The Colorado is the more practical vehicle. Don't care what anyone says. More reliable engine (2.8 is bulletproof), WAY better MPG, 10x easier to find parking for, fits in all garages as opposed to the wide and tall Raptor not fitting in some. The 2.8 is a 500,000 mile engine, the Raptor has never had anything more than a 200,000 mile engine in it (and don't reply to say your friend had a 300,000 mile raptor, because #1 no he didn't and #2 I'm talking averages). You also can't bring any full sized truck into 80% of parking ramps in the US.

Screwg oogle if I'm going into a parking garage I'm way too far away from home. that said the Colorado 4wd isn't much shorter than the typical 4wd 1/2 ton. and most parking garages are 6.5ft tall and located in big cities. if I'm driving my duramax I'm likely never gonna fine a parking spot. of course that's to be expected, it's a 21ft long dually. parking at Wal-Mart can be a pain at times.

My '18 Colorado (4 cylinder engine and manual trans.) is a great light-duty hauler, easy to park and fun to drive. Admittedly, it isn't a good choice for towing, as it's rated to tow a paltry 3,500 lbs. For me it's a fun, reliable hauler and all for just $20k. What's not to like?

As a truck driver you should build in a factor of safety especially when braking. The other thing is a wide foot print offers much more torsional stability which helps with winds.
@BoopSnoot
@BoopSnoot 6 жыл бұрын
The Colorado doesn't have a narrow footprint. Look at the specs. Bed sizes are standard so its just not possible to make the Colorado that much narrower than a full size truck. Think of it as "8/10ths", and not as one of those mini trucks from the 80s.

You could greatly increase the stability of the colorado by using the weight distributing hitch with an anti-sway bar. But yeah a bigger heavier truck will always be more stable when towing.

I think for once in a while the colorado wouldn't be soo bad if you go ahead and put some trailer sway control on there and use the weight distributing hitch.. but I think that weight is on the high end of what I'd tow....

They have already towed a trailer in the 6,000lb range with this Colorado and it did just fine! It has 7,700 lb towing capacity. The demonstration proved that size of the trailer is just as important as overall weight of the trailer. if the trailer was smaller but the same weight, it would have towed it with much less dramatic effect.

I find the Colorado to have the best looking front end appearance. One thing in the Colorado's favour is the option of a 2.8 litre Duramax diesel, something not available in the Ford F150. While the F150's size may help it in towing a trailer, what I believe it needs is a turbo diesel engine in order to help it tow up hill.

Preston Gladd I think these are more for people debating on buying a mid size vs half ton. Even if half ton wins, does price justify the extra amount of towing you gain. Of course the mid size they picked is crazy expensive so that would end my debate right there.

Blayne fair enough, but it's still comparing apples to oranges. If they would have compared the ram rebel vs. the raptor, that would have been a like comparison. It seems more like they had the Colorado and were like, hmm we need to create more content, what else do we have laying around that we can compare it to.

Preston Gladd understandable but ones diesel and only slightly smaller. For the buyers who are unsure if they want a full size or a diesel Colorado this would help them identify they're needs. I think that's kinda what they were aiming for.
@PrestonGladd
@PrestonGladd 7 жыл бұрын
Blayne if they would have waited and compared it to the 2017 raptor which is 500lbs lighter, I think that would have been comparable. You can put a duramax on a moped and it will have all the torque and pulling power in the world, but the weight of the vehicle and wheelbase is the key factor in pulling a trailer, not so much engine size, in the way they were approaching this test "with a large trailer". I suppose if they would have done the video of the Colorado by its self and not comparing it to the raptor directly it would have been better received, by me at least. I love this channel, but sometimes I wonder about their content decisions.

Reviews brag about the new Colorado and it's towing 7000 lbs. I have an 2007 Ford Sport Trac and it can tow 7000 lbs as well. A ten year older truck that's just as capable. I towed 7000 lbs across Canada from Alberta to Newfoundland doing 90 kms/hr (best fuel economy) and only issues I had was going up hills in Ontario doing 50 Kms/hr as I didn't want to push my truck too hard. I don't see the big deal.

