With a Rs 9.9 lakh ex-showroom price (without battery), a unique ‘rental’ plan for the battery and buyback, warranty and service programs, the new MG Windsor EV makes for a tempting pic, solely from a financial standpoint. But what is the core product like? Nikhil Bhatia gives you an introduction.

The Battery As A Service (BAAS) model isn't as exciting as it sounds. The ₹3.5 per km BAAS cost + charging cost will bring the running cost close to a very efficient hybrid petrol car. Also what was not mentioned in this video is that the customer must pay for at least 1,500 kms per month under BAAS model, bringing the usage cost of the battery to ₹5,250 per month even if the user drives it for less than 1,500 km. So it is not really suitable even for those who don't drive much.

@@TrackandshieldWait till Tata launches an even cheaper battery subscription plan for those who prefer that. 😁 The only reason this car looks attractive to a buyer is the pricing due to the battery subscription model. If Indian buyers warm up to this new pricing model, you can expect Tata and Mahindra to switch to it as well (or atleast provide that as an option). But its a big IF for now. Considering the scale of their investment and efforts, Tata is anyways in this game for the long haul. They aren't going to let the Chinese brands take over the EV industry in India as in the case of smartphones (nor would the government want that to happen). This isn't like the smartphone or electronic industry where India has almost zero design or manufacturing capability. Moreover, Tata has the JLR expertise that they can tap on for future development of EVs.

The identically priced Punch offers a compelling alternative to the Windsor, especially since its price doesn't include the battery subscription cost. Calculating battery cost ROI based on mileage is challenging due to range limitations, making the pay-per-kilometer model seem sensible. Although the Windsor is larger, the extra space feels underutilized without an additional row of seats. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) would have allowed for a spacious frunk and offset the luggage space occupied by the third row. Overall, the Windsor seems optimized for financial efficiency rather than driving excitement, making it an accountant's delight but not a car enthusiast's dream.

After spending 10 + lakh rupees customer has to pay 3.5 rupees per KM .. this would never work in india. But outside charging will be free.

Although the design is a big let down and that too big screen can be distracting, I like it because of its space, features and pretty descent power and torque figures too.

Funny how people are trying to segment this into a taxi. No taxi/fleet owner will take on 3.5/km of fixed cost, with charging extra. They will rather take their bet on battery lasting Lakhs of kms for 8+years. Long run will always be cheaper for taxi operators with a battery paid for. It's squarely intended for the non-calculating segment: individual owners. And there too people have started fiercely calculating now. So will be interesting to know how general public reacts to it. My guess is it will not fly, except maybe with those who have rooftop solar to charge it for free.
