From XP to Win7 you could feel Windows getting better and better, to the point where we had a hard time imagining how they would polish Windows even further. But from Win7 onwards every new iteration came with some sort of new annoyance, to the point where Windows 11 don't even let you change the position of the taskbar! They really are undermining their own product, and I fail to imagine why

I have one pc in my own place with Windows 10, the rest are Windows 7 and Linux Mint and one night table laptop with Windows XP for listening with Winamp on headphones to 40+GB premium curated music I selected from my own collection to be on that tiny Sony VAIO P11Z. At my parents there is one PC with Windows 10 which I used to use for gaming and I bring my laptop with Linux Mint. I let my parents move on to Windows 10 on their respective laptops. If Windows 11 magically turns up on their computers I will probably just try to let them adopt it. I do not want to spend time fighting Microsoft on computers I do not use and which have usage patterns of senior citizens. My parents will (have to) learn the subtle differences if any and live with it. Years ago I came to the conclusion that my life is too short to fight Microsoft, and if keeping WIndows 7 becomes too troublesome I will just go with Linux Mint.

I believe there's a flaw on them relying on telemetry to identify what to improve/strip away on their software. Power users are aware of the telemetry and they deactivate it so Microsoft is stuck with telemetry data which don't cover this particular group and that ends up in Windows (and the rest of MS products) being "dumber and dumber" with each iteration.

Telemetry has use in helping with certain issues, but it should be 100% transparent in what it collects. With FOSS stuff, at least you can see what they say they collect. With proprietary, you're stuck trusting them or assuming what function pinged websites in network traffic are for.

I totally agree, and that's why enthusiasts/super users were wrong to shut telemetries off. I'll even leave my TV satellite receiver on a channel to pad the hits (and blatantly shut it off on undesirable broadcasts). It matters until there's no $ income from the whole effort. One does need to represent themselves.

luckily i am using a 1st Gen cpu and can't update to Windows 11. At some point I will be building a much better machine than i have now and i will be installing Win 10. I know how to keep Microsoft out of my machine with Win 10 and I know what I can and can't do with Win 10. I will never allow Win 11 on my machine.

Yea I don't recommend it. My work PC was upgraded to 11 and while it works(?), That's about all the good I can say about it. Updates usually break something, they changed menus and interfaces to be less intuitive IMO, plus of course all the telemetry, though to be fair 10 has telemetry as well. Overall I'm not the least bit impressed and my home systems are staying with 10 for the time being

I was actually having a conversation with my boss the other day about things like this. We both get the distinct uncanny feeling that tech companies are trying to slowly cut out power users and professional admins from the picture, and take control of the users directly. It's the next logical step with the push to web based/cloud based storage and apps. No on-prem exchange servers, none of that anymore. Papa Microsoft will take care of you. Your IT administrator is a big jerk for keeping control of the Acrobat Pro keys.... wouldn't it be cool if you could just.... subscribe and always have Adobe stuff? I think this is true. Tech giants are trying to make it so only they control and manage the tech. I'd bet that 90% of the world's email flows through Microsoft or Google servers. They don't want end-users or end-companies to have any power. They want a feudal system where they are the lords and everyone else is a serf paying a monthly tithe. I've been in the tech industry 33 years. Never used Windows or Mac OS; only UNIX and then Linux. I've had a great run, but I'm retiring in 2 months time and am very happy to get out of this industry that has become rotten to the core.

I believe they see Windows not just as an operating system but as the entry point for selling people more stuff. The OS comes preloaded with lots of features that are either ads or designed to drive traffic to their websites. It looks like one of those Android phones that come bloated with stuff you never wanted and cannot easily remove.

Since Windows 8 they try to add this "metro" UI style on top of the old Windows UI that we had since Windows 98 and they keep removing (or forgot) to add the old stuff correctly when they do that, there is always missing stuff in the new UI, like you said you always add to do extra steps now to access a thing that was accessible in like 3 clicks before.

On top is not the right word here, they tried to add it into the same space as the old one. It replaces less than half of the old settings menu. I swear half my issues can only be fixed in the new settings menu system and half can only be fixed in the old settings menu system.

