Just spend the last two days consuming Showalter, not really even intentionally. I went back and watched Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp since season two is coming out in a week or so, and then I went and saw The Big Sick. He did a great job on both.

I always felt like The Baxter would've been a huge comedy-hit if Paul Rudd played Elliot Sherman, & Michael Showalter played Dan Abbott. The characters were eclectic, the genre & premise were playfully subverted, & it was like an Apatow production in its sincerity. But even though Showalter's a kickass writer & director, I was distracted by his performance played against his ridiculously amazing cast (Elizabeth Banks, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Williams, & Justin Theroux, to name a mere few).

I agree with this take completely. But its quirky flaws are I love it so much for being what it is. Especially since Showalter was awkward the entire film and then crushed the very last scene with Michelle singing us out. Its in my top 10 most romantic moments in film.
