Tangerine Travels next time you go to Mexico City, try to spend a Friday night at arena Mexico for the luchas. A night out in Plaza Garibaldi as well ( but stay in the square and don’t go to the bars.. they will say it’s free to get in and they will charge you for ‘entertainment’) besides the main square is where the real party is. Also, sooooo many places to go for a drink. Like the speak easy, hanky panky’ in zona rosa.

I LOVE Mexico City! I went there last November for my birthday! And it so happened I was there during the weekend of Buen Fin - Mexico City’s version of “Black Friday” in the USA. I was in shopping heaven! I *almost* had to buy another suitcase to get everything home. 🤣 Mexico City is absolutely fabulous! I cannot wait to go back ... cuz I’m definitely going back! 😋 And I will mention... I went by myself, too... and even alone, I still had tons of fun! If you’re bored in Mexico City, you are not doing it right. 😋

@@mstyles2667 ive only been to tijuana and Ensenada but I would say all of mexico has a vibe, and its probably because 90% of the people are Mexican or from latin American country, so it has a cohesive vibe, which you don't get in America. If you go to most usa cities, its all one ethnicity or another. Miami is all latin, manhattan is largely white, other parts of nyc are black or asain or latin, san diego is everything, ,but walk across the border and its 95% latin American.

Castillo de Chapultepec was built by Viceroy Bernardo de Galvez in colonial Mexico in late 1770s and 1780s. The castle is the only one occupied by the royalty in the Americas, in this case by Empereor Maximilian of Habsburg between 1861 and 1865 (You saw his little "car" in the museum, hehe). The castle is famous also for being the last bastion of Mexican military resistance in the American invasion of 1847, you know, the one after the U.S took states like California, Arizona, New Mexico, to name a few (quite surprised you missed the murals and war monuments) the battle is remembered cause of some kids of the Colegio Militar died resisting the Americans (mostly a myth). The castle was mostly used by the Military academy, or as a observatory, and as residence of Mexican presidents since late 19th century until the 1930s. After that it has been the National Museum of history, which is beautiful as hell. And yep, the whole ruins of Templo Mayor are totally original, discovered in the late '70s under colonial buildings.

"mostly a myth"... it's heavily romanticized, like calling them "kids" when they were just teenagers or young, (or Escutia's flag stunt, that one's totally a myth indeed), but it's not like it was a made up story, which is what sounds to me when I hear "mostly a myth". Also sadly many many many more of those "kids" defending it, ended up as POW and are unfairly heavily overlooked in history (specially Miramón, 15 y.o. when he fought in Chapultepec).

@@jagwolf8079 Well, I agree with most of what you said. The word "kids" is a out of context, I just thought it was easier to explain the battle using it. Second, the battle and it's characters are a very important subject to be remembered, by referring to a "myth", I mostly wanted to stress the way only six cadets names are always associated with the battle in a type of "mythological" status, in prejudice of the superior number of Mexican defendants, including, of course, Miguel Miramón. I think maybe "myth" was another word I used wrong, lol.

The treaty was signed giving the USA the territory by Santa ana, after Mexican army attacked and killed 16 soldiers, then the USA military in 2 steps conquered Mexico city. The stories written by the soldiers that could write home are surreal, the entire city of millions was empty. Santa Ana would have lost everything if not giving up the territory he could not control, Cherokee raids hit all the way in to Mexico anyways. Not saying all history leaves a great feeling when looked back at, I am glad Mexico is a country and not a Spanish territory, I have met some of the best people from Mexico. The 2 treaties Santa Ana signed netted him $25 million at that time and the country was torn from all the previous wars and needed money for an army to defend itself from the south.

Chapultepec Castle was home of Maximiliano I and Carlota, emperors of the Glorious second Mexican Empire. The emperor Maximilian also build Paseo de la Reforma avenue.

I'm currently in China and having traveled in other countries just makes me want to explore more of my own. I have also met people from different places around the world and I see that westerners are more open minded and with a disposition to know other cultures, as I know other latinos, I feel like we all are genuinely welcoming of other cultures, contrary to the asian and Arabic cultures. I like that foreigners make videos in their native languages so other foreigners can appreciate and maybe visit my country in the future.