What frustrates me more is they took away features like dragging and dropping things from email to folder, in Windows 10 and earlier versions you could click and hold a file, hover over the folder icon on the taskbar, and the window would pop up, doesn't do that in Windows 11. Or try setting your taskbar buttons to never combine on Windows 11, you can't.

But they also changed things making it (nearly) impossible to create a local account while installing instead of using a Microsoft account. As a privacy advocate I am highly against Microsoft forcing the use of Microsoft accounts on user's personal computers.

Windows 10 burning through my mobile data allowance in less than 15 minutes when I wasn't even using a graphical browser was the last straw for me. It's far better to learn BSD or a Linux distro than deal with MS making things more and more anti-consumer. I'm in IT and the CONSTANT updates, especially ones that move/remove functionality and menus, drive me absolutely bonkers. The company I'm with has a contract with Microsoft, Dell reps, Windows infrastructure (i.e. Active Directory, MDTs) and I still find myself thinking "It's so much simpler and easier with Debian."

Their goal is to get everyone away from owning software, and to basically get them onto internet terminals, so they have total control of what you can use. Or you could just buy a PC from a Linux manufacturer, like the guys behind PopOS, and use that to be 100% compatible. Linux can never support 100% of the hardware out there. It's impossible. @@GabrielVilanova-n3p - not so much - I had problems with several pieces of hardware for my computer, and then games are where the money's at, and although linux game support has improved over the years, it's still not a replacement for windows gaming -- They simply focus on Windows more than Linux. If it was the reverse I think a lot of people would switch. Linux is still a niche "hobbyist" OS. By hobbyist I mean that one has to be a fan of tinkering with their system to want to use it, not that serious businesses can't or don't.

I had my workstation NVME Drive fail on me and it was bye bye Windows 11 and Linux on that. Now running Nobara from 64Gb USB Stick until I can replace my NVME Drive. Luckily all my important stuff is on an external SSD and with some tinkering - Nobara / Fedora is now setup to have everything in Home pointing to the directories on the SSD including my Thunderbird Email which keeps things space wise humming along nicely.

Things like this and the constant injection of ads and the bad kind of telemetry is why I had to get off of Windows this year. It was getting too tedious to constantly try to fix/patch/debloat every time there was an update (which I could not get into a forced off status). I've been on Windows since 3.11 and seeing it regress as far as being user friendly has been a huge frustration ever since we went to Windows 8 onward. Troubleshooting/supporting Windows users as a profession, these "tweaks" Microsoft is doing on Windows 11 is definitely making it a bigger challenge, but it'd be too much to move the company to 100% Mac or 100% Linux due to re-teaching the users a different OS. I've moved to Linux full time on all of my devices to get away from the W11+ trainwreck after not wanting to fight my OS just to use my computer. Been migrating family over to it as well so that I won't have to deal with the same jankiness.

There's plenty of videos on how to game on Linux. I haven't used windows on any of my machines for over four years now. Switched overnight to Linux and haven't looked back since. Best decision ever made regarding computer use. Rock solid and i have had two unrecoverable incidents where i have had to reinstall the OS because of doing things i knew could get hairy, and it did. Apart from that, gaming has been as good or sometimes even better on Linux. There's of course titles that isn't playable on Linux due to, of course, anticheat but as for me, those games doesn't exist or isn't worth playing. It is a mindset and the windows lovers will always cry out titles that explicitly doesn't work on Linux. Don't let that discourage you, switching to Linux could potentially be the best choice, computer related, that you've ever made. People that are stuck on windows tend to tell you about the shortcomings but they seldom mentions the vast possibilities on Linux.

I would love to jump in and use something like PopOS. But the problem I have with most of them is the lack of support for Secure Boot and the Intel driver having an issue when you're using a laptop that has NVIDIA optimus, capping the refresh rate of the display to 60 and making everything feel laggy and slow. And the only solution to this one that I know of is to disable the Intel GPU to bypass Optimus and use the Dedicated GPU which is basically saying goodbye to battery life.

