I grew up a 49ers fan. Born in '85, and started watching football at 5 or 6 years old. The Cowboys were the team i hated the most, but it wasn't because they were horrible. They were a great team and #88 could burn you in a heartbeat. He was always a playmaker.

@@epm5433 they had a rise to stardom and dominance in 1991 and then becoming champs in 1992. They repeat in 1993 but have a slow start with Emmitt holding out for first two games and they weren't quite as dominant as the year prior. 1994 they started strong, but you could tell the loss of Norton and Jimmy Johnson steering the ship, and injuries hurt them. But, they still had the talent to topple the 49ers, they just weren't as hungry as the year prior and had a horrific 1st half of football in that NFC Championship game. 1995 they started HOT and dominant, but down the road they fell apart. It was pure legends pulling it back together at the end of the year and getting hot in the playoffs that got them their title, but I don't feel they were as good in 1995 as they were in 1994. They should have 4 straight titles, even without Jimmy.

Also, look at the Cowboys drafting when Jimmy left. An example would be 1996-1999, when Jimmy was at Miami. Each team drafted 17 players who would be starters for at least one season, but Jimmy drafted 7 players who would be starters for at least 5 years (dallas with 5), Jimmy drafted 4 players who would make pro bowls (Dallas with 3), Jimmy drafted 4 players who would make all pro teams (dallas with 0), and Jimmy drafted one player who is currently in the HOF (Dallas with zero). How much better would those mid to late 90's Cowboys teams be with an additional 4 all pro players and an additional 2 players good enough to be starters for 5+ years, especially considering how low on supporting talent the Cowboys were by the year 2000? Heck, Jimmy's drafting was good enough in Miami that though he inherited a non-playoff team, he left that team with a roster good enough to continue making the playoffs for several years after he left and who posted winning records in 5 of their next 6 seasons, while at the same time the Cowboys were on their way to missing the playoffs for 5 of the next 6 years and only posting 2 winning records, and both of those winning seasons happening after the Cowboys picked up another proven superbowl winning coach in Bill Parcells, with the team going 15-33 over the previous 3 seasons. Also, in the 4 years he was with Miami, his Dolphins teams won more games than the Cowboys did over that span despite his inheriting a mediocre team vs Dallas coming fresh off their 3rd superbowl won with a team that Jimmy put together for them with his drafts and trades. Oh man, what a missed opportunity for the Cowboys organization when Jerry drove him away!

@@22steve5150 : Wow!! You know your shit! That was an excellent recap. You really broke it down nicely with the draft picks, as well as the contrasting records of Dallas, and Miami. Had Jimmy remained, I believe the Cowboys would have definitely won one more SB - maybe two. Also, with Jimmy's draft wizardry, the 'Boys would have remained relevant well into the 2000s. At least, that's what I think.

The Cowboy's dominance over a 4 year period has no equal in NFL history. The Patriots are the only other team to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, but they didn't even make the playoffs the year (e.g., 2002) they didn't win the Super Bowl. From 1992-1995, the Cowboys were 49-15 in the regular season, 10-1 in the playoffs, and all 10 of their post-season wins were by double-digits. In all 11 of their post-season games, they scored 27 or more points, and averaged 32.6 points a game. The Cowboys went to 4 consecutive conference title games and won 3 Super Bowls with a point differential of plus 62. The Patriots point differential in their 3 Super Bowl wins in 4 years was a plus 9. This was a magical run by a team with the greatest triplets of all-time, the fastest and deepest defense ever assembled, and the best offensive line in league history.

I hate both teams but you’re missing a big variable. Free agency and the salary cap was still in its infancy during the cowboy run. Cowboys did a fantastic job building talent but didn’t have to worry as much about losing it or replacing it. Sure they were a more dominant team but I think the patriots ability to even have a dynasty was more impressive.

Ohhh, it is SO good to hear Michael being SO smart! Of course he's gotta' go with Troy. It takes a lot of brains, physical ability, mental toughness and stamina to be a great quarterback and Troy had all of those qualities. I remember one of their playoff games during their Super Bowl run that Troy suffered a very serious concussion but shook it off, won the next NFC championship game against the 49ers, in which Jimmy predicted, "we will WIN the football game!" And then on to the Super Bowl and another win. Jay Novacek was also a very critical part of that team that often saved the day. And Michael's right, Jerry really screwed up big time by letting Jimmy go. And I'm glad that Barry got one of the wins even though everyone knew if "was Jimmy's team." No telling how many they would have won?

They had so many tools during the early and mid 90s. Youd have Emmitt break open a couple of runs for td's early on, then a long pass to irvin for 30, then a bomb to Alvin Harper for like 40 and a score. Offense would cool in the third quarter, defense would hold. Emmitt would run 2 straight plays for like 2 yards of nothing, then 8 would hit 88 with a 12 yard slant for a 1st down and re energize the offense, then a score to Novacek. Was like clockwork

What made Jimmy so great is that he would let players loose when it came to off the field, but once you stepped into Valley Ranch, your play had better not suffered. So you could party, but as long as you performed on the field Jimmy would let that slide. The thing was with Michael Irvin the partying and drugs finally ate him alive. Without Jimmy as head coach, therewas no DISCIPLINE. The Cowboys in the 94 and 95 seasons relied on talent alone to get them to the NFC Championship in 94 and Super Bowl in 95. I can tell you one thing, if Jimmy was coach in 94, the Cowboys don't go down 21-0 in after 3 possessions if he was head coach.

