Pre 1967 Palesrinians more than a "second class citizen" for some kibbutzniks. Have to say far from typical but nonetheless there 'on site and in sight' - generally disliked and resented by many of the 'old school' so to speak - was a man, a more recent arrival, responsible (at least when I was there) for allocating tasks to student volun- teers. I could hardly believe my ears, and certainly didn't want to, when he would describe local villagers with whom we would be working in the outlying fields as "Untermenschen"! A single anecdote, I know, but the overall atmosphere suggested something very amiss was being imposed on the majority of fellow kibbutzniks there.

Anthony brilliantly represents the diaspora Jewish evolution beyond its roots in narrow tribal/sectarian territorialism into a leading light of European humanism on multiple cultural fronts.
