The Mexico exit tax is a real thing. But to pay you must drive back into Chetumal, Mexico, and stand in line for about 45 minutes at Banerjercito to pay it. There is a Banerjercito at the Mexican border but it is closed most of the time. They know no one wants to make the 15-20 minute trip back to Chetumal, look for the bank, look for parking, and stand in line at the bank (Banerjercito). So they collect it and put it into their pocket, and don't dare ask for a receipt unless you want to drive back to the city of Chetumal.

lol. Belize has such a better image than Mexico when we talk to people that haven't traveled to both of them. It's great that you left Belize and went to Mexico for a little more law and order. Yeah, border crossings will start being much more regular now that we are in Central America. We took 6 months on our way through Mexico and it will take an equal amount of time to cross the next 6 countries. Visa times are much shorter and the countries are much smaller. I'm glad you liked the video. I am pretty happy with the perspective it created and will probably use it for future crossings :)

Wait...so did you actually make it into Belize without the vehicle being fumigated? Have you been in places where they didn't let you get out of the car before they did it? That idea really freaks me out. Been a while since I've gone through the process crossing borders by car but hoping to do so again soon with my doggo in tow, so any info you can give me would be great.
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal2 жыл бұрын
Most borders spray the bottom of the vehicle with some pesticide, many spray from the top too. You generally drive over/through the fumigation area, so you do need to be in the car. Just roll up th windows, turn off the AC and be glad you are not doing it on a motorcycle.

I am enjoying your travels, they are great. The question I have is about the truck. I am looking to buy one myself, it is between the years 95 - 97 in the 3.4l v6. Which is the better and also how is yours holding up. Thanks for your travels it has inspired me to do the same and I know it is late in life being I am 52 but still young. Thanks
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal6 жыл бұрын
That's too cool. So glad we could help inspire you. There's lots of people in their 50s (and much older) out on the road :) I've been happy with our truck. The Idler arm is the only repetitive issue we've had, but if you're familiar with these trucks (or the pickups that they adopted the steering from) then it's an expected issue when you do as many off pavement miles as we do. I plan to upgrade this component before leaving the USA again. Aside from that... the plastic doorhandles and tailgate latch seem to fatigue at about this age and of course having 225,000 miles on the clock means that things are ripe to wear out if you don't do preventative maintenance. Assuming your looking at 4x4 trucks the only major difference from 95-97 T100s is that 1995 was the only year that the standard cab/longbed was offered with the 3.4L engine. If you want the extended cab it's of no concern. As far as I know there was only 1 manual and 1 automatic transmission offered with the 3.4l & 4x4 and there were no options offered for the rest of the driveline. All years have the option of DX(base) or SR5(luxury) packages but I don't think they changed over the years. Let me know if I can be of any additional help and Happy Hunting! The T100 can be an elusive quarry ;)

Hello, What are the details to know in central america about : 1. travelling with your dog. You're tuck long time in one place because they want to put it in quarantine ? 2. Tax on your vehicules when you go from one country to another, they will tax your vehicule each time? :)
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal5 жыл бұрын
1. We never had to quarantine the dog. It was just some extra paperwork and expense at each border. You just need a health certificate for the dog showing that it has proper vaccinations and usually each border cost $0-$25 USD, but Panama cost around $150 and Belize was around $60 2. There isn't a tax exactly, but there will be a cost for your temporary import permit and vehicle insurance for each country. It depends on your vehicle and how long you will be in each country, but we generally spent $5 - $60 for these things.
@SwallCloud5 жыл бұрын
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal Thank you, i was worried about the dog. This is also good news about the vehicules not being taxed for each border, just fees. Do we have a service map (outside of gogole earth) guiding us for this kind of "roadtrip" nature travel in central america countries? Or maybe an application? if at least we can have satellite internet access there?
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal5 жыл бұрын
@@SwallCloud I'm not sure what you mean by "service map". We mostly used Google Maps. You can download the maps for the areas you will be in onto your phone when you have an internet connection and use them offline while you are traveling. The maps are pretty good. Drive times are usually not accurate, but the routs were good through Costa Rica and Panama.

The tax is a $300 peso tax $15 its like a toll for crossing over no they didnt rip you off and $300 times two equals 600peso so they got you for $30 dollars not 40.
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal6 жыл бұрын
I'll admit that the officials didn't like the camera, so we didn't do a great job of filming and it is therefore a bit unclear in the video, but we had quite the conversation with the border agent and we definitely got charged for the tourist visas that we had already paid for in Mexicali when we entered. Equal to roughly $40 usd. It was the border agent in Mexicali that tricked us by telling us to pay her directly and gave us visas, then pocketed the cash. We didn't think that anyone would question whether or not we paid for the tourist visas, but that was the problem when we tried to leave. Since we didn't pay at the Benjercito, we didn't have receipts, and so we had to pay again.
@terapianeuromuscular56453 жыл бұрын
So annoying to always have ignorant foreigners come to Latin American countries with their whining, just enjoy. When travelling to the States I have to go through a ridiculous bureaucratic process to get a visa but its a procedure and I suggest that always keep receipts to show that all is in order, and stop the btchng :)
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any issue with the process of getting a visa in Mexico. It is very easy and a reasonable fee. We were complaining because we had to pay for the tourist visa again as we were leaving the country because we didn't have the receipt. They didn't consider the visa in our passports to be proof that we had tourist visas. It was included in the video as cautionary tale for other travelers and a warning to keep your receipt for your Mexican tourist visa if you plan on exiting into Central America.

That's why I never left the USA. I can drive from most states to other states without dealing with greedy officials who just want more money. And the law leaves me alone as long as I behave myself... Some states still have a wee bit of trouble beveling that not all bikers are bad and looking for trouble. Their thinking is still stuck in the 60's and 70's. Back then trouble just found me I didn't have to go looking for it.... LOL
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Bobby, border crossings are a pain and having the vehicle and a dog with us adds to the hassle for sure. We do our best to show up early, have all the right paperwork, have snacks and water, and just know that it is going to be a slow process so don't be in a hurry. It's hard not to get annoyed sometimes but we just try to remind ourselves, it's one lame travel day in exchange for access to another new country for us to explore : ) It's lame to be discriminated against for riding a bike. We tried to select and design our truck to look like the ones I had seen on previous trips to Latin America and don't have anything strapped to the outside. I think it helps us blend in or at least not look too fancy.

Well, he was our responsibility, so we made it work and more often than not he added joy to our lives. We know other people with dogs are considering doing this trip and hope that our videos help them decide wether or not they are willing to put up with the extra headaches or plan a different trip that is easier with a dog. The idea of abandoning your friend at a shelter because they are inconvenient is really sad to me.
