Be careful, you're in danger of realizing that gliding is, by far, the most enjoyable form of flight.

A few tips: To do a low flyby (don't touch) fly downwind and try to hold it just below VNE, start dropping ballast as you approach the runway, then fly back up pretty aggressively to your best sink speed and circle back to land. Learn your speeds, there is a speed to fly for the best glide distance and one for the slowest sink (for thermalling) in each glider. The water ballast is stored in the wings which are extremely long compared to the other airplanes. In flight this weight is supported by the lift all along the wing, after landing there is no lift so the weight will apply an incredible torque force on the fuselage mounting points. The yaw string will point at the foot you need to step with in order to fly coordinated. Map your spoilers (you called them air brakes) to your throttle control. Then it's pull back to go down and push forward to stop going down, very similar to a powered plane.

Brilliant! Don't be afraid to keep that thing on its wing-tip when spiraling in a thermal. Welcome to soaring.

What a launch! Absolutely beautiful flying! You're getting it! I adore your videos and dedication to every aircraft you fly. But great launch! Steep, smooth, all the way to automatic disconnect. Also, gliders normally don't do touch and goes. Normally you launch as high as possible, gain some altitude via thermals or ridge and head out to your next waypoint when you feel comfortable. One launch, one landing, is all you need to have a good time! Once you get to your final destination, you can indeed do some low flybys and show off a little bit before landing. Don't be afraid of placing your speed in the "Yellow" and having some maneuvering fun! This glider is a blast with racing as well! Glad you're having fun! This flight was indeed much better hahaha

That's not a landscape from Sim 2020. Or the pilot's computer is too weak to display the area correctly

Personally the "thermals" implemented currently are wayyy to frequent and wide but good to see they are working on it

This is why you are my defacto MSFS content creator. You're knowledgeable and relatable. And then there's videos like this, where not only are you correcting issues using tips from your audience, but also you don't edit out the "oh, the gear is still down" moments. Your videos are always helpful, fun, and honest. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks for another great video! Awesome flying, soon you'll be flying cross country in this thing. If you click to show the map instead of the winch control you can click a button to show all the thermals you've already flown over. You can then circle those thermals or fly over ridges to raise your altitude and continue flying.

Had an eye on this for a while, saw your last video which put me on the edge of getting it and with this video I now have a glider, you sir a a bad influence. :p Parents told me about how they used to go gliding back in the 70's so I am quite keen to try this out, so peaceful.

Water ballast is routinely dumped before landing to reduce the weight of the glider. Dumping ballast: Decreases stall speed. Decreases the optimum airspeed for the landing approach. Shortens landing roll. Reduces the load that glider structures must support during landing and rollout.

Great stuff - you're definitely getting the hang of it! Isn't winch-launching fun? Definitely try some cross-country flights - it's a very different experience when you don't have a safe airfield right under you. I did a couple of hours ridge soaring around Scotland today - maybe a 60 mile circle - and just managed to make it back to the same field I launched from. It can be nail-biting stuff when you run out of lift and the altimeter won't stop unwinding. You have to keep a constant lookout for decent fields to land in - preferably near a pub. There's no second chances if you screw up, and you really need to learn to read the wind and manage your energy budget well. Tucson to PHX might be asking a lot, but you could winch out of Sedona and see if you can get to Cottonwood or Rimrock, or maybe even Prescott, following the ridges? No pubs here in AZ, though...

Great video Overkill. If you get a chance check out Harris Hill NY 4NY8. It is exclusively a glider airport and they have a national soaring museum there. Just thought you would like to try it.

Hey, for real for real your should go find your closest glider operation and take a discovery flight. The SAA (Soaring Society of America) even offers a FAST program to get affordable first flights to anyone looking for the experience! Gliding is an affordable way to become the BEST kind of pilot (situationally aware, and incredible energy management). The advantage of flying real gliders is you can turn off the vario beeping (variometer is what we call the vsi bc its actually a different system that uses pitot, static ports, and a total energy probe) and just feel if you in lift or sink via your BUTT!

I'm developing a glider using modern fm and am curious about one set of values (only 1?!). May I ask why you include legacy values in your flightmodel.xlm where you state modern_fm_only =1
@tibetanbowl72552 жыл бұрын
with water balast in you have better penetration into the wind etc, dump the water and you are more able to float longer, landing with water can damage the air frame too much weight... cross country leave the water in as you can get further

Ah that makes sense!

I'm very interested in this. However I'm on Xbox. I understand some functionality is not yet available. Tow plane etc, but can anyone confirm if there would there be any differences in actual flying?

The problem with Brandon Yaeger who developed SOME of what you see here is that he uses unauthorized content which he hasn't gotten permission to use from the content creator. He then claims not to have done so and accuses those he took from of lying. If you really look closely at the instruments, systems and textures they are mostly taken from the DG-808S by Touching Cloud and those that poured their heart sweat and tears into it.

ok, nobody does touch-and-go's in gliders. You have no method to accelerate afterwards; you were hoping to use the unique Sedona geography to be able to pop off the ground gain "altitude", with potential to then find lift, but ordinarily that would be at an unsafe altitude and you'd be forced to land off-airport. Having said that, there's no reason you couldn't do a high speed pass over the strip, then zoom skywards and fly a normal circuit. Reason for dropping ballast - you are basically in a thin fibreglass tube, and it's optimised for light weight and not strength, so dropping ballast means you don't land with the potential for extra forces on the plane that will lead to tail booms breaking or other structural damage. With ballast the flight envelope is much different to that of empty, so a more vigorous landing empty will not affect the airframe. Having ballast in the first place is all about wing loading, allowing you to fly faster on days with stronger lift, and once you decrease the loading you can fly slower at the same sink rate, and you will climb in weaker lift.
@dongallagher77562 жыл бұрын
Spoilers are used to control rate of decent. Think of it as a kind of throttle used when flying with a propeller. More spoiler, more sink. Less spoiler, less sink.

Don't think touch n go is a normal part of sailplanes. We're you using live weather? I was using their soaring presets and didn't get the lift u did.
@erim842 жыл бұрын
The best preset if you want lift is the "cross country" one, you then fly between clouds and use the thermals below the cloud to gain altitude. You can also fly over ridges, and those create lift regardless of weather preset (assuming there's wind).

Ballast let's the glider move through the air faster. More momentum. Really need in slope soaring. Landing speed too high with ballast. BTW, gliders don't do touch and go's
