MetaZoo even tried to compare the "MAP" with pokemon map (that's provided in one of their products) AND Wilderness?? Very similar to Jungle expansion from Pokemon. I can actually relate to metazoo in IP theft - I used to draw Eevee evolutions that weren’t water,fire, and lightning - and Pokémon STOLE my idea. Leaf Eevee, ice Eevee, fairy Eevee- it’s like they looked in my 2nd grade notebook and WHAM copy and paste. I’m tryna sue but can’t find a lawyer that wants to take the case. Metazoo is just trying to get free publicity. Their entire tcg is just taking the best parts of each game. They capitalized on the 2020 boom. Metazoo shows the absolute power of social media influencers to building hype. Rudy from Alpha and so many others hyping it up, acting like it is revolutionary, shilling it. If people actually enjoy it sweet but sitting around making claims like stealing ideas etc is childish and pathetic. I had no desire to try Metazoo, but I have even less desire now. I'm a big Metazoo fan and even I can find the humor in Metazoo claiming Pokemon stole something from them when Metazoo stole their art style, their IP strategy, and much more. That being said, I don't know of Metazoo people actually consider Pokemon "stealing" from them since they must be well aware of Magic's long standing "land" cards.

I think a lot of Pokemon are from Japanese folklore. MetaZoo takes from American folklore. I think MetaZoo is just playing damage control with how many aspects they take from Pokemon. For a we know, the terra types in the new Pokemon games could've been a concept in development before MetaZoo even came out

I’m a big metazoo player and collector. I think you get a few of these hyper defensive people in metazoo bc people dump on it constantly, and as someone who has been in it since the beginning, it’s not a chicken and egg situation, the constant dumping on metazoo has created the ultra defensiveness which is going to lead to dumb stuff like this which then “legitimizes” the dogpiling and creates this negative cycle. I don’t see the connection between terras and this game mechanic whatsoever, plus it’s tcg/battle system games, there is bound to be a ton of similarities. So this isn’t a great look for mz. But as far as any legitimate claim to future ip infringement, mtg and Pokémon send cease and desists like nobody’s business, so card games have a right to be protective of their ip’s and obviously metazoo could never fight Pokémon or mtg in court, so public discourse is the only recourse a game like metazoo can have. If you could see every ip theft claim from wizards or Pokémon, that would be a constant stream and trust me they would look as dumb or dumber than this- it’s just all of it happens behind closed doors. Also, the “cryptids are stealing tho” argument is honestly really dumb- basically every established card game is referential, and nobody owns cryptids, so using them doesn’t infringe on anyone’s intellectual property. This is to say that metazoo might have legitimate ip theft claims in the future, and them using cryptids is a terrible argument to delegitimate their ip theft claims.

@@OpossumBud No I get that that is your argument, but there is a difference between "borrowing" an idea that is an invention of a person or company, and "borrowing" from folklore, which isn't the property of anyone. Following the same logic, no card game could ever complain about IP infringement- Yugioh borrows from Egyptian folklore, Magic was built on a whole sword and sorcery genre that existed over a 100 years longer than they have, and Pokemon takes from Japanese folklore to create their characters and settings all the time. We at least agree that this is an overreach in terms of the claim that Pokemon is "infringing" on Metazoo's IP in this case, but Metazoo has just as much of a right to the aspects of their property that belong to them as any other card game and the fact that some of their characters (not all) are in the public domain, is irrelevant and every other major property is about equally as guilty of being referential to characters, concepts, etc that are not entirely their own.

Also an FYI, taking inspiration is a little different than directly copying things that exist with no changes. Bigfoot exists with or without MZ existing. Charizard on the other hand did not and could not have existed before pokemon and could not exist without pokemon. Pokemon also take lore and history from the entire world not just Japan. That's why every region is based on an actual place in the world. I'm not a MZ hater whatsoever either, I think the cryptid idea is pretty cool It's just not my thing but I hope it succeeds for the people who do love it. Let's just not say that inspiration and direct copying are the same thing because they aren't.

Have you ever worked in a retail establishment where you're actually responsible for sourcing product directly from the manufacturer? It's extremely common that to maintain a distribution contract, you can't sell for lower than an amount articulated in the contract. Companies do this precisely to protect their products, and manage the supply side- it's even more common with smaller companies. If stores don't want a contract with MZ, they're free to go with a secondary market distributor, but then they don't get all of the additional products, promotional material, etc that come with being a partner, so I don't understand what the issue is. The partners can make their choice, but the fact that partners aren't fleeing to the secondary market in droves probably gives you an idea that MZ is making it worth their while to remain partners. Do you expect a contract where a company has all of these obligations to you, but you have no obligations to the company?

