But so did Netscape back then. Web dev in the late 1990's meant testing and coding against every browser on the market. The times of CSS 1 were the first phase when there was alignment and back then Opera was the nice player really supporting and aligning with the standards. Unfortunately, these days Apple and Google do the same again, introducing new styling features because standardization moves too slow. The only reason people don't feel it is because the majority use Chrome, or are forced to use WebKit on iOS. The modern bad-boy Google is accepted by most. They have done a great job painting themselves as everybody's friend when in fact they sell you out. And no Apple fan boy would criticize them (even if there is lots of stuff WebKit does not support or do differently). Too few use neutral FireFox.

@vroomfondel3693 Жыл бұрын
@@rush4you News for you: Devs are still coding hacks to support IE6 (released in 2001). Why? Because websites used by businesses still get significant IE6 traffic. If your work issues you a computer with Windows XP and IE6 and you don't have rights to install a new browser, then you just have to use IE6. Why do businesses insist on still using IE6? Because some crappy internal site(s) the companies use were built to work on IE6 but not actual real web standards (meaning if you tried to visit them in a real browser, they wouldn't work), and the businesses haven't been willing to spend the funding to rewrite those internal sites. So they bleed money by remaining on old OSes, applications, etc that are no longer maintained and supported. Search in sidebar is right below search with google, and would've been a nice feature for when you don't want to open a new tab, but sadly it uses bing. searching using google in a sidebar is clearly supported, since that's what search in sidebar does when you searched with bing in the the first place.

Being open source or not being chromium-based means nothing to about 80% of casual internet users. What matters is how browser looks and what unique functions it has. And look is subjective. Back in 2010 when I first had internet access, my browser was Opera. It looked cool, was a cutting-edge technology of the time and fulfilled all of my needs. But couple of years later, after Opera 12 changed to Opera 15, I started looking for a new browser. In the early 2013 I tried a lot of different browsers - Apple Safari, Comodo Dragon, Avant Browser, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and about a dozen others, none of them was my cup of tea as Opera was before (and Mozilla Firefox looked the worst for my taste, it was a slightly tidied Internet Explorer). It was a happy occasion that in the late 2012 russian company Yandex started developed their browser on Chromium engine, and I was pleasantly surprised with how Yandex Browser looks and what it could do. It was more than ten years since then, and I'm still a devoted Yandex Browser user. The only thing that probably could force me to switch browser again is a looming danger of Manifest V3 making Ad Blockers unusable on Chromium based browsers, but I hope it will not happen.

Firefox is great. I have nothing against it. Just keep on using it. But to be fair, Chromium is Open Source as well. That is the biggest part of Chrome. And the reason MS could just build the new Edge on Chromium without Google's permission. Chrome is mostly just the little closed source part that is build on top of Chromium. And while Google is the major force driving the Chromium open source project, there is still many smaller browsers our there that is based on Chromium, and that are fully Open Source, unlike Chrome.
@axeldewater9491 Жыл бұрын
@@AndreasRugtvedNeumann yes, I know that, but Alphabet still greatly influences Chromium in such a way that it starts controlling the market. Firefox is the only browser that does not depend on Alphabet whatsoever software wise, only dependency Firefox has on Alphabet is the money they get from having Google as the default search engine. Diversity in the browser market when it comes to software is very important because otherwise big companies such as Alphabet are going to control the internet. So yes, Chromium is open source but still under control of whatever Alphabet wants to do with it, so it's not the most "free" open source that you can get.

I think the makers of the browser Opera handled their engine change better, although I'm not sure how many uses this browser these days. I think personally we're in for a bit of fragmentation in the market, as there are options in the market with some advertising privacy features for example. Current profile switching method means you have to load up a potentially unwanted profile first in order to get to the one you want, or have an icon for each profile which is cluttered, although less clicks to load the one you want but it has to be manually setup and I prefer a visual of all available profiles. Profile selecting via the right click context menu for default pinned icon would work too.

I'm hoping that Microsoft using Chromium will help push back on some of Google's awful decisions in the project. Though some I'm not sure if that will happen when those decisions might benefit them as well. For example, a few years back (before Edge was Chromium based), Google decided to change the way certain scroll event handlers work by default, purposefully ignoring the web standards for how this feature worked. This broke tons of websites. Their reason? It made some of the most popular websites faster which were coded wrong. Yup, some major sites were lagging because of using scroll handlers wrong, so they broke sites that were doing it right in order to make their browser faster than the competition. It was a relatively easy fix... once you tracked down that this change was behind it. But it still required updating code, which was an issue for projects using libraries that didn't update quickly. Or our company, which had clients running our code on their own systems. Clients were angry that we had broken our code, even though we had no access to their systems 🙃 .

I made the switch to Edge not long after the adopted Chromium and it felt just a little more flexible and advanced than Chrome. Honestly feels more suitable for power users - and I’m a web developer, so, if I can do my job every day on it, it’s probably good enough for everyone. Use it on Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android regularly. The only hurdle was being required to make new MS Live accounts for my two extra Google accounts to support the same extra profiles.

I don't like it because Microsoft is just too lazy to have a clean ui. All their software always looks messy. And inconsistent, they have so much settings but you can't even disable the bottom bar on mobile version. Makes sense since they like to hoard old stuff in Windows too. Even simple icons, every version of it are still in the files

For me Edge is the sweet spot: I love Opera's sidebar, but Opera has compatibility issues. I love Firefox's privacy and security, but FF's UI isn't that great, also not the fastest. I love Chrome's UI and Speed, but Chrome has privacy issues and is not very efficient. Microsoft Edge provides all of the above and more. Great UI, Privacy, Security, Compatibility, Fast, Efficient, vertical tabs, grouping tabs, Sleeping tabs, and recently the sidebar, it's just a more complete browser in my opinion. And the easy integration with Chrome webstore makes it super easy to switch over. The only reason it hasn't gained its former glory is probably due to inertia or just people's ignorance. Also, the new integration with open AI may just be the final nail to Chrome's coffin IF they do it right. The only feature I miss from Chrome is the reading list.

It's really quite simple: Android. People who own iPhones have macbooks/ipads/etc. and use safari. It really makes no sense to use any other browser if you own 2+ iOS devices. If you own just one, then maybe you consider using a different browser, but that most likely will be chrome, since they have several years of positive browser experience since the XP days. If you own an android, then chrome is the obvious choice. Edge on android works great, however, it's not as well integrated into android's backbone services (password manager, files, etc.), and like many people, they value a cohesive UI experience as well. Since most people these days use their mobile devices as their primary means of interfacing with the internet, it only makes sense that they use chrome as the native browser on windows too.

@InsidiousWeenie4 ай бұрын
@@unemployicus I said "if you own 2+ iOS devices" as a qualifier. I specifically said that because of vertical browser integration, which isn't a big deal if you have mixed devices. There's also many reasons not to use edge, and I can name 5 off the top of my head: 1) Principle - forced integration into windows and search functions. 2) Goofy Loading - 3rd party cookies don't always work in the mobile browser. Chrome does. 3) Inconsistency - desktop mode on mobile browser does not actually get you the same desktop mode you'd get in Windows. Chrome and safari do. 4) Principle - It's Microsoft, and some people may find that inherently a problem 5) Overcrowded - It's starting to look like an AOL load up screen with the 30 different visual sections you go through, and is not nearly as streamlined as safari, chrome, or Firefox for that matter.
