The whole point of post-punk was to release the idea of a kind of music made with DIY ethos and values from any particular aesthetic.

Totally agree. Much of the newest post punk is vibe, not specific sounds. I still think production has to do with it a bit, like the type of reverb or sound of the bass

Ex super fan here I remember being super hyped for their unreleased track O funk back in 2009 which hopefully we see . I loved the dance punk sound of their first single and b side it was a snapshot in time and even by the time of antidotes arriving they wanted to shake those shackles a little ok maybe aside from 2ST and French open . I liked how they evolved their sound we have seen glimpses of them in touch with their roots Blue Blood and Providence maybe . A few of their songs I feel could have been released in different better forms as well like Everytime ( check out the early version ), M&Bs , Night Swimmers and Crest of the wave which have really cool guitar parts. I like the direction of In Degrees and Wild Green and we may see something more like that in future albums . Yannis has done some work with Underworld so we may see some cool ideas permeate , bass player has recently rejoined as well .

What is crank wave and who do I listen to get a glimpse?
@WiloPolis03
@WiloPolis03 2 ай бұрын
@@aimeebaggins Person obsessed with crank wave here (crankhead? crank waver? idk lol) - crank wave is a recent movement in rock music that started around the late 2010s and is still pretty active today. At its core, it's a subgenre of indie rock and post-punk, but it's notably heavier and proggier than many indie and post-punk genres before it. One iconic feature of it is its distinguishable vocal style - known as "talk-singing", where the lead vocalist sings somewhere between melody, shouts, and spoken word (it occasionally can even sound like rapping). The instrumentation is usually raw and in-your-face, and often with complex layers and time signatures. There's a lot of math rock, post-rock, noise rock & hardcore influence. Despite often having such an extreme sound, crank wave bands are also coated in irony and usually don't take themselves too seriously. This is a genre run mostly by zoomers, after all. Here's some crank wave artists to check out: - Squid - shame - Viagra Boys - Fontaines DC - Geese - IDLES - black midi (though they moved more into progressive rock after their debut) And here's some pretty quality crank wave albums for you to check out: - Squid - O Monolith (sounds like a chaotic fever dream) - Fontaines DC - Dogrel (sounds like classic punk) - Geese - 3D Country (fusion of crank wave with country, of all things) - shame - Drunk Tank Pink (just a good representation of the genre generally) - Viagra Boys - Cave World (a freaking _hilarious_ and dance-y crank wave album) - black midi - Schlaggenheim (honestly this one's so nightmarish that I've never been able to finish it all the way through lol) - Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia (haven't actually listened to this one but I've heard it's good, very gothic) Hope any of that makes sense! Thank you for coming to my TED talk

The thing is there were always a lot of cross-pollination since punk came out with disco, hip-hop and early electronic music. Proto house and techno DJs in New York, Chicago and Detroit played postpunk tracks but as soon as the scenes got any traction outside of their original spaces, the new fans wanted to focus on the core of their favored genres, but plenty of people involved still kept open ears and being influenced by genres, even if many fans were unaware

About Dance Punk in the 90's: Big Beat was its own - albeit sample-based - was a perfect storm of synths, beats, acid house and somehow blues. The chemical brothers, (block rockin beats) prodigy (smack my bitch up) and fatboy slim (push the tempo) all made monumental anthems of dance punk.

I'm from England, born in 83. There have always been (I guess you could call them) _"Rock Adjacent"_ crossover acts in other genres. Prodigy, over here, got tons of young people from the dancey-ravey-techno-ey kinda scenes at the time into the rock and metal scenes, and vice-versa. Prodigy themselves having a live guitarist who was in an industrial-esque metal band I was into at the time called Pitchshifter. All those groups mentioned would be something both genres could shake hands on and meet in the middle. Great shouts.

Part of it was making music that anyone could play. With a cheap guitar and no lessons you could play punk music. Now with a cheap computer and no lessons you can make electronic music. With the genres being so broad and murky, making punk with synthesizers isn't that far a stretch to me.

The anti-disco backlash was very much a response from mainstream rock radio (and general racism/homophobia), not the punks. The infamous "Disco Sucks" rally(/riot) was organized by a rock station DJ who was pissed that his station had changed format to disco/soul, IIRC. Friggin' Blondie put out a straight-up disco *banger* for crying out loud.