If you are still in Mexico City, try to visit "Sanborns de los Azulejos" which is a massive coffee shop and store built from a fantastic palace covered entirely in beautiful tiles, yes tiles and I know you love them. The location is on Madero very close to Bellas Artes--you must have just missed it. Keep up the good work kids!

Sanborns is probably the worst place to go eat, I think is owned by Carlos Slim. Last year I went to sanborns as soon we got in I felt like they send us a bodyguard it was a very uncomfortable experience he was like watching us the whole time. This happened in Guadalajara, I dont know in Mexico City, but aftet that experience never again.

Go while you can I wish I went when I was younger. Need a passport now when I was younger just an ID would have worked, before that and the drug cartels you did not need anything to cross, but better have something if stopped, history does have some good sides.

I used to live a few blocks away from Bellas Artes and the Zócalo back when I was in college. Seeing you walking down those streets brought back a lot of good memories. I don't know if smeone already mentioned it but the reason why the buildings at the Historical Center are leaning is not the earthquakes, not entirely. All that area used to be a lake and the Aztecs built the city on top of artificial islands, turning part of the lake into channels, similar to Venice or Amsterdam. Over time, as the city grew, the lake started drying out. But the ground under the city is still muddy and unstable and since the buildings are heavy and old, they started sinking. And they don't sink evenly, so they lean. You can feel it if you go inside some of those buildings.

A fact about the Mexican flag in Constitution Square, and Mars camp(Campo Marte), are in the military industry, the fabric they use are the same one used to elaborate the parachute 's soldiers, treat it to resist the weather, rain, acid rain, sun and uv ray, and the eagle and the snake are painted by hand.

If you're interested in learning yet more about other issues in Mexico, check out 'La Casa de los Amigos' near Revolution Square. And drink a few 'atolés' for me (a morning drink), and eat a few morning tamales and then eat a few evening tamales for me too. The street food is beyond amazing, along with the 'tianguis' food.

Wonderful video, as always!! Our guide in Monte Alban told us that you can tell if ruins are reconstructed because archaeologists add in small rocks among the big. If that holds true everywhere, from what I could see in the video it looks like those ruins are original constructions.

Yes, the church next to the ruins was purposely placed there, in fact, the Spanish conquistadors destroyed those two Aztec temples. Also, French Emperor Maximiliano I also took residency in the Castillo de Chapultepec.

After the great Tenochtitlan was conquered by the Spanish exploration army on August 13th 1521, one of the first thing they do was demolishing many of Aztec’s major buildings as the Templo Mayor, the biggest and most important ceremonial building ( expanded al most 7 times to make it bigger), and used many of the materials to build the first version of the cathedral (It took more than 400 years to get finished, that’s the reason because it have many architectural styles, each major constructor had his own vision about it), then was constructed with different stones and materials of places near the New Spain. The Templo Mayor Museum, was made by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, one of the most important Architects that Mexico had in its history, the museum have an interesting form similar to the snail shell with labyrinthine roads to make sure each part of the museum could be visited without lose any exposure. Ramirez Vazquez was also the architect behind the National Anthropology Museum, the new Basílica de Guadalupe, the Aztec stadium, the historic center remodulation, programmed and directed the XIX Olympic Games in Mexico City. The Castillo de Chapultepec was built to be the virrey’s Mascaró summer house around mid 1700, then was converted in the military college in 1833. In 1864 was taken by the emperors Maximiliano and Carlota and the name was changed in to Castillo de Miravalle. After the civil war(Mexican revolution) ended in 1922 when Mexico became a democratic country, the Castillo became the presidential home, more than 10 presidents and their families lived there until 1939, when the president Cardenas decided moved in to los pinos estate. Recently our new president change the presidential home in to the Palacio Nacional, next to the zócalo square. Cheers guys I really enjoy watching your videos

