"Introducing a female character just so the lead can have a baby and then killing her off..." This needs a name: Should we dub it "Mosbying" in honor of HIMYM's handling of the mother character? (Who I feel terrible about because I can't even remember the poor character's name) Sure it happened before, but HIMYM turned out to be an entire series dedicated to it.

Personally, I thought it was pretty fun. I came expecting a fun action movie, and that's what I got. I'm also a big fan of the Fast and Furious movies, so that also kinda helped. Also, for a movie that was over 2 hours, I felt like it breezed pretty quickly. Even during the slow moments, I was never bored.

+jolt I mean, I still rank F7 a bit higher, though. Mostly because of it being the sendoff to Brian O' Connor and being a tribute to Paul Walker. This movie was more of just a sequel, nothing more and nothing less. Not to say it's bad, far from it in fact. It's just that it doesn't have the emotional impact the last movie did. Still, it's a pretty enjoyable movie regardless.

At the start of 6, Dom was with Elena, and he and Bryan were racing to the birth of Bryan's son. At the end - a few days later - she leaves him because Letty is back. At the start of 7, Byran and Mia's son is in pre-school or kindergarten (so about 5 years later). In 8 Elena has a baby that is less than a year old. Some fuzzy math...

I can't remember if Sarah said she's seen the other movies but they don't introduce Elena in this movie just to kill her off, she was in Fast 5 so she wasn't new. It's not misogynistic to kill off a female when it's for a good reason. Elena didn't die because she was a woman she died because Dom cared about her and Cipher was trying to send him a message, and she just so happened to be a woman.

I completely agree with Sarah! That bugs the shit out of me every time it is used! To be honest the whole shoehorned relationship with Dom and Elsa Pataky was super weird particularly because it was kind of clear that Lettie was coming back. That said your next movie should totally be Sarah and her baby being kidnapped and Brad and Lloyd trying to save them to free Dave from "crime."

What I thought was weird is how Dom ditched his wife and friends because an ex-girlfriend was kidnapped. Like...I thought it'd be his sister but he's willing to throw them under the bus, kill innocent people, for his ex-girlfriend? Weird... I'd say it's him being like a super nice guy but...he let innocent people get killed, I'm pretty damn sure. Those zombie cars had people in them (at least some did). He's SO LUCKY his schemes worked out because he almost caused a World War 3 for a woman who wound up being shot dead anyway.

Does anyone else now wanna see them make this movie of a baby kidnapped by blonde jarred, dave doing crimes and brad saving baby with a cat sidekick. And really I get annoyed at anything brought back just to be killed that and characters introduced just to be killed off for the reason of "motivation" or "connection to the audience" Like in GoT they brought back Rickon and Asha (Osha?) just to kill them. They are gone for entire seasons and literally brought back to die. In all honestly, they could have just cut the last kid. It's different than like the younger Lannister children who were kinda background and had more significance later. Or like in AHS: Hotel that daughter could have been cut. The only function I see her having is, in the end, to show time having passed. Other than her, everyone else was either dead or a vampire.

Isn't it possible that Michelle Rodriguez told producers that this would be her last F&F movie so they wanted to tie up loose ends? But then again, doesn't hold up much when just one movie ago they literally had a non-returning character ride off into the sunset, albeit for much different reasons
@S7ARV4D3R

Though I understand Sarah's point about Elsa Pataky's role in the movie, I disagree with her stance on it. It didn't bother me at all, and it made sense within the franchise. The character had been introduced as a major character in 5, had a supporting role in 6, cameoed in 7 just so we knew she still existed, and had another supporting role in 8. It's not like the character left after 5 and then returned just to be killed off. She's been a supporting player from 5 through 8. Not a major character, but at least a character. If you want an example of bringing a character back just to kill them, look at Fast Five. Chris Morgan brought Matt Schulze's character from the first film back, only to kill him within an hour of bringing him back in order to create an emotional reason to propel the plot. This was not that same scenario. So while I can understand why she might feel that way, I don't honestly think it's misogynistic, just part of the story.

With all the ridiculousness the thing im amazed me about this film is that luke evans and jason Statham went from hard as nails villainous killers who killed two team members as well as multiple other innocents to comedy good guys and no one gave a shit. A complete waste of the villains they set up and made a mockery of the plot of the last to films and vin diesels characters loyalty to family. Hell in the next one why not bring sypher back to team with them as friends and ignore everything she did in this one.

The Fourth and the 8th movie only take place like 2 years apart, 9 months for Mia's pregnancy, 9 months for Dom's kid to come out and then 6 months for the baby to get older. So Dom only being 40 makes a little sense.

I felt the same way about the fourth film, killing off Letty just so Dom goes on a revenge path. It's a dumb cliche in screenplays, but she came back to life so is that one excused? I don't think so, because she still doesn't get to be in the rest of four or five. It ticked me off when they killed Elena just so Dom can have a baby. That was the worst part of this movie, but other than that, pretty enjoyable.