I can understand this irritation and escape strategy, but I am reminded of something I encountered when I was recently battling printeres in Windows 11 and thought about moving them to a Linux server. A reply in a detailed Q&A about this scenario said "Switching to Linux won't solve your printer problems". 😂Still, good luck with it. One of the advantages of moving any functionality to Linux is that while it may take a lot of frustration to get working, once it's working it stays working. (Full disclosure: I didn't switch the printers to Linux as they started working in Windows 11, but I am doing the transfer as a background task, for the eventual day that Microsoft clobbers them). My Linux recommendation: 1. Lenovo Thinkpad laptop, 2 to 5 years old. Excellent build quality, good selection of USB ports, very fast with Linux. 2. openSUSE 15.5 works for me, but I that's what I'm used to.

I do appreciate Microsoft trying to make windows more user friendly. However, for us old timers from win 3.1 and dos etc. the GUI layers are rather bothersome. I tried Win 11 for a few days and all I seen was this new GUI layer on top of win 10. Getting in the way of what I really wanted to do. Which is sad. I don't think they focused on core issues like process utilization, memory management, and less cpu cycles for given tasks. Oh well. I will stick with Win10 and Debian.

Windows XP and 7 were the pinnacle of user-friendliness and design for Windows. Windows 8 tried to become tablet-friendly, 10 just mixed the 2 UIs and dog piled in spyware features. 11 is yet another onion layer with more spyware baked in. 11’s Metro looks good, sure but every other program still has plain white titlebars. I was disappointed when I saw that. The mismatched UI cluster continues.

I suspect that over time all of the really talented people who really understood Windows under the hood moved on or retired, so the best they can do now is paint over the top of it and add spyware. Dabbling with the internals is too risky and prone to causing problems for users who just want everything to work.

Windows 11 24H2 was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Printer problems with Windows 10 and 11 is never ending. I'm beginning to think there's a mole in Microsoft forcing people to other OS's. Linux Mint Cinnamon is my new desktop OS on most of my PC's, OpenBSD on my servers with one FreeBSD desktop.

One thing I hated about the new update is the remapping for the Win+X menu. I used to just press Win+X and "F" to bring up the programs list, but now that they've remapped it to "P" it just makes the shortcut less convenient to use.

Why wouldn't you just hit the Windows key and type a few letters of the program name in order to open it? It's much faster that way, and you don't need to use the mouse to click on anything. Takes me less than 2 seconds to open any particular program.

But the startup menu was actually easy to deploy in a company and the simple users quickly migrated to it because of it's few choice and aimplicity if only using a couple of applications for the daily work.

Back in 2019 I made my own 'build' based on 1903 Pro (removed telemetery, disabled intrusive services, installed the 'classic' start menu etc.) and have been using it ever since. When I stumble upon a win11 laptop, it infuriates me so much. I plan to stick with my 1903 for as long as I can now.

@@Gordoxgrey I've had 1903 which was also super light version for a few years, and reinstalled to a newer one, just because of gaming, some games(very very few but still) wouldn't run. The Xbox app also couldn't update and was unusable without full windows update(i did everything to disable updates to be fair). Now i have 21H1 and everything runs, although some new games require even newer version. Never upgrade. Reformat the disk in bios windows install menu and install fresh. It's not as intimidating as it sounds, you can do it in an hour, and starting fresh is exciting.

So you end up having some settings going to Control Panel, others going to Settings, and they just feel disconnected. They need to build the next Windows from the ground up.

But they never will start from scratch because of "backward compatibility". People want to be able to run their software forever so we will never see a better filesystem, a totally new kernel, the registry will be here forever and same with the shell backdoors to get into things. Way back before Vista MS was talking about a total rewrite and it was met with lots of backlash. I find it funny that Apple gets commended for moving OSX forward and dropping support for old tech like when they finally dropped MacOS9 support via rosetta or the eventual upcoming drop of intel app support from the new arm processors but if Microsoft tried it they would get crucified. BTW the kernel itself, its roots go way further back than windows 7. Try NT 3.51. They have been building off the NT kernel for a very long time.

