You can tell Cate really expected Michelle to win by how surprised she was to win Best Actress in the Critics Choice and BAFTA awards. I'm pretty sure she also wishes Michelle to win, since Cate already won several Oscars, and she will get more nominations, since she is so talented, and landing good Oscar roles will be easier on a white woman than an Asian woman. I too wish Michelle to win, but by no means this undermines Cate's performance in Tar.

You really should not think that Michelle should win because she is an Asian woman and that may be her only shot at the Oscars and that Cate Blanchett shouldn't win because she has already won twice. Almost everybody seems to think about the race that way and that's terrible, that's ideology. Michelle's role was technically demanding and she showcased her craft, but Blanchett's performance was one of the most transformative performance mentally, not only technically, I've seen in decades honestly. She had to play a person with differrent sexual orientation which is never easy and she did a better job than in "Carol", I can tell you that, she had to play a deeply flawed mad artistic genius, and it's impossible without being an artistic genius herself, and she plays musical instruments and speaks German as a bonus. That would be her most deserving Oscar really, that potential third one. You don't recognize Cate Blanchett on screen in "Tar"...

I have not seen either of the films yet but as a Hong konger who grew up in Hong Kong watching Michelle’s movies as a kid, and saw how she made the seemingly impossible great divide to Hollywood and transformed herself from mostly an action star to a multi-layered actress, I sincerely hope she will win the Oscar. I hope the fact that Cate having won the best actress for Blue Jasmine a few years ago would help Michelle’s course. I know that isn’t exactly fair but well let’s see…

at this point it seems that Michelle Yeoh has bigger chances to win an Oscar, but history knows the upsets, so Cate's name is still in the game for sure. I personally think it should go to Yeoh, because in this day and age, with so little roles and opportunities for Asians in Hollywood, she has manage to be one of the best in her lane, and this role is not only very challenging and multilayered, but is this kind of amalgamation of all her previous roles, combining elements of glamour and action. Some people might say Blanchett was better in Tar (which I personally am on the fence with that, because art IS very subjective and one can't really say how and on what merit which is better than the other), plus she has a career behind her (considered as one of the best, some might see her nom for Carol as a consolation or extension of her loss for Brie Larson, I believe), but to be frank, she will have much better chances to get another project that is Oscar-worthy then Yeoh might have, and awards mean something. It could signal the shift and stir up the conversation about bringing down barriers for Asian actors in Hollywood (which are still many, EEOAO is a one movie that can bring them down, but time really will tell if some other projects will come through). However, the story with Riseborough's nom is an example that Hollywood still can get biased and ignore actors and roles of POC's in favor of their white counterparts. So to sum up, the race is nail-biting this year.

The best acting award is not merely going to those who have inner acting or deeper role, but also to whom can deliver to message deep into the audience's heart. I think Michelle's role won in this part and countless audiences now have a different perspective to see their life. This is a more valuable achievement that a movie can be, and also Michelle is the only woman that can be in Evelyn's role, thanks to her previous hard work of numbers roles. I can say that, the script does help Michelle's role as Evelyn, also Michelle made this role more convincing than anyone else can.

Most "rivalries" are manufactured simply because it's just good for business. Unless people are actually killing each other, like Biggie-Tupac, it's not a real rivalry. It's only a rivalry for the cameras. The wrestlers on the WWE have rivalries one week, then the next week, they're tag-team partners. In the 90's, there was this "rivalry" between The Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. But in reality, they were both equally being ripped off by Lou Pearlman, who created the rivalry. Sports rivalries are the exact same. You sell more tickets playing against your rival. Lil Romeo years after his "rivalry" with Lil Bow Wow eventually came clean and said that his record label made him be rivals with Bow Wow, and that they never had any beef with each other.

Let's not ignore that Michelle Yeoh is only winning for diversity purposes. Yes, she delivered an amazing performance in her film, but it's only second best. Cate Blanchett delivered a groundbreaking bravura performance that will be studied in the academies of film for years to come. There is little subjectivity to how amazing she did her role in Tar. Only fools would disagree. Now the fools show up to disagree. I personally like Yeoh to win an Oscar someday, but only when she will be the best that year. This year is not it.

@@slin2678 Evelyn Wang is not a unique character. Any good Chinese actor can play that role. Jackie Chan was literally the first choice for that role. The acting skills required for that role are not unique either. Change the character to any immigrant nationality and it would still be good. If it's about the Nigerian experience, then Lupita Nyong'o would be amazing in it. Lydia Tar is created only for Cate Blanchett and arguably nobody but she could do that role justice. It's all about the subtlety and becoming the character.