Brad is, for me, the only opinion that really matters when it comes to action flicks. While everyone was panning Gangster Squad years ago because it wasn't some deep noir flick, Brad came out in said "it was a solid B-movie" and I enjoyed the shit out of it. He didn't overreact to Suicide Squad, enjoying it for its merits but not expecting a masterpiece, which is how I saw it. When I was on the fence about Purge: Election Year, when he gave it a glowing review, I knew I was in for a treat. So, I am super excited for Fate of the Furious, but now do have the tempered expectations when I step into the theaters on Sunday.

Don't get how killing her is misogynistic, it's just REALLY lazy. The problem is that if she somehow survived, you have to deal with a BUNCH of problems: How does Letty react to Doms former lover being around, especially when Dom wants to be in his sons life? How does Dominic balance his relationships with Letty, his son, and his son's mother? How does Dom's son's mother react to Dom being in a relationship with Letty, especially when Dom wants to be with his son but obviously likes Letty? I haven't met many people who can make a set of relationships like that work (personally that'd be more unbelievable and bad writing than killing her). Dom giving up Letty invalidates the previous movie, and Dom giving up his son invalidates the plot of this movie. Letty leaving Dom works, but it's a downer for your hero. Getting the mother out of the picture is the only way to get both a resolution to the plot and a complete happy ending for the hero. Getting the mother out of the way requires her to give it up. Doing it voluntarily begs the question of why she didn't abort or give it up for adoption. Dom can't win a custody battle, so that's out. The hero kidnapping his son isn't really very heroic, so that's out. The mother dying gives an easy way to give both the hero a happy ending and resolve the plot decently. The name shit on the other hand is pretty messed up, like how does that make sense? That's stupid, and there's an easy out - name the kind Dominic Jr. Sure, it'd be super cliche, but it's a lot less cumbersome than trying to get in Dom naming his son. P.S. If you wanted to write a drama, some of the things in the second paragraph would work as plot elements. Trying to make the relationship work or Letty leaving Dom would have a lot of possibilities for character growth and interpersonal drama. Unfortunately, this series is NOT a drama series. It's an action movie first, which means the plot is really only there to give characters motivation for the action scenes. Any scene that's more than 5 minutes without jokes, guns, or cars would anger or bore the general audience and it would be axed by the studio before it was even filmed. P.S.S. You might think my opinion of the general action movie audience is pretty low, but at the same time this series is in the top 10 for highest grossing franchises. Fast and the Furious is also one of only two original (non-adaptation) properties to be in the top 10, meaning the people in charge have obviously done something right by their audience over the last seven films.

The whole thing is lazy it has nothing to do with doing something right, just Michael bay it for the common. Who is president? Dont mean its right, just mean common people are not really good at thinking for themselves/ their own interest or thinking over anything thats not simplistic and he speaks at a 5th grade level. I remember when inception was hated purely because people didnt get it. Forget the visuals or soundtrack And it is misogynistic which is a very very lazy action. Being misogynistic is lazy because it requires no brain power its easy to do , its easier to use her this way because its the way its been done for decades. How about not bringing her back or not having a baby at all. The baby was used for something right? Was it to bring out some totally different side, emotion, make a story? What was the purpose of the baby, legit question.
@Kyman102
@Kyman102 7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't sound misogynistic in the sense of "Ha, gotta keep those women down where they belong!", but it does sound a bit misogynistic in, as you say, it's lazy as shit. Which, by reducing her down to the "Show up and dies tragically just to give Dom a baby", yeah, it IS kind of misogynistic. Sometimes it's not deliberately malevolent, it's just lazy. Sometimes that's all it takes.
@lotus-prince
@lotus-prince 7 жыл бұрын
"Don't get how killing her is misogynistic" It's not. It's the fact that they brought her back just to set up a baby's existence and then kill her, because there's no way that there could possibly be any other motivation for the male character. It's not quite the "women in fridges" trope, but it's kind of close.
@ApesAmongUs
@ApesAmongUs 7 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the baby is one thing and one thing only. As Brad said in the video, on the rap sheet for the character - Dom : 40. Even if they were honest and added a 10 to that number, it remains the same - he needs to grow up in a way that doesn't wreck the series. Having a kid is short hand for "adult" in movie speak. You can't have a "40" year-old who has nothing but cars and expect him to be considered a hero.
@Megramia288
@Megramia288 7 жыл бұрын
In this film it's not misogynistic. It's barely lazy. It was obvious but it wasn't a useless little tool to freeze women. (for the audience) She was killed for us to feel the same amount of hatred for the bad guys as dom. (For the writers and producers and such) This makes it where they dont have to fugure out how to make the baby work with the two women. There was no good way to introduce the baby (adult responsibility) and make everyone happy with the outcome for the women. (For he characters in the movie) This was the "I'm going to make a point of who has the power in the relationship and bunch you just fucked up all in one. Dom reacred the way Dom would react. Go calm and psycho until he COULD exact a revenge on them. Which when he kills the shooter guy he says it's for her. So it had purpose oast give a man a baby.