YES! *Exactly* this happened to me a few weeks ago when I had to manually install a printer for a user. Printer management on a standalone windows computer has been a standard procedure since XP. I get that decluttering the UI by obscuring less used tools and features is a quality of life change, but the "Devices & Printers" page is an essential and integral part of the OS... Meanwhile they added "phone" on start menu of the settings page. A whole section of the settings page dedicated to one page which contain exactly one setting. I expected windows 11 to finally unify the settings page and the control panel but it's still a hacky mess with tons of crosslinking.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with control panel as it was in Windows 98, it was quick to navigate and contained all the essentials in one convenient place.... what we have now is a joke compared with that. The problem is as microsoft added things to control panel it became WAY too busy, they cluttered it up themselves and then uncluttered it by complicating it even further. By windows 8 there was around 60 icons in control panel (including utterly pointless things like "getting started" and "people near me), but at least you knew the thing you were looking for would be there SOMEWHERE.

The new printers page in the new settings actually looks pretty functual to me you can add printer (including a link to the dialog that let's you add them manually), see all you printers and it has links to all advanced property pages for all the printers. They are not removing functionality they are just gradually moving it to new new control panel to unify things more.

It really does suck having grown up using Windows as long as I can remember, I know the OS inside and out as much as any of us do. But a lot of the learning I do around the newer Windows operating systems is revolved around clamping down on tracking, their *technically forced ecosystem that we have to claw our ways out of and it just makes me sad these days. They out right refuse the user permissions to turn off certain services and change certain files so you have to go far out of your way to rip out all the trash than you ever have before and its just getting depressing. I've been using linux more and more these days but windows has always ultimately remained my favorite main OS to use for my main PC. I've always been used to modifying Windows but these days it seems like I have to break the locks like a jailbroken device in order to use my computer how I want, or go back to maining linux. @@CrashedIntoTube Yea this is all stuff I've accomplished but the massive problem here is the lengths they are seeming to go to prevent me from stopping certain services that I instead have to block from making contact to the internet using Pi-Hole but then windows will literally spam these requests so hard that It will ocassionally lag my computer so here I am scouring the internet for more regedit tweaks and alike to gain back control of my "pro.." copy of windows. I prefer windows only phoning home for updates and alike when I want it to, but it does not mean I want to be cut off entirely from them.

@@Doegiz Don't just let windows update on it's own. That is a major problem that many are doing. ALWAYS read what they are updating and only chose specific updates that you want. Because they know people are blocking their stuff, so you go through all that work and then in one of their updates they can put it all back in. Go to the KB reference and read what that update is for, anything that just says general system update, don't let it update because that is mainly telemetry stuff If you are ever having a hard time deleting something from the core of windows just install yamicsoft windows manager and you will be able to delete it from there.

Some people have written that Microsoft is making the "year of Linux" more possible than the real Linux community, and I couldn't agree more. In my opinion, Linux Mint will be the best choice for new Linux users. It has many pre-installed programs that make it easy to "plug and play". Also, when I've been using Mint lately, I haven't needed a terminal at all! And if I don't need it, I think most "normal" users won't either. Which makes it, in my opinion, probably the 1st distro that will be common (even more popular than ubuntu I think)

I think if you truly want it to be the year of Linux, you have to get the average computer user to even know that Linux exists. The vast majority of people who use PCs have likely never heard of it. Most people know about Windows, Mac and maybe Chromebooks. I think there has to be a big push to get PCs with Linux pre-installed in-stores. When was the last time you saw a computer pre-installed with a Linux distro in-store? Another big thing is that there has to be good support. Yes, a lot of Linux distros have been simplified and have become more user-friendly over the years. However, there has to be a good support system for people who are not familiar with Linux so that they can know how to use the new system. ideally, there should be a well structured support system that goes over the main differences between Windows and that particular Linux distro and what the equivalent programs on Linux are of the common programs people use on Windows. Otherwise, what will most likely end up happening is that some people don't understand why it looks so different than Windows and then can't find their way around a very unfamiliar (no matter how user friendly it is) looking system. If people got extremely confused moving from XP to 7, then from 7 to 8, and then to 10 and 11, what makes you think they wouldn't get extremely confused going to a Linux system that looks extremely different? Anyone who has worked in tech support in any capacity will know what I mean. Some people can catch on quickly and others will need a lot of hand holding.

