear and blocking ring. You can get all these parts for a reasonable cost from Novak. Not sure what year transmission you have but probably early if you have the rubber in your cluster gear. Pay very close attention to your press on bushings. If you follow along on the videos I think you should be ok. I tried to cover everything you will need to know to rebuild it properly, but if I missed anything let me know. I have one more video coming out soon about lubricating it and a few things you will need to know if you used a twin stick transfer case like I did. Brian
@wlogue3 жыл бұрын
@@metalshaperJeep Thanks for the reply, I'll order the updated 3rd with my kit. my trans. is late enough to not need work on the countershaft. Definitely interested in lubrication, and I am using the twin stick as well. taker easy, Will