This is a good test of capacity because both trucks are similarly rated, 7600 versus 8000lbs. The obvious differences are in size and power. I figured the Raptor would do better towing a brick than the narrow, shorter Colorado would. The Colorado would probably fare better pulling an open car hauler, but a trailer this size demands a full-sizer even if the weight fits within tow specs.

If a WD hitch were involved, I wonder if the Colorado would be as acceptable as the fullsize when it comes to handling. The towing MPG and everyday drive-ability of the Colorado diesel have mean leaning away from the fullsize, but I still want to be able to pull a 25' camp trailer cross country.
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 7 жыл бұрын
That's probably a tall order for even the Duramax Colorado. The truck's payload rating will be about 1650, so at the maximum 20% hitch weight on a 63xxlb (dry) 5th wheel, you're already in the 1200-1400lbs area, leaving you only 200-450 lbs for your stuff and people (since all factory tow ratings assume just a driver). You could go down to 10% on the hitch and open up more room on the GCVWR. That said, the current Silverado payload ratings aren't much higher, and Ram trucks would pretty much be out of the question unless you got a 2500. Depending on the F-150 spec, that could comfortably tow a 25'. I'm assuming all current trucks though, not older ones. The Titan and Tundra should be fine choices as well. The Colorado Duramax will definitely tow the weight of a 5th wheel (assuming you don't bring a lot of stuff), I just don't think the stability will be there.
@BrandonHughes
@BrandonHughes 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply SurelyYewJest. A 5th wheel type trailer is definitely out of the question, but I was never considering one of those. Your 10-20% weight figures vs. payload are a good point though. I'm looking at something more like this: passport.keystonerv.com/models/2770rb/?alttemplate=ModelPage 5525 (closer to 6000 with my stuff) lbs trailer weight, with 645-700 lbs on the hitch. Weight wise its right in line with a Colorado Duramax, but that particular trailer is 30' overall, and still 8' wide. Assuming I can get the weight right, I'm just curious how the Duramax midsize would do with a good WD hitch, and an 8'x25 to 30' trailer.

The Raptor is wider than a standard F-150. I wonder if a standard F-150 would have swayed with that trailer too? Hmmm... Most people towing aren't looking for a Raptor. This "Duramax" is basically the same engine that was sold in the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty here in the U.S. and I owned a couple of those. Towing 7,000 lbs. I averaged 15 MPGs. The Raptor would be hard pressed to average 15 MPGs running empty.

I have a 12 Raptor and an 08 Cummins and I find the Raptor to be far more versatile than the ram for my use as I only tow 6-7k pounds like 5-7 times a year. Much better ride quality in the raptor also. Not to mention fantastic off road capability. If I needed to tow more than 8k and often, then the ram would have to be the truck of choice if I had to pick one. But two is better than one.

Let's rephrase then.. Every smart person towing isn't looking for a Raptor. The Raptor and Power Wagon have the lowest payload and towing specs in their respective models because of how the suspension is set up for offroad use, and also because of the added weight of all that hardware. If you're towing, you should be looking elsewhere.

First off, the raptor is on a larger than stock AT tire and the colorado is on a street/passenger tire. The raptor was also never designed to be towing large loads. The gearing and suspension was never made to be towing. Need to go back to comparing trucks that are remotely similar. A mid sized diesel and an off-road inspired half ton? Two bad choices on a towing comparison. Gas Colorado v Gas Silverado or Tacoma v Tundra is more of a test

Stability in towing is determined buy the foot print and weight of the towing vehicle. You can pull air planes with the Colorado or f150 but control is another story. "Get a larger truck" So basically, get the Ram ecodiesel? Ignoring the fact that the Raptor, a sport offroader, is being used for a utility test like hauling, I don't think 0-60 times are as important as torque and mpg. Let's face it, diesel wins out hands down in those latter two areas, and I could care less about acceleration times if I'm getting 20+ mpg while hauling a big trailer

The overwhelming majority of consumers buy much more truck than they need. You'll see guys with Dodge Ram 1500s everyday that don't even own a trailer, and the most they've ever towed was a small rental u-haul or had a motorcycle strapped down in the back.