Recent editions of Fedora are also extremely easy to use and very stable and up to date. But I still think getting average users to enjoy Linux is a stretch. And I was a daily user of Linux for a very long time but the lack of support for racing wheels (including force feedback), various flight sticks and rudder pedals and other peripherals is a very tough pill to swallow.

Lucky for you Linux now runs almost any game you want just as good as Windows can because of Proton. The only exception is a few games that use anti cheat still don't fully work yet but anti cheat makers and devs have been enabling support. Hunt Showdown just started working finally the other week. @@ADreamingTraveler I gamed on Linux exclusively last summer, and it's not quite there yet. I got every game to run eventually, but many of them required quite a lot of fiddling around with compatibility tools and patches, and off course anti cheat stuff was a pain to deal with. There was supposedly a way to get Elden Ring to run online, but I never figured it out. Performance was fine though. I didn't notice a meaningful difference. It was just really annoying that I basically had to do mod half the games I wanted to play, just to get them to run. And some games would just plain not work at all for no apparent reason, only to run great after a reboot. Altogether, it was a frustrating experience. Perhaps next summer Linux gaming will be smooth enough that I won't feel compelled to switch back.

I updated to the latest MacOS and it’s just as bad. You can’t install programs outside of the App Store without jumping through several hoops. Every once in a while the entire OS seems to slow down and become artificially sluggish, sometimes crashing. I think that’s Apple trying to get me to buy a new MacBook like they did with the iPhone 6. I had been toying around with Linux for over a decade but never quite got used to it enough to switch completely. It’s time I make a install usb and grind that penguin on bare metal.

Head to control panel, open Devices and Printers and then find the Windows 11 Settings box opening up. It really is painful for us IT folks. Spent way too long trying to figure out why external displays were not showing up on a users computer after a windows update. It was a setting drop-down that was set to "disable" One of many settings menus that were fine before and changed for no good reason.

I've installed Arch on a live USB drive, and I'm slowly going through the process of building a usable environment on Linux with it. It's a pain, but I'm slowly getting there, finding alternatives that work well within Linux (as opposed to just being bad knock-offs of what exists on Windows) and I'm hoping there'll come a point where I can just switch over and be done with Windows for good if it ever comes to that. It is not Linux' fault that a lot of software is not released on Linux, it shouldn't be that hard if their own hardware runs it and even MacOS - which has worst software compatibility of all major operating systems - gets releases. PS: Gaming is mostly hassle free.. some games won't run because of anti cheat though. Funnily enough, older titles tend to be more compatible with Linux then newer Windows versions.

I'm still using Windows 10. I installed Windows 10 on a new PC that was pre-installed with Win11. Some users can't even upgrade to Win11 because of hardware requirements. Microsoft could have made Windows 11 a major update for Windows 10, without requirements. They just want more profit from people buying new PCs, so that the user is paying for the operating system as well as the hardware

I remember on Windows XP where we complained about MS hiding setting behind the "bubblegum" interface, which was quickly found to just be a veneer and we could get at the old control panel and such that we were used to. That said, Windows 11 is seeming a lot more like Windows 8 to me where most of the contacts I have with other companies are telling me that they don't have any plans to upgrade to Windows 11 at the present time.

The Microsoft Settings "app" is still much uglier than the old Control Panel, *and* less functional. Hasn't Microsoft ever heard the maxim "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

@@saltwell I remember when Office changed to using the ribbon and there were complaints about Microsoft changing it. One of the things I heard from Microsoft was that they were getting requests for "new" Office features that were already in the product, people just didn't know about them or know how to find them. They might be stuck in a bit of the same place with Windows where professionals prefer the product to not change but the general population is asking for things that are already there. Not giving MS a pass on it, but it seems likely that there could be multiple forces at play. That said, if they're just trying to look like Apple/whatever other reason to change for change sake... then they need to knock that crap off.