Yeah that bugged me too. Did they just forget Decker murdered Han? And I did take issue with the whole killing off the baby-mamma thing. It's like "Yey! No custody battles, no Letty having to deal with not being the mother of Doms first child or having his former lover being present in their lives! Easily resolved arc!" Might not go so far as to call it misogynistic. I guess it was kind of insulting to reduce this previously established competent character to the damsel in distress/baby mamma and then kill her off so unceremoniously. Sarah explained her situation well though. I can see where she's coming from. (So am I to understand Brad fucking hates John Wick?)

I respectfully disagree with Sarah that it was misogynistic or such. If so, then we could label many action films of the 80s & 90s who had a 'girlfriend' or 'wife' or 'daughter' just there to be taken, or taken & killed, or just 'killed and then the hero needs to get revenge' (or even somewhat newer films like Taken aka 'daughter there just to be taken, thus Liam Neeson kills a bunch of guys to get her'). Unoriginal? Sure. Cliche? Yeah. But in my opinion, not misogynistic. Although not sure why other commenters would attack her for the opinion. Not sure if other folks get that we're not always going to agree with 'opinions on a film'. Great job with the review. Long time watcher & fan. Still don't get why they would forgive Jason Statham who murdered one of their guys...regardless of 'saving a baby' or not. That seems like the weirder/more screwed up part of the script that makes zero sense.

Actual Lee, in the Borris Karloff film the mummy in question was a female, while Karloff himself portrayed her lover who'd been denied mummification for falling in love with someone above his station (the princess, and titular mummy). ;-)

Boris Karloff played Imhotep, the mummy who is discovered and brought back to life by the archaeologists. Imhotep was also the mummy Arnold Vosloo played in the 99 version.

I totally didn't get that from my viewing of it. I caught that the scroll had been buried with him so it couldn't be used to resurrect him, but hadn't caught that he'd actually been mummified.

Now, I have not seen this movie nor do I plan to, but when they were talking about the newborn baby, was the baby not born in a hospital? I ask because... is it actually possible to have a kid with only a middle and last name and no first name? How does that work with the birth certificate?

I understand where Sarah is coming from. For me, it's when they spend a large time developing a romance, and you're hoping they'll get together in the end, but not only does that not happen, but they either end up with different people (who sometimes aren't introduced until that point) or one of them dies tragically or sacrifices themselves. Anime does this ALL THE TIME. Just... stop that, goddammit.

I can totally get behind Sarah's issues with this movie, even if they wouldn't really bother me personally. And hey Brad, did it irritate you at all that John Wick introduced a dog into John Wick's life only to be killed off in front of John Wick just so that John Wick could get out of retirement and go back to being John Wick?

I think think this series has killed off more men than women for the angst of men, mostly Dom: His buddy in the first movie I think was mostly for Dom. His buddy from the first movie who came back in 5 and was killed off I think was also mostly for Dom. Gal Gadot's character, but that was for Han. Han, though that was duel pronged, in Tokyo Drift for Lucas Black's character and in Furious 7 for Dom. Now Elena for Dom.

I never picked up on that before as misogynistic I just considered it lazy writing. I'm trying to think of movies that treat fathers the same way and maybe not as abruptly but I feel like that happens across the board.

Question: So let's assume the premise of the baby and the mom dying thing is sexist. Is it still sexist if the writer didn't intend it that way? I don't know, I feel like alot of things people perceive as sexist, misogynist, etc are seen to be that way because of some kind of hatred or hidden bias or something. In the case of the mother dying here, isn't the point that it's sad because we didn't want her to die? She had the baby, and we want her to be able to rasie it, right? It's not like anyone's happy she died without raising her kid, or thought "Well at least she HAD the baby!". Anything that happens enough to be considered a trope, can be annoying in many ways, but I don't think the "sexist, misogynist" stuff applies in this case. It just sucks generally.

A lot of sexism is unintentional, I think. I've actually had a back and forth with someone on facebook who genuinely thought that catcalling wasn't catcalling if you're saying things like "Hey, beautiful," or something like that, as it's "just being nice." The person wasn't being empathetic - no one wants to hear this from randos on the street who just want to get into their pants.
@Nirvashicus
@Nirvashicus 7 жыл бұрын
I think that's a bit different a scenario though. Catcalling it a pretty direct personal situation between 2 people. Versus the movie, it's believed to be sexist because this happened, which is because of this, which reinforces this, because sexism. Which then means you have to accept all of those premises, and believe they all chain together perfectly like that on purpose, or that the writer should have known this long string of associations would eventually end at sexism. I don't know, I just think this one is a bit of a stretch.
@lotus-prince
@lotus-prince 7 жыл бұрын
That's a good point - the situations aren't quite alike. I meant, though, that someone doesn't have to realize they're being sexist in order to say or do a sexist thing, or portray something in a movie that comes off as sexist. The writer put Rodriguez in the movie just to bring up a baby's existence, and then get killed off in order to give the male character motivation. The fact that she died isn't sexist - it's the way that it was handled. Was the movie maker actively trying to be sexist? I highly doubt it. However, it ended up happening.
