If you enjoy flying around the Alps (and mountainous areas in general), make sure to grab the freeware 'Project Lifts'. It adds ski lifts globally in the correct locations. Makes it a lot nicer to fly in the mountains. Pick up 'Powerlines and Solar panels' as well. Additionally; there are already thermals in the base sim with live weather. It's not perfect yet (they're generally pretty small in size), but I've done some 2 to 2.5 hour flights in the Discus on live weather recently.

Beautiful video, and MSFS does indeed capture the Alps quite nicely! I often re-trace my hikes and bike tours in the area in MSFS, using a small taildragger or a helicopter, and I can find most of the tracks visually. I have not spent much gliding in the sim yet, but I always find it a pretty amazing experience.

I absolutely love the Got Friends glider. This Discus 2 is actually also a great "touring" glider with a fairly decent glide rate. I'd been using it in the Himalayas, and the combination of extreme altitude and wild updrafts mean you can get a LONG way with this. Although the MSFS weather convection system is currently a work in progress, you really can find life if you know where to look. Thermals do exist in the sim currently, they are just not realistically behaved in that they are smaller, less powerful, and less stable than they should be, and you can't spot them with clouds so they are hard to find. On the other hand, ridge lift and mountain wave effects, and convection over wooded areas are all pretty well simulated, and you can really feel the terrain under you in this glider. I had been using the freeware version, and was looking forward to buying the payware, but I'm headed out for a major fieldwork expedition, so I will not be flying in the sim for quite some time. Still glad to see it develop through your videos and reviews!
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Austin. I haven’t really been keeping up to date with where the sim is at, in terms of this sort of thing. Great to hear that Asobo are already quite far along with where they need to be. The MSFS environmental modelling is already a cut above the competition, so it’ll be great to see it refined further. Best of luck with the fieldwork! Hope you have fun : )

If powered flight is like this amazing human experience then gliding like this is probably the most serene way to experience flight possible. No engine noise, no thrust, just you and the air. Closest to being a bird probably! Short of flapping the wings.
@TheOneTrueSpLiT2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how it is - I used to fly ASK-21s from West Malling airfield in Kent, UK in the early/mid-'80s while in the ATC, we would initially get a winch to get us up in the air and then proceed over industrial parks around Maidstone to grab some thermals that would get us up and over Blue Bell Hill where we would then proceed to the huge car park of GEC Avionics to get some altitude and then fly all over Kent in peace and tranquillity for hours and hours. Gliding is a sublime and fantastic experience that I recommend anyone interested in flying give a go if possible, you won't regret it.
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a dream Guy! My gliding experiences were never blessed with quite as much lift as yours haha. We'd usually wallow around the local area looking for some mediocre thermals, before heading home again XD Still enjoyed every second of it though and luckily our launches were all aerotow, so you could pick and choose how much sky you wanted to fall slowly out of : P All the best! : )

I've got the premium version as I couldn't resist it: a bargain if you ask me. A glider that works in MSFS at last. I've just completed a cross Scotland run down the Caledonian Canal route from Inverness to North Connel using thermals and ridge lift and it actually works! The weather presets seem to work well and can only get better as Asobo integrate gliding into the sim. Highly recommended by me if gliding appeals to anyone. @IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah, that sounds about right Robi XD If you’re using Kinetic Assistant, the default tow aircraft will just fly a set profile and that can indeed lead to some interesting situations. It is possible to record your own profiles though (you fly them yourself ahead of time) and that way you can be towed in exactly the manner you would like, accounting for the local terrain etc (which is what I did here). I hope that helps a little. Cheers and all the best! : )