I am enjoying MetaZoo right now, there is a lot I like about it. But yeah, I'm not gonna sit here and say Pokemon stole the Tera idea from MetaZoo. Two completely different things. Kinda like me claiming everyone that started making Pokemon youtube videos after me is copying me. When there were a ton of people before me doing it lol. Quick example, Pokemon has a few mons that could be considered cryptids or mythological whatever you want to call it. For example Lapras is based off a plesiosaur. Which I think is similar to what Loc Ness Monster, or Chessie are. I mean its based off a dinosaur, which is what these "lake monsters" are also based off of or roughly identified as. Goofy stuff like that isn't going to get me to dislike one or the other. I chuckle and move on.

Metazoo ripped off Pokémon from their bootleg Sugimori watercolor art style, the red border around the card, the card products offered (the blisters for example are 1:1 to Pokémon down to the coin , the lunchboxes they’re coming out with). Even if Pokémon copied Metazoo, there isn’t sh1t Mike and his discord echo chamber can say about it because they owe their entire existence to Pokémon. Metazoo sells fake nostalgia to adults, who they think will share it with their kids. just 4ss backwards. Pokémon created its fans with children 26 years ago, who organically passed it on to their kids. Metazoo will never be comparable to Pokémon. Ever. But We are in an era where people get into these echo chambers and start believing each other’s delusional ramblings. @@OpossumBud MZ had nothing to do with the market conditions that shot their prices through the roof. MZ promised cards and a game and delivered and people paid what they paid. If they wanted the cards, they still have the cards. If they wanted to speculate, they learned a great lesson about not speculating on volatile assets while in an obvious bubble. Everyone acts like the game fell apart, but the opposite happened- production doubled on Wilderness specifically because prices for Nightfall were out of control, reflecting increased demand, and MZ did the responsible thing to promote the health of the game, and printed to demand, doubling the printrun for Wilderness and bringing the value of MZ sealed product to similar to other card games in the secondary market (plus this is when the whole collectibles market was actively falling by the day). People are mad because they bought MZ with the sole intent of making money, which nobody at MZ was promoting in any way either verbally or through their actions. Then, the whole collectibles bubble burst and because they never knew MZ as anything other than a potential cash cow and never actually fucked with the product, they felt burned and now want to act like it's MZ's fault because they can't accept responsibility for making an obviously bad decision to leverage any kind of serious money into MZ during its initial release.

If you like MTG, you'll like MZ. It's way closer to MTG and Yugioh than it is to Pokemon. Also, as someone who is deeply entrenched in the MTG, Pokemon, and MZ online scenes, MZ is by LEAGUES the least toxic tcg community out there. People harass MZ, Mike Waddell (the creator), and the players constantly for various business practices that ALL of their beloved TCGs engaged in in their infancies. People think he's a boogeyman, because he does what literally every company spends millions and millions a year to do with their product: markets it and tries to promote its public image. Mention Pokemon, MTG, Yugioh, Weiss Schwarz, etc in a MZ space, and most of us fuck with at least one if not more. Go to a Pokemon space and mention that you like MZ, and they'll literally all shit their pants.

I mean sure Yugioh had terras and environments that affected the game play but none of that really crossed over into the actual game which is what MetaZoo is capable of doing with its 4th wall effects. Furthermore it's not a far stretch to say Pokemon could have very well been inspired from MZ. If a game isn't paying attention to it's competition, that it be small or not then it is going to stagnate. Odd that after all these years they don't introduce such a thing a now suddenly they are adding it. Obviously it could just be coincidence, but I feel like you are taking a joke or throw away comment and running with it. Most people aren't literally sitting here saying Pokemon is straight copying MZ. And as for Mike himself saying they are paying attention, I take almost everything he says with a grain of salt considering he is the creator and is bias as hell.

Pokemon isn't biting off of MetaZoo. Pokemon's R&D team typically develop new mechanics and games 2-3 years prior to even publicly acknowledging its existence. Terrain abilities existed in Pokemon before MetaZoo was even a reddit post.
