When you think of the biggest social media companies in the world, you probably think of KZbin, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Facebook. This isn’t surprising given that these are the most ubiquitous platforms in the world boasting billions of users each, but what if I told you that there was a social media platform that was far more powerful than any of these. What is this secret social media you ask? Well, it’s of course LinkedIn. LinkedIn no doubt has a level of cringe and toxicity due to everyone being hypercompetitive and looking out for themselves, but LinkedIn is also an extremely valuable group of users given that everyone is generally well accomplished and well off. This makes for a highly monetizable user base that generates just under $15 billion every single year. Considering this, it’s no wonder why Microsoft decided to purchase LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in 2016. This video explains the rise of LinkedIn and why LinkedIn may very well be the most powerful social media platform.

Over the years I've been surprised to find almost everything is owned by one of a handful of corporations, many things I long assumed to be "their own thing" Do you know Amazon owns Twitch, IMDB, Goodreads? Or that Meta of Facebook owns Instagram and Whatsapp? Or that the same people that own Reddit own Warner Bros, who also own CNN? Or that essentially every mainstream pornsite is a subsidiary of Mindgeek?

Also every other social media platform is dependent on the new generation - if they decide it's not cool it might mean the death of the platform. With LinkedIn, people will always need jobs so this makes the platform potentially timeless.

Please make an effort to be cognizant of that bias and ignore it. Concerns for data privacy (which affects everyone) aside, LinkedIn can be a personal safety threat as it tells a stalker or spiteful ex where you work. If you lie about the name of your employer or say it's confidential, recruiters/interviewers will reject you at best or blackball you at worst.

Linked is interesting in it has its own ecosystem, no one hits mainstream news off a LinkedIn post lol, but there is social currency within the ecosystem. I think it’s a similar principle that H&M made 198 billion last year while Gucci made 18 (according to Bard). But watching this I think that brand value is also a factor and auxiliary value, like as a corporate employee having a solid LinkedIn profile will help your career. But as a person of influence other platforms will give you what LinkedIn cannot. Flexing about LinkedIn virality outside of LinkedIn is just not as sexy.