Nice video! I love the Discus! One recommendation is to assign the spoilers to the speed brake axis. On approach to landing I find it a good technique to put out half spoilers with the aim to land without having to touch them. You can then use the spoiler lever to fine tune your glide path…as needed.. Too high, add more spoiler, too low, reduce the amount of spoiler. You can fly a very precise descent to the runway this way.
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Paul and thanks for the pointer! I ordinarily don’t bother assigning my spoilers to an axis (I don’t have enough hardware axis to do so haha), as I figure if they’re on a button, they’re there if I need them in a hurry and if I need to finesse things I can always click and drag. Your comment did get me thinking though and I suddenly remembered that you can in fact assign the same axis / key press etc to multiple different commands within MSFS. I think I’ll assign my spoilers to the same axis I usually use for prop pitch; other than the Mooney, there shouldn’t be too many aircraft where that causes a conflict haha. Thanks again! : )
@SoaringGuy2 жыл бұрын
Another option for the spoilers is to set up a separate glider control profile for your hardware throttle and assign spoilers to the hardware throttle axis. As Paul says, it’s then used exactly as you would a throttle in a powered aircraft when on approach. Try to set up your approach aiming for half spoilers and then adjust using the good old “string around your shoulders” exactly as you would a powered aircraft. Just don’t try going around 🤣 The only downside to separate control profiles is having to remember to select them but it soon becomes second nature. And can always be done in flight anyway.

Awesome flight and video! The Discus is pretty awesome, those Got Friends chaps are putting out some quite good stuff for decent prices. Really looking forward to their Wilga they have in the works. I wasn't really into gliding in the older sims, mostly because outside of dedicated gliding sims its always been a bit meh, but when some decent looking freeware gliders (including the earlier versions of this) started coming out and armed with Kinetic Assistant I decided to give it another go. Had a few problems at first as I don't really know much about gliding but I kept at it and have been having a blast. As others have probably mentioned there are thermals in the base sim and with ridge lift I've managed some pretty decent and long flights in the Premium Discus. Kinetic Assistant also helps a lot as well with its thermal hotspot injection and visualisation for that extra bit of lift. Looking forward to the updates later in the year with the promised improvements to soaring in the game as gliding really is quite nice as you've demonstrated quite admirably in this video. Also you really should look into the controller profile system. Set up a glider profile and assign the speed brake to your throttle. It's a bit annoying the game can't automatically switch profiles with specific planes like you can with X-Plane, I'm always forgetting to do so and have to switch around after I start the flight but that's only a minor nuisance. Cheers.
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Megadyptes, I'm glad you enjoyed it (as did I on this one haha)! I saw Got Friends announced the Wilga, very much looking forward to that one myself also. Likewise I was never a massive gliding fan in older sims, but I think in my case it was the scenery putting me off as much as anything. Always felt a bit pointless to be idling around with nothing to look at haha. MSFS certainly addresses that shortfall! I was quite surprised with just how much implementation there already is in terms of thermals etc. I didn't realise just how much the sim had already come on in that regard and indeed it will be interesting to see how she behaves post SU10. I maaay look into the controller profile thing, but that just sounds like an accident waiting to happen - finish a 20 min recording of me setting up a 737 for departure, only to find out that my engineer has wired my throttle cables to my speeedbrake lever XD Cheers! : )
@Vigulfr2 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheBlueSimulations yeah I've had a few incidents when it comes to profiles but usually nothing too bad, it'll be something like 'why on earth can't I lean my mixture' when I forgot to switch from my twin jet or glider profiles. Great video. I'm not a pilot.....yet, but had an acrobatic flioght experience in a glider flight near Lake Taupo in NZ many years ago and this brought that experience back. We got towed up to 10000 ft on that flight, but i took over the controls to gain some Ridge lift at one point. Very special experience. I am now thinking about getting the PPL. Do you think being in your early 50's and still wanting to make that jump to becoming a light aircraft pilot is realistic?
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much MC, glad you enjoyed it (you can probably tell that I enjoyed making this one haha)! Wow. Well of all the flying experiences to have, I’ll bet that ranks right up there! Gliding is a very special experience, the little aerobatics I’ve done in gliders was great fun and judging by the sim, Lake Taupo is an absolutely stunning location. If you have the money, I would 100% say “go for it”! 50 is perfectly young enough to be working towards a PPL - it’s very achievable to have the licence completed within 6 months to 1 year and then you’ll hopefully still have many years or flying ahead of you. Honestly, PPL flying is some of the most fun you can have in aviation. As with any sort of flight training, it’s probably worth obtaining a medical first, just to make sure you meet the requirements, before investing heavily in the training itself. If you do choose to pursue it, best of luck and please do let me know how it goes! : )

