Thank you so much. When I first searched metatarsalgia on KZbin, so many crappy videos show up. I have seen a podiatrist at my VA hospital and was prescribe very generic orthotics. The problem persists, so I joined a couple of Facebook group on metatarsalgia and all the posts were about how nothing works. Today, I go back on KZbin to see if I can find a better video, and this one was the best. Thank you for being so giving with your time to answer questions in the comments, I took screens shots of them all, including the links, they were filled with great information. Thanks again!

Have you tried a custom orthotic with a metatarsal relief bar? Also, a tight calf muscle is one of the biggest contributing factors to Morton's neuroma and metatarsalgia. Use a slant board to stretch your calf.

Can you have both Metatarsalgia and Morton's neuroma? What if your foot becomes majorly numb each night. Then reduces during the day. There used to be tingling and the skin felt burning, but that ended. There always seemed to be extra layers of tissue at the ball of my feet. I visited a podiatrist and he just gave my foot a shot for pain relief. He didn't discuss any more and didn't verify what is in my feet. Schuler Shoes store gave me special rocking shoes and a special internal sole with a high arch and extra padding at the center (below the ball of your foot). Should I go back to a different podiatrist?
@OrthoEvalPal
@OrthoEvalPal 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristi, Yes, you can have both. Metatarsalgia is a lot easier to treat. With that being said, I treat them very similarly. I do a lot of calf stretching (on the EZ Slant) because the tighter your calf the more pressure you put on the ball of the foot which can irritate both. Offloading the trouble area with a custom orthotic and metatarsal relief can help. The rocker bottom shoe can help and avoid walking on hard surfaces until it resolves. Good luck!

Walking and standing are now a chore, experiencing pain at rest too. I've been told I'm not a candidate to have the MN's removed as any surgery will trigger the LD. Am using custom orthotics, wide toe box shoes, calf stretches. Is there anything else I can do? As it is getting progressively worse.

Would it be normal to experience very sharp pain during that examination? That curve/indention in the ball of my foot that goes from the 1st-3rd metatarsals is very tender, carefully putting on a sock triggers the pain, putting any pressure on the front half of my foot, and bending my toes upward all cause pain. Mine came on suddenly (dull aching pain to sharp stinging severe pain within an hour, and no pain before that). I don’t even want to massage it bc of how tender it is.

What is this pad called? And where can I buy one? I have an itch on the top of my foot, worst along where my toe and foot meet on all my toes. I've had previous podiatrist visit where he had me tape my 2nd metatarsal forward, where some ball of foot pain was pretty bad. That and some steroids stopped it for a while. I gained a lot of weight after Covid, and I enjoy running but it's gotten bad even with taping my 2nd toe forward. The longer distance I run the more the top of my foot itches.

My feet don’t feel like there are rocks in them; they feel more like the bone is about to pierce through the ball of each feet and the curve of each heel. At best, they feel bruised. I’ve been icing them and putting CBD isolate muscle rub and Arnicare gel on them. I tried buying an insole from Amazon, but I don’t know how to tell if it’s actually designed for metatarsalgia or not. Wearing certain shoes feels better and others worse. It’s weird. Nike Pegasus feels better, Asics Gel-Excite worse. Some memory foam shoes I never heard of feel better, Skechers memory foam feel worse. I dunno what the difference is, but I wish I could just make the discomfort and pain finally stop and my feet be healed and normal.

Hello! Nice video! I would like to ask a question.. you said metatarsalgia is usually between the 2nd and 3rd, while morton's neuroma is more common between the 3rd and 4th.. but is it also possible for metatarsalgia to occur between the 3rd and 4th? My case is the following: about 2 months ago, I started feeling a very light pain, between the 3rd and 4th of my left foot, only right after waking up. I wake up, feel the pain (it's really light, but annoying) for about 5 minutes (sometimes less) and then it goes away. After that, I can walk as much as I want, I can run, I can jump rope, anything, and I won't feel any pain or discomfort. I will only feel it again in the next morning, after I wake up. As I am more self-conscious about the problem now, my mind is focused on it, so it seems like sometimes I feel a very light pain depending on the movement, or it feels like it is a little bit swollen.. but I don't feel anything wrong when I touch it with my hands. I'm trying some streching, massaging, warm water compress (also tried ice compress), and also tried some diclofenac ointment and pills.. but it doesn't seem to change much. Could this be metatarsalgia in the beggining stages? or morton's neuroma? why does it hurt only after waking up?

@@OrthoEvalPal thanks for your reply. A few days ago I came up with the idea that this pain could be resulting from being barefoot all day long.. as we are under quarentine, I haven't really worn shoes for about 2 months, except for the few times I went shopping. So I now started wearing shoes during the day, even at home... and guess what? The pain is 90% gone. I noticed I step on a different spot of my left foot when walking with shoes.