@@quentinmyles4731 That's fine. But curses don't work this way where you win a whole other championship almost immediately after. The curse of Doug Flutie over the Bills made sense because it took them 17 years to make the playoffs again after benching him. The curse of the Bambino was another one. Those curses signify a lack of success. The Cowboys not only won a Super Bowl after Jimmy, they remained contenders for years after. There is no Jimmy Johnson curse. Never existed.

Jimmy Johnson was a good coach for the Cowboys, Jerry Jones was a football business man and he figured that he would win more super bowls without jimmy Johnson or find 500 other coach's that was better. Only reason Jerry fired him is because he had an ego that got way out of hand. After he fired Jimmy, the team drafted players that Jerry never bothered to listen to the outside sources

blachloch1 I don't think the 49ers beat them at all. SF got confidence getting Deion and even in the 94 conference championship Dallas self destructed early in the game. I just don't see anybody beating a Jimmy Johnson led cowboys team. 92-96 they win 5 in a row in my opinion. Jimmy also had the respect of all players on the team. Nobody really respected Switzer they just tolerated him.

5 is not an exaggeration. They won 2 and when Deion arrived, they got another but with Barry Switzer as the coach. But with Jimmy Johnson, it's quite possible they could have upgraded at a few positions and won another ring or two in the late 90's. However, they likely would have had to get another quarterback because Aikman was a bit fried by the late 90's.

Troy wasnt really fried ... he didnt have the players around him...... Billy davis at wide reciever???? kevin williams your #1?????? then they trade away TWO NUMBER 1 draft picks for Joey Galloway who tears his ACL in first game never gaining more than a thousand yards with the cowboys in the next three seasons... and take a look at their pathetic drafts from 95 -99 horrific !!!! also the o line was getting long in the tooth by 97-98 .. other than Larry Allen that is ... Haley gone novacek gone.. Irvin gone and the coaching for that matter ... Barry was shot after 95 and Chan gaily for two years 98 -99 .... Aikman needed to have structure and there wasn't any ...

I became an avid Cowboys fan in 1967. Jerry Jerkoff and his Jupiter-sized ego ended it when he fired Jimmy Johnson at the end of March, 1994, right after Johnson had just led the Cowboys to a 2nd consecutive Super Bowl title, and yet, that egomaniac is in the Hall Of Fame. Geez Louise, Larry Cole deserves to be in Hall Of Fame more than Jerry does.

Jimmy Jones was the salvation of the Dallas Cowboys because when he took over in the first year Dallas couldn't win 5 games. Landry had destroyed the team by that time and Jimmy salvaged the Dallas Cowboys in just two years. Yes Dallas could very have one 5 SB's because Jimmy had them operating like a machine. He recruited miraculously. I watched the whole decade.

When Montana went down the entire league had a chance to win.But the Cowboys first Super Bowl they played the Niners in the Championship game.Ninets were up by 10 at halftime. No way Montana would have given up that 10 points lead. And the 94 team with Young would have won anyway.

If Jimmy Johnson would've stayed, Dallas wouldve won a SuperBowl in '94 cuz Erik Williams wouldve kept his butt home and wouldnt have gotten hurt in a car wreck and he wouldve played in NFC championship game against the 49ers. And Johnson wouldve kept the high standards of Cowboys to have them keep winning. But Jerry Jones couldnt live with the fact that he wasnt getting all the glory.

They missed in 94, but there is no guarantee Jimmy would have won. Free Agency was destroying the team not Switzerland. Heading into 1994 they already lost a ton of good players. Casillas, J Jones, Norton Jr, Everett, Gogan, Gesek, Jeffcoat were gone in 1994, after 1994, Harper. L Brown, D Edwards, G Myles, D Smith, R Maryland, B Marion, M Stepnowski, R Jones, then K Smith got hurt, J Novacek and C Haley retired.

Fan of both QB's. Young had Montana's team for the most part, but still an all-time great QB - had Rice and added Terrell Owens - no QB can do it by themselves, but they do need to have talent themselves and leadership qualities. Besides the successes, the thing that defined Montana to me - a LONG time Bills fan, was a huddle with the offense just as the drive started that ended with "The Catch". One of the OL, I forget who it was, said in a documentary that of course, everyone was nervous as this drive would decide that play-off game one way or the other. Montana came into the huddle and said - "Her, did you guts see who was sitting in the front row over there? John Candy (RIP). Showed calm and cool attitude under immense pressure, got his team to relax, and the rest is history.

That would have been true, but what Jimmy brought to the team was that discipline in practice but he also let players loose during the off season which the demons finally ate up Michael Irvin with those drug arrests. All I can say is that the Cowboys would not have been down 21-0 in the first quarter after 3 drives in the 1994 NFC Championship if Jimmy was the coach and not Barry.