The gear should stay extended until you disconnect from the tow airplane. You want to have the extra drag which makes towing a lot more stable. Reference speeds and altitudes are in Meters ;) As ALWAYS another great content, thank you so much!
@antonioiozzi2912 жыл бұрын
True. There is no reason to retract the gear of a Djscus before releasing. However in some bigger and heavier gliders like my DG505 it is better to retract the wheel after reaching a safety height . The tow pilot will thank you.
@poolhallshark2 жыл бұрын
Yup. And I dunno about that trim at 108 KNOTS. LOL A bit too low in the tow as well, and maybe should have lifted the glider off the ground earlier to decrease the drag for the towplane. But a great video nevertheless 🙂
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Cheers e36s! I’ve never flown a glider with retractable gear and I figured it would be better for the towing aircraft, if I got rid of the drag. It seems my logic was flawed there though haha. In hindsight, I can see how the drag would help. . . You’ll have to forgive me on the Km/h vs knots etc. I was aware that I was flying in Km/h, but it’s just so alien to me, that my brain always automatically reverts back to knots (same on the altitude). I’m sure after a few more hours in the Discus, I’ll have the hang of things a little better ; ) Thanks very much for the tips! Really glad you enjoyed the video : )

What a nice video. I have very limited experience with real-life gliders (powered airplane pilot here), flew gliders only a couple of times with fiends. The one thing that struck me as wildly unexpected as the massive control of glide path with airbrakes that one can have in these things. Airbrakes out, you have the glide angle not much better than a Piper Cherokee. If you get low on the approach, close the airbrakes and you feel the instant push forward and up (just as if adding power in an airplane), it feels like you'll land in another county. And the thermals. Fly for very long times, without the cost of burning fuel. Gliders are as fun as it gets.

Bought this (and the R3) off of the sale a few days ago and when I first tried it out, I was absolutley amazed. The last time I flew gliders in a flight sim were the Me-163 and Go-229 (Ho IX with engines) in Il-2 '46 and maybe you could count those in the Ultrawings games for VR as well, but their glide rate is atrocious (still better than the other planes', I mean it's just a game and it's actually fun). Before that there's basically just been the Schweizer 232 in the older MSFS versions and I remember having had some sort of mod for it (must be pre 2k2 and pre my IBM IC35 headcrash in 2001 since I don't have the files anymore) that ought to simulate the winch, but all it did was act like a silent rocket engine with unlimited fuel as long as you were staying below a certain altitude :D - but at least with that it was possible to fly that thing without having to use the AC translation thing to put you somewhere in the sky anymore. Waiting for the official gliders and aerodynamics + thermodynamics improvements as well as the helos, but I just had to snag this one for 8,99... what a steal! :) 15:16 I did that twice already :D

The one thing turning me off a bit is the audio-variometer in sailplanes, couldn't they find a less annoying solution over the years? :D Zell am See - Innsbruck is my favourite flight in the game. If you enjoy it, there are very well done airports by Gaya Simulations (LOWZ Zell am See) and ORBX (LOWI Innsbruck), both adding a lot of atmosphere to the scenery (and additional buildings in the vicinity).

Excellent video and you flew at my Homebase :) my dad lives a few km from there in the summer and we just ate there last weekend. Many gliders around and also a nice destination for GAs. Afaik gliding should be natively supported with SU10 ? We are hoping to be able to use tow plane and glider in multiplayer. Same we do with our RC-models towing the glider up and then soaring in FPV. If you can’t fly real anymore this is as close as it gets. Thank for pointing me to the plane gonna look it up.

Thanks Michael! Lucky you, it must be an absolutely stunning place to live! I believe you're correct - gliders should be natively supported alongside SU10. Gliding is already brilliant fun in MSFS as it stands though, so lets hope things can only get better! It's been a long time since I've had involvement with RC planes, but I always used to dream of some sort of VR option haha. It sounds like the technology is finally there and as you say, probably about as close as you can get to the real thing, without actually sitting in the cockpit - must be fun. Happy flying! : )

Bad habit putting the gear up so soon on tow for 2 reasons. 1. It distracts from what you should be doing, staying in position behind the tug (biggest cause of tug upset) and 2. If the rope broke low down you are likely to land in a field with the gear retracted! Additionally, no glider I know has cockpit lighting!
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the pointers Jim. I never flew a glider with a retractable gear; I figured getting rid of the drag would be a sensible move (especially since the tug was struggling for performance), but it seems my logic fell flat on its face haha. I guess the cockpit lighting is perhaps a reasonable concession for the sim - it came in rather handy for the video at any rate ; ) Cheers and all the best : )

