The absolute main reason to buy a mid-size over a full size is going off-road. The mid-size trucks are just more capable off-road.

Parking and congested parking lots is/are becoming more difficult for everyone, especially full size. Trucks are getting longer, wider, taller with every model generation, but parking spaces are the same. And a great many full-size drivers don't have enough situational awareness or consideration to make sure an 8'-9'+ (mirrors folded or not folded) wide vehicle is centered in the parking lot. Standard parking slot are 8-9ft. wide. A modern 3/4 ton with mirrors extended has now exceeded 9ft, and often driven by people with no talent. Operator compency/consideration and vehicle size are trending in opposite directions. Three full-size vehicles parked beside each other have to be parked accurately in the space, or the center vehicle occupants are screwed. There will eventually need to be separate parking for larger vehicles, which will only increase sales because one of the main selling points is ego and social comparison. I've been in trucks all my life, drive a Dodge 2500 daily, but I park away from the crowd. It's easier for me and others to not wedge my truck in between others who may not have healthy dexterity when entering or exiting a vehicle or may be wrangling children. The video speaks of it, and it's a real probably as of current times.

@Resistculturaldecline fullsize guys don't think twice about blocking half the parking lot or sticking out 3 feet into the drive thru area, or even taking up 2 spaces. Which is why you see alot of em with rear-end damage or key scratches along the side ....

Just discovered your channel and subbed. The full-size vs midsize debate has been on my mind a lot recently. I purchased a 2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x which I love and is perfect for my lifestyle because I enjoy going off-roading and it's a great daily driver too. But man I do like the looks of the new Nissan Titan and that V8 sounds so good lol. I just don't haul or tow anything to justify having one. Your video put my mind at ease (for now) and I'll stick with my Frontier. Maybe one day if I get a camper to tow I'll buy a Titan. Thanks for the great video!

Base model Ranger is just over 2000 lbs payload. It drops slightly with more options, but this is probably the reason that many people find the Ranger rides stiffer than many other trucks in the segment, because of its high payload.

@@chrisx5127 I took a hard look at my actual needs and bought a base model Chrysler Voyager for $27,000. I couldn't justify the price tag of the F-150. When I need a truck, I rent one. Yesterday, for example, I rented a box truck for $120 and hauled 10,000 pounds to a customer. I can do that a LOT with the $20,000 plus I saved vs a full sized truck as a daily driver.

Pretty much the conclusion I came up with my research. Though its blown my mind why no company that has been able to get a midsize truck get over 30mpg and maintain its tow rating. I watched people take 1.9 diesel motors and stuff them into rangers and Tacoma's. They were getting mid 30s while towing a utility trailer. Maybe I Should do this lol.

Good video. I bought my Ford Ranger Lariat Tremor because of its smaller size and it’s towing capability. It’s a little towing monster. It also has a gas turbo which is going to be hands down the best mid-sized option when I explore the eastern seaboard. Once again loved the video

That turbo is gonna wear your engine

@@alexsalazar5161 Curious, why do you say that, and in what way will a turbo 'wear' (I'm thinking you mean wear out) an engine?
@mergenocide
@mergenocide 9 ай бұрын
@@richarde1355 I'm figuring he's referring to the idea that a turbo will generally put an engine under undue wear and heat, shortening its life span. I'm not entirely sure if this is true across the board. I would say that an engine designed to take a turbocharger would probably be fine. But if it's a engine not designed with turbo in mind and the manufacturer rather lazily added the turbo to cheaply increase hp, or if the turbocharger was aftermarket and the manufacturer had no intention whatsoever for their engine to be turbocharged, it stands to reason that a turbo will put stress on the engine it wasn't designed to handle and in turn increase part degradation. Just my two cents.

i am currently in the market for a truck. my price range is about 40k. im looking at a new or barely used tacoma for 40k or less. or a barely sued 19-21 ram 1500. also similar price. I currently dont tow or NEED a full size pickup but I see the full size as a truck I will never need to replace. A tacoma or ranger I see myself possibly needing to replace if I want to eventually get a trailer.

