I'm so glad you did this side by side comparison! I've had MftR from pretty early on after getting into the hobby and always found it to be a delightful divergence from the more serious and thinky Euros I quite enjoy. I was really curious to see what changes were made with Middle Ages. I think I'm with Maggie and am happy to keep Majesty in my collection. 😄

Thanks for the comparison ! I bought a like-new copy of Majesty for a song last year and I'm quite happy with it. I was curious about the differences but I'll stay with Majesty and its quirky charm... and those chips!! 😉

Thank you SO much for this... I have seen so much coverage of Middle Ages but didn't know whether or not to seek it out for myself since I'm a longtime fan of Majesty. I think in the end I'm leaning towards Maggie's love of the quirk and charm of the original - not that I'd say no to playing Middle Ages, but I don't feel compelled to seek it out now. Super helpful discussion! Thanks!

Great comparison video. Love watching the two of you. Majesty for the Realm has sat forgotten on my shelves for a few years so this is a great reminder to break it out. For lighter games like this, I think I prefer having a little chaos and randomness because I usually break them out with those less experienced at games than me and it’s good if they aren’t pure strategic which can often work against the less familiar gamer. I want something the6 can do well in without me having to deliberately downplay.

A great review and comparison, as always! I have Majesty: For the Realm and pretty much ignored the new version, but that puzzle piece fit on the board is tempting! :). I really can't believe they didn't keep the chips and just add a $5 chip. But I also realize that would increase the cost point. Decisions, decisions! Makes me want to break out and play Majesty!

Thanks for the detailed comparison! Changing to Kingdomino style drafting from the Firenze (or Century Spice Road) style is an interesting move. I guess it's not exactly like Kingdomino, because you see the future choices in advance, to remove some of the luck, but that could also add some AP. I agree that "Majesty: For the Realm" is a bit of a mouthful, but I'm not convinced the new super-generic title is better.

Middle Ages looks pretty fun. I will probably pick it up if I see it at my FLGS. Seems like a good family weight game to thrown into the rotation.

Is it difficult to buy Middle Ages ? I Googled it and couldn’t find anywhere local to buy it.

I disagree with the theme aspect. I have not played the old one, but building out a realm is pretty thematic here and getting new buildings/ lands are pretty and makes sense when you build a mill it means ppl pay you gold, because you created something that can be sold to others, thus getting gold. If that makes sense. Also walls vs barracks is again, makes sense, if you have "more wall" you are safe. :D I would argue that it is 50-50 both games equally good. Also LOVE how the turn order can change and this has a HUGE impact on strategy. This is the main element I believe of this puzzle, when to go first when to go last, etc. Also I would point out that the box is HIDEOUS. Pieces can not be fit in back without almost damaging them, box is way TOO TIGHT, why could they not make it 1cm bigger have no clue lol.

I like the new look, but I already have Majesty, so I probably won't get this over something else new. If someone brings Middle Ages around, I'll definitely play it though.