I'm really glad you look into Got Friends product, they have one of the best dev teams in MSFS. I was not sure about their glider, as I have zero knowledge about gliders, except they climb in thermals, but I think I will pick premium version, just to support the devs. Just one question, did you try it with live weather? I read something that it's only useable with weather preset, as there are no thermals in live weather(?). Thank you and cheers
@GurtTarctor2 жыл бұрын
Proper soaring in live weather is entirely viable and very fun atm, just have to be in the right place at the right time :) Ridge lift, thermals under cumulus clouds and thermals over dark areas of ground are all currently modelled to a decent extent, and will only be improved in upcoming sim updates.
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Indeed GT; I was actually rather surprised to see / hear just to what extent things have already been modelled in the sim - I hadn't really been keeping up with the progress. Hi Tomas, I'm glad I did as well haha! I tried gliding some time ago in the sim and back then it wasn't great, so it rather put me off. I took a punt on the Discus and I am so glad that I did! A cracking effort and as you say, Got Friends certainly deserve the support. My understanding is that while presets etc are the way to go for a slightly more authentic experience, gliding within the sim is actually perfectly doable using Live Weather (as GurtTarctor alludes to). I was using Live Weather for this flight and as you can see, we did manage to find some lift here and there along the way. I believe GT's summary is a pretty accurate explanation as to the current state of the sim and things should also improve alongside SU10. I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

Usually once the file has been unzipped, it’s not the folder itself that you want to copy across, but the folder contained within it. Eg, “Into the Blue’s Addon Scenery” > “Scenery File” > Content Library, Objects etc. . . You’d want to go into the Addon Scenery folder and then copy the “Scenery File” Into your Community folder. MSFS is crying out for gliders as the scenery is made for them. I use Condor 2 where Wave, Thermal and Ridge lift are all modelled. It lacks the beauty of the MSFS Scenery. Hopefully it will come in the future. The Discus, like all glass ships, is very slippery. Approach speed is critical or you just keep going if too fast. The problem with Brandon Yaeger who developed SOME of what you see here is that he uses unauthorized content which he hasn't gotten permission to use from the content creator. He then claims not to have done so and accuses those he took from of lying. I know it won’t help per se, but I would be more than happy to take the 808S out for a spin at some point, if that’s something that’s of any interest to you (I can’t make a promise on the timeframe though I’m afraid, since I have a lot of irons in the fire currently)? All the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations No need but thanks for the offering. I am done with Touching Cloud and Alex Marko and have no further dealings with them due to the situation discussed above. Been burned once and that's enough.

I wish you people would actually learn something first before trying to tell others. 1) Your airspeed is in KPH 2) The flight model is total junk (not the aircraft, but FS) 3) That vario is completely wrong!! It's showing sink when it should be showing climb while on tow (compensated or not!) 4) Ground handling is totally wrong 5) Handling on tow is wrong 6) They are AIRBRAKES, not "spoilers". The binary on/off operation is also completely wrong. Are you using an XBox controller? 7) Thermals are totally unrealistic in FS2020 (and FS2024) 8) You make a big deal about the ground textures, but absolutely nothing about the sky/clouds/reading the sky to find lift. Comes across as marketing propaganda. FS is total garbage in the area that it should be very good at: THE SKY!!! Screw a few satellite ground textures. Irrelevant for flying gliders! For anyone seriously considering a simulator for gliding, there is only one option: Condor 2. Thank me later.

I think you're conflating "fun" with "realism", PC. At no point, did I state that the addon offers up the most realistic gliding experience, merely that I had a lot of fun with aircraft. For sure, Condor is a much better glider sim however, that wasn't the focus of this review and at any rate, let's be honest, Condor doesn't offer up the sort of simming experience that many MSFS simmers are looking for. I enjoy a whole host of different sims, for different reasons but, there's certainly no harm in relaxing and watching the world (real-world imagery) go by. Again, I'm fairly sure I made it clear during the video, that I wasn't looking to offer up any sort of tutorial, merely to showcase the addon; yes, I made a few errors in terminology etc but, I spend the vast majority of my time flying in knots and using spoilers - my brain just reverted to type. Cheers

Very nice sim tutorial. Generally good narration but your accent is a bit annoying. Words that end with the letter "A" get butchered when replaced with "Er". Americker, Indier, Africker, jeeze man, your mispronouncing some proper nouns, like Austri-er". Ok, just a personal complaint but proper nouns should afford a but more respect. Good program overall I agree. At least you dont say "drawerings" rather than "drawings". Overall, you've sold me on the glider and thats why we're here.