I guess I'm more for my lifestyle than what has the better towing and/or payload numbers. I had a '10 Dakota with the 3.7l v6, 4-speed auto (I sold her so my family could have a house in a different state from where we were living at the time :(). I'd definitely agree that she wasn't as good of a value (vs. a fullsize ram 1500), she managed up to 22 mpg on the highway (and could tow ~5k lbs, 1800 lbs. payload). I definitely appreciate the smaller size for maneuverability and parking reasons, but she was only the extended cab version (6.5' bed), so she wasn't ideal for family at all. I miss that truck, but would love to get another one (with a crew cab though) or an ecodiesel gladiator (if I could afford it) as a first option. For lack of bed space, I have a 5' x 8' trailer. :)

Exceptional video chocked full of the critical information regarding mid-size vs. full-size truck information. I also really appreciate your comments regarding payload being the critical variable when towing. Towing is more than tow capacity. We own a small camper, 2005 Casita 17 Freedom Deluxe, that only weighs 2900 lbs. We love the maneuverability of our 2009 Kia Borrego V8 mid-size SUV and Casita. However, I would like to get a pickup truck in the next couple of years. I recognize the value of the full-size truck, plus if we ever decide to get a slightly larger camper, we would already have the truck to tow it. On the other hand, many midsize trucks will handle our Casita and we prefer the dimensions, size, and drivability of a mid-size. LOL, I go back and forth! ;) BTW, Sierra is adorable. Don’t blink, they grow up fast. My girls are 27 and 24 and are currently FaceTiming since one lives at home and the other about 1,000 miles away.

This is 7 months after your OP but I just ran across this video today. I too have a Casita 17 that I tow with a 2014 F150 that I bought because it had a trans cooler, tow package, 3.73 rear diff and brake controller. It has a standard 3.7 V6 and not too many other bells and whistles. It will tow 6700 lbs. so if I want to upsize my trailer a little I can. It tows the Casita with ease and gets about 16 mpg while towing and never seems short on power. My thought on midsize vs. full size is that a larger truck (within reason) can work more easily and achieve comparable mileage to a mid size. I can still get 21 to 24 mpg on average depending on speed while driving without towing and have plenty of room in the cab. I am happy with my choice. Camp on! Casitas rule!

I would have went for a mid-size if not the back seat. A lot of times my wife's best friend will ride with us and arcades and that's five people in the car so automatically one adult has to sit in the back. I can fit in between two car seats in my F-150 without a problem I could not do that in a Tacoma or a Colorado or any other midsize.

I love your videos… I’ve watched quite a few, and you go straight to the facts. I’ve owned an off road capable wrangler, loved it, nothing beats taking doors off, had tons of fun, but sold it when my wife lost her job (due to racial discrimination), and thought we needed to move out of TN, so I bought a Honda Ridgeline based on statistics and facts, and hated it. It was the perfect truck…for someone else, just wasn’t meant to be used like a truck. I traded it in, and got a Tacoma based on reliability and desire to off road and use the back for mulch, wood, etc…one you go truck, it’s hard to back, but it seems so small, my head hits the ceiling, no adjustable seats, navigation is crappy, the windows are small, the rear has no air vents for my kids, glove box and storage is small, shifts sluggish. I’m tired of trading in trucks and loosing money, but am split… should I get the gladiator, for best of both Jeep/truck experience… or go full size F150 with big windows and sunroof for family trips… same price as gladiator? Any thoughts?

You’re going to have to go full size Silverado 1500 ram 1500 or f150. The best overall Tacoma and the best looking the Colorado in mid size can only pull 7,700 lbs. I wouldn’t pull beyond 6,000 in a midsize. You’ll void warranty going beyond towing capacity.