...and if you pay attention, the trailer that was towed by the Taco is more aerodynamic and used a weight-distributing hitch. That's the same setup they used when taking the GMC Canyon up the Ike. This video is to show that a large non-aerodynamic flat-front trailer (and no weight distributing hitch) will pull easier with a full-sized truck.

I had no idea these trucks existed until I saw the HD on his one day and was scratching my head. Then he told me about them and now I see these trucks around town fairly often. There has been recent rumor that probably Ford will release a half-ton HD (probably with the diesel V6 would be my guess). The combination of Ram EcoDiesel's success and Titan XD's value proposition may have motivated them to get back into that niche.

think 3 dimesionally this is showing the pros and cons of owning a 1/2 vs a 1/4, yes even though the 1/4 towing is up there it just shows the trade offs with getting a bigger truck. Would you tow a 31,000 pound trailer with a 1/4 or a 1 ton, vise versa would you go on a trail with a 1 ton no you would use a 1/4 since they are smaller. The point is to show the circumstances where you would buy one over the other.
@SgtJoeSmith
@SgtJoeSmith 7 жыл бұрын
the main purpose of video was to show that even though the truck with smaller physical size may have enough power to tow a bigger trailer there are other things to consider. like steering and braking and handeling with a lighter truck. they shouldve done braking test to show how much more braking distance you need. also coolant and transmission temp comparisons after driving an hour. it dont matter how much hp a truck has and how heavy of a trailer it can get rollng if the truck cant stop it after it gets it rolling.

Why test a truck without the WDH if anyone that actually has to tow that way would use one? This is as stupid as not using the cruise control while doing the IG. That's exactly the oppsite of what you are advertising. Your claim is to do "real world reviews". What driver would NOT use the CC if there is one?! What driver that tows trailers in a regular basis (the target group of this video!) would decide to ditch the WDH? What a wasted oportunity.
@kylevanwinkle2081

NameNaameNameeNaamee I have in the past on a few vehicles had the cruise control motor blow fuse while trying to use it with a heavy load. it isn't made to adjust at wide throttle gaps need for steady towing full time. that said if the truck isn't struggling much cruise control usually works fine
@NameNaameNameeNaamee
@NameNaameNameeNaamee 7 жыл бұрын
On a modern vehicle with trottle by wire like those tested on TFLT, this should not be a problem at all.
@kylevanwinkle2081
@kylevanwinkle2081 7 жыл бұрын
Very possible I've only had issues on older cable driving throttle bodies. That said not using cruise control isn't a bad thing especially in traffic laden areas. On very open highways it may make a difference but if the manufacturer tuned the pedal right is should be just as easy to hold a steady speed with your foot. This definitely wasn't an issue on the older cable driven throttle bodies
@NameNaameNameeNaamee
@NameNaameNameeNaamee 7 жыл бұрын
The question is rather this: If your goal is to achieve a speed as constant as possible since you are doing comparisons including stopping the time etc., why do you NOT use CC in that instance - especially uphill where momentum is everything, one false move on the pedal wil cost you seconds.
@kylevanwinkle2081
@kylevanwinkle2081 7 жыл бұрын
So a computer automatically can drive the throttle better that your foot? Maybe sometimes but hypermilers have proven that wrong for quite a long time. Cruise control doesn't care about mpg it just cares about stead speed. Going up a hill and losing speed will burn less gas, then you can accelerate down the other side to pick speed back up. That's just one instance that the computer can't calculate. Cruise control is designed for Driver comfort, the added benefit of better mpg on flat ground was a side effect and manufacturers have tried tuning the cruise control systems for better mpg. This is why cruise control typically is slower to accelerate when increase in speed by small amounts is desired but try jumping 20mph, it will floor the throttle to get to speed.