Hi AB, Haha, well I don’t profess to be a language or elocution expert. You aren’t the first person to voice a distaste for the way I talk and fair enough, I don’t consider myself to be much of an orator either. I dare say though, that as with most accents, it’s a question of what one is used to. As you point out, I’m here for the flight simulation / product reviews and I think I do a half-decent job with that ; ) I’m glad you enjoyed the video otherwise. Cheers and all the best.

Is anything actually modeled in the, msfs is so unfinished.

MSFS does still have some way to go Unfound, but as I think this flight hopefully demonstrated (at least to some degree), it is also now possible to have some brilliant experiences in the sim! All the best : )

Hate it when obviously not R/L gliderpilots review and comment on sim gliders - 99% talk bullshite - your glide performance won't increase when you release ballast it will decrease........ plus you have failed to notice the overreading vario,

@@SkyborneVisions Rubbish, learn about Reynold numbers................... in modern airfoils glide ratio improves with ballast - and it helps you not, if you can't reach that next lift........you are correct about ballast if all you want to is float around a minimum sink in weak lift though. Now how any hours do you have in a R/L glider 1000, 2000, 3000. 40000. 5000 hours plus? How any competitions have you flown? At national and international level?

Hi BB, Well I don’t think the video title, thumbnail or indeed anything I said during the video, suggested that you were about to receive expert tutelage in how to fly gliders? As I mentioned during the introduction; I did “a little bit of gliding many years ago” - I don’t think that precludes me from enjoying a spot of virtual gliding though? I’ll agree that it was a poor choice of words / explanation on my part regarding ballast. My understanding; one is basically trading endurance / efficiency in thermals etc, for speed? Having just done a little more reading, I see your point re the Reynolds number and it’s effect on overall range also. Surely then it depends on what one is looking to achieve, in terms of whether ballast “improves” the aircraft’s performance? I’ll readily admit that I have no idea what you’re referring to re the over-reading variometer. I’m always more than happy to learn though, should you wish to offer up the info. If you do indeed have several thousand hours of gliding under your belt and have competed internationally, then that’s impressive, but it’s a shame you are using that knowledge to seemingly chastise others, as opposed to helping people learn / enjoy the hobby etc. All the best

@@IntotheBlueSimulations There you go spouting bullshite again because basically you know sfa about gliding and gliders - you are doing a 'review' for commercial reasons to earn yourself money through KZbin -lets not kid ourselves, that's what this channel is about - the least I would expect is correct knowledge on the subject. As for your stupid comment re: helping people learn, I have introduced thousands of people to the R/L sport and trained in excess of a thousand sailplane pilots. If you had done a proper review and indeed had correct knowledge of gliding you would realise that the vario overreads by a factor of approximately 2 when climbing in lift...........

Was going to wait for gliders to be fully supported for msfs 2020. But you did such a good job with this video I am downloading now, never flown a glider before, what could possibly go wrong! 🫡

Haha, well thanks very much Cjm; I always try and inspire people to try different things in the sim, so I’m glad you felt compelled to give gliding a go! Well worth giving the freeware version a try at any rate. Ha! Well at least you won’t have to worry about destroying your engine. . . : P All the best and happy flying : )
@845SiM2 жыл бұрын
That’s very true about the engine. If you don’t use kinetic assistant do these still work somehow, I know there’s no thermals in the sim yet. Been flying without Kinetic and think iam just getting lift off air flow, tried kinetic assist but it’s a bit clunky and caused a crash to desktop so binned it off for now.
@845SiM2 жыл бұрын
There’s also another glider that comes with a mini jet engine on it.
@IntotheBlueSimulations2 жыл бұрын
Yes, should still work fairly well Cjm. I actually wasn’t using Kinetic Assistant for any thermals etc in this video (just for the aerotow) and still managed to find some ridge lift. Apparently various types of lift are already modelled in the sim and things should be refined further with SU10. For the jet glider, are you referring to the C22J? All the best : )