Two weeks ago I started feeling some pain between my 3rd and 4th toe right below the metatarsals extending mainly to the 4th toe, left foot. I don't feel any pain in any of the other toes or areas. I am a huge walker. 35 miles per week. 365 days/per year. Getting some age on me too. A couple years ago I noticed this "pinching sensation" between my 4th and 3rd toe - like a cramp. But it lasted only for a few minutes and would disappear for months. I do wear good running shoes for runners. Mainly Newtons and Altras. These shoes are well thought of by runners world-wide. They do not feel too tight and fit well. The Newtons have lugs on the bottom that "spring" you forward. Even though they are cushioned, the lugs do put some pressure into the ball of the joint. The Altras have a wider toe-box and zero drop and more even cushioning. This pain started with a new pair of Newtons about 2 weeks ago. I am switching back to Altras. What I feel now is like when your funny bone is tweaked on your elbow. I feel it on each step. With shoes or even barefooted in the house. No visible sign. But if run my finger over the metatarsal area, I can feel that little nerve or tissue, "pop" just like the funny bone. I also just ordered some inserts called Powerstep Pinnacle Plus Met Insoles. They are described as: "BUILT-IN METATARSAL SUPPORT: The design of the Pinnacle PLUS allows for spreading and cushioning of metatarsal heads for pain relief." I've read 100s of good reviews on many ortho websites. It also feels like my 3rd and 4th toes are pushing into each other. For the heck of it, tonight I put a "make-shift" spacer between those toes. It seems to feel better. I also wear sports/runner socks from Feetures. They conform to your feet. They don't move around when sweating. They prevent blisters. They work well. I'm wondering if they may be constricting the splaying of my toes on impact. When walking, the pain pretty much disappears after about a mile or so... and subsides for quite a few hours afterwards, usually the rest of the day. The pain at this point is not excruciating - more of an annoyance. I am assuming this is Morton's Neuroma. Any thoughts?

I was a little upset with a lot of KZbin content providers who give the public false hope and make claims that are false or do not pertain to everyone just to gain subscribers like..."This 1 exercise will CURE your plantar fasciitis!!" With that being said, I may also do some content geared toward folks like yourself who are looking for understandable, sound medical advice. Thanks for the comment and for watching! Paul

I have some questions because I’ve had two doctors say two different things. Doc 1, neuroma-we’ve done multiple injections, pads, etc and he says surgery. He’s also been to prison years ago due to prescription abuse issues so might pass on that one. Doc 2, seemed to be a doctor that was highly offended that I’ve dared to study my condition on my own and he said All of the doctors on KZbin were bogus. So he decided he wasn’t going to agree with the neuroma plan and even with that huge round callus the size of a quarter between my 2nd and 3rd toe, he’s going more towards plantar. He gave me that anti inflammatory medicine that about killed my kidneys, great pads he showed he how to properly tape on and the boot. Of course here I am 3 weeks later and NO closer to being able to ever walk properly again!! It’s almost as though he realized my insurance deductible was met and wanted to milk it to death running me back and forth but it’s so hard to get away from work. Would you take a look at my pic?

Between my 3rd and 4th toe I get what feels like a cramp or Charlie horse. Then it feel like it migrates to my arch. This happens when I stretch my big toe after wearing heels. Sometimes it feels like the 3rd and 4th toe are stuck together. Is this Morton's neuroma? It goes away when I stop stretching or roll a ball under my foot or when I bend my toes upward.

Hi Deirdre, Morton's will cause longer lasting pain than that. Your metatarsals are taking a beating because of the heels and a tight calf is a bigger contributor. This may be helpful: ezslant.com. Here is the EZ Slant KZbin channel: kzbin.info/door/2Nn4Nfz-GDDzKlXYAe9TQw. Best of luck!

My middletoe is swollen and stiff each morning, and then as the day progress the swell and pain goes down. Right now i can´t stand on it properly in the morning. I have been home the last days to stay of it as much as possible and get it to heal (and spreading the toes, some massaging and stretching) , but in the morning it has been the same for the last 4 days. It sounds like Mortens Neuroma, but i don´t hear anyone talking about swollen toes ? I have an appointment with a foot-specialist next week. cheers

In the case of metatrasalgia, is it normal for the ball of the foot to be tender on the outside for hours after a long shift? I am desperately trying to self-diagnose. I don’t know if I have metatarsalgia or a bunion. All I know is that any length of time on my feet exceeding an hour is hell. I don’t even know if it’s from the wrong shoe size or just not enough support

Mine hurts on the bottom. It's swollen and painful. I can't tell if it's coming from the joint in my middle toe or in-between my middle and fourth toe. It's causing me to limp.

@@OrthoEvalPal I had a steroid shot for morton's neuroma and it helped until I went back to work three days later. I have to wear steel toe boots, and on concrete 10 hours a day. Now the bone in the ball of my foot hurts where it meets the middle toe. Can I have more than one thing going on? I think I need to see a "good" foot doctor, there just isn't any at all in my town.

Hi Susan, I always have these patients do calf stretches. I invented this and this is why I use. kzbin.info/door/2Nn4Nfz-GDDzKlXYAe9TQw I shy away from giving full treatment plans on KZbin because there are many diagnoses that can look like this and I believe in a good evaluation in order to give good treatment. Hi I've been having pain for over a year on the inside of my big toe in between first and second toe and over the big toe bone. When I massage it I can feel a bit tingling and cracking on joint. What can this be? Ive seen 3 podiatrist and no diagnosis . I often find walking/even just standing in my shoes or just having shoes on for a period of time or even standing on a rug bring on the soreness and my foot immediately feels tired, forcing me to take of my shoes and rest my feet. X-rays and MRI negative. Your video focuses on other smaller toes so I was hoping you can give some direction. Thanks for your input.

Could a broken ankle cause metatarsargia?
@OrthoEvalPal
@OrthoEvalPal 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Serena, It's possible. If the ankle fracture causes limited dorsiflexion then the metatarsals take up much more pressure. That's why I do calf stretching with all of my metatarsalgia patients.

loucasanastasiou the doctor - I was rolled to dame very low statistic and it coming back!!!! I am looking for solution and I’m sure something can be done without drugs and cutting pieces --- when I fix it I would put the solution. So, the nutrition I would look for like blood circulation definitely and exercise-- majority would be “C” of course but it have to in the coordinations with others vitamins (I came across once and would look again) and Exercise Absolutely absolutely must!!!! I was suffering for years and blame my shoes and so it’s very far destroyed and burn non stop -- I do not use any drags no painkillers. Rolling bottle with frozen water in it ;) see ya