So, i don't know if someone has already commented this but, i'm sorry to tell you that what you ate wasn't a "gordita"( a thick tortilla which is filled with pressed pork meats, that is called "chicharron prensado", it is a different thing to that of chicharron which is pork skin fried with pork lard, 'till crispy and delicious) that was actually a "bistek" taco with a thick, big tortilla, pretty tasty, the "gordita rellena de bistek" is the one which appears being made at the same time of your taco, just to the right side in the grill scene... Also, your friend forgot, or didn't know about the most interesting facts about castillo de Chapultepec, i suggest you google it, its a very long story jaja

@2:03 fun fact: the Zócalo plaza used to be laid out much like the plaza of all Mexican towns with gardens and everything. Curiously it never had a Quisco in the middle. However this was dismantled after the revolution and was left as a plain open area for events. The name zocalo means base, and it refers to the base of a statue of the Spanish king that used to be in the plaza. After independence the statue was knocked down and only the base (zócalo) of the statue remained for many years. Eventually people just started referring to the entire plaza as "El Zócalo."

Hi there - I agree with Maddie - traffic is soooo bad - its takes less time to walk than drive - also remember - on any given day only half the cars are allowed into the city depending on the license plate numbers- this helps curb traffic congestion - first time I saw the traffic I remember thinking it's as bad as LA & the drivers reminded me of New York City in terms of their aggressive driveling maneuvers - BUT still gotta love the city - it's AMAZING

I am glad you went to Mexico City. You are correct that Mexico’s capital is built on top of another city. It was built on top of the Aztec capital. What you might not know is that Mexico City used to be mostly a lake and many buildings are sinking and that is why they are sinking. Castillo de Chapultepec was Maximillian’s castle. He was the first (and only) emperor of Mexico. It is also where the United States invaded Mexico and where the ninos heroes died. El Camino Real was built in the 60s to help host dignitaries for the 1968 olympics. Gorditas by the way are not from Mexico City, they are from Guadalajara, but there is lots of other food that is chilango like tortas(al cubano is my favorite), tacos al pastor, and chilaquiles.

Zocalo was built on top of the ruins in an effort to cover up and replace the pagan religion of the natives with Catholicism. Glad you got to see the Castillo! Awesome video. Hi. I'm very glad you're finally here in Mexico City. Templo Mayor has some degree of restoration to preserve the structures and original colors, but no reconstruction at all. It was "discovered" in 1978, and back then it was decided to preserve the archeological ruin conditions.

CHAPULTEPEC CASTLE: It is the only royal castle in the Americas. It was built at the time of the Viceroyalty as summer house for the viceroy. It was given various uses, from the gunpowder warehouse to the military academy in 1841. It became the official residence of Emperor Maximilian I and his consort Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire (1864-1867). The temple is rising and have risen quite a few feet over 40 years since it was unearthed. I had an amazing tour guide that told me about the history of Templo Mayor. It is mostly original and not earthquake damaged. I believe there are 7 layers . You need to educate the audience of the incredible destruction the Conquistadors had on indigenous civilization. Colonialism as it is otherwise known. The conquistadors destroyed Templo Mayor. They used the stones to build the cathedral next door. That was a common practice of the conquistadors form of colonialism in Mexico to build Cathedrals from the ruins of the temples that they had destroyed.

Tangerine Travels and it’s super delicious! They use potato flour as a base and it’s all organic :) I have tons on GF tips in Mexico City and Cancún (where I’m from) if you ever need them. If you come back to CDMX 100% try and stay in Rom/Condesa❤️❤️❤️

I was glad to see that you visited the Templo Mayor, but it is must to go to the National Palace to see the murals of Diego Rivera or visit the Colegio de San Idelfonso to see the murals of José Clemente Orozco. You must visit San Ángel, to see the house of Diego and Frida, as well as the mummies of the Convent of Carmen

Camino Real: Designed by Architect Ricardo Legorreta. All his buildings to me are the most beautiful in Mexico. His work basically became a stamp of Mexican style architecture in the 20th century (only following and expanding on Luis Barragan work which defined the style). That hotel was inaugurated for the Olympic Games in 1968. Even the furniture has been kept as it was designed and the rooms are beautiful too. When you come back you should visit the National Center for the Arts (CN or Centro Nacional de las Artes) which he designed too. I feel I'm in a parallel universe when I visit his work.