@@saltwell Less functional, sure. But uglier? Do you hear yourself? Control panel looks absolutely horrible, even to this day. Anytime I have to use it, I really do not want to touch it any more than needed to. I will be quite happily waiting for when they finally move all settings into the modern app.

Definitely uglier to my mind. The Settings app has far too much wasted white space meaning that users constantly have to scroll to find things. It looks as if it was designed solely for visually impaired people - who obviously should be catered for, but no-one tries to make us all read large print books (and I personally am very short-sighted.) In comparison Control Panel looks neat as well as functional.

Similar to the printers; Just the other day I literally couldnt help a guy find his wifi options to manually enter a local wifi network. His network card had all the drivers and recognized it exists but I just couldnt see any of the wifi networks available. Thankfully a simple reboot fixed it but that’s not a good enough answer to fix the root of whatever was causing an issue.

And that is why one does not upgrade to the latest windows version, one needs to give MS some time to sort out its own messes. Its why I stayed on Windows 7 for so long and only started using win 10 well into its cycle. I won't be upgrading to windows 11 unless I absolutely have to or maybe just make the jump to Linux.

I think the Win 10 22H2 update broke my computer. Now I just get a black screen. I updated a couple of days ago and now I can use my computer. I can’t even boot into Windows 10 or into safe mode.

Another issue with windows. I have to manually uncheck to auto-update drivers because windows will downgrade my GPU driver with a 2 year old one. Which windows can see that I have a newer driver but decided to downgrade the one I manually installed.

it's crazy, i've had to fully re install my windows because of bugs that ive kept encountering like the language inputs. as time went on, i started having a big long list of language inputs which for your information, ive never messed about with the languages and everything just eventually breaks down in the operating system where ive started using other oses

I launch a game and PC freezes and I have to do hard reset. The reason for this is Windows constantly downgrading my GPU driver. So I have to use gpedit...

I really tried to roll with win 11 multiple times and it was just a cluster, everything was hidden so deep. I will be sticking with win 10, at least you can find stuff still. Not to mention my games run better on win 10.

search in Windows 11 is your friend. Also ironic that MS is building some good tools for terminal like winget. Seems like some folk inside MS are Linux fans and driving parts of the OS that direction.

I have experienced this same thing happening to all kinds of software, even mods in games I have been using. At some point the developer gets a creative idea and instead of backing up the version that works perfectly fine and trying out the new idea in an experimental or 2.0 build, they decide to force it into the only available version, ripping out or completely change core features and functionality and ruin everything. I don't know if it's pure ego or ignorance, but it's incredibly infuriating.

This stuff drives me nuts as well, I'm a IT Coordinator at a school and Microsoft is starting to change things with every dam update just like Apple! Every time i go to troubleshoot a device the menus have been buried ever further so it takes more time to troubleshoot then i have to fix problems to fix problems to fix the main problem that's if I remember what the main problem was hahaha. Dont even get me started with Microsofts "NEW" Network menu! 🥵

Network menu was broken already in Windows 7. Try using usb tether, you have to click a non-intuitive house icon and merge networks, and every setting is scattered all over

Don't you feel at times they're doing this to sell more support and formation programs? When I want to be efficient in my working place, I make my most important tools the closest to me at all times; but I'm often finding it easyer to use a third party program to call up scripts I program myself to execute shortcuts to what I need most than digging this OS to do it on its own... When you find it easyer to ask a neighbor for sugar than trying and finding it in your own house, you should know you have a serious problem.

I work in IT. I have to disable so many Windows “features” for others that I actually got sick of my own Windows desktop. Since I recently switched to an AMD 6900 XT GPU, I figured why not. I’ll never go back. I’ve actually sacrificed some software that is easier to use because it’s so smooth and stable. M$ is really driving people away. I’ve been dual booting for a month and dread ever switching back (some work stuff but so far I’ve avoided it). I even played DOOM Eternal at higher FPS on Linux. It’s crazy.
