As a huge fan of the books and the show when I was a kid, I loved this movie. To me, it felt like a movie-length episode of the show, with better effects.I saw so many great references! I'm a bit sad that they didn't make a reference to "One day at Horrorland" with that amusement park, but I just loved Slappy, he was awesome!

Just got back from the movie. I didn't read much Goosebumps growing up, but I thought that it was a perfectly serviceable and fun time for kids and families. It had a brisk pace, some great atmosphere, and a surprisingly heartfelt twist. I even thought that a lot of the jokes were great. My only problems with it were some spotty CGI and the ending was a tad hokey and didn't make logical sense. Still, I highly recommend it. On a side note, in regards to the dad joke: basically Champ sees his who he thinks is his father frozen by the aliens. He starts freaking out until he realizes that it isn't actually him. Champ then calms down and shrugs it off. The joke is that he was totally fine with someone else being frozen and suffering. Really surprised that he didn't get it.

Just got back from seeing the film and I'm actually perturbed by their comments. Doug and the gang said that it would have been much better if it didn't try to take itself seriously. Were they? From what I saw, it never took itself seriously, wasn't trying to be genuinely scary and had a ton of fun with the idea and characters. It was very, very self-aware, had very well-written humor and was an intelligent movie from start to finish.

just saw it on netflix and it went better than expected. i don't think this movie takes itself serious at ALL. I am saying this as a 90s kid from germany, whose contemporary critics are literally DESTROYING good shows like "Dark", so my ability to suffer must be pretty low, anecdotal to the fact that i grew up with german exploitation gore movies like "Schramm" by Jörg Buttgereit and "The german Chainsaw Massacre" by Christoph Schlingensief. But i really enjoyed Goosebumps, it had some over the top humor, it was cheesy, but not bad made at all. EDIT: they just said that the jokes were lame. i agree. but they were so intenseley lame, it was just hilarious making fun about how bad the jokes were. we have a saying in germany: "So Scheiße, dass es wieder gut ist" (so bad, it's actually good again).

There were some RL stone books that were pretty creepy. The one where the main girl has fire powers, the one about the sentient killer car, the Slappy books, the mystery one where the characters are killed off one by one and the main girl has amnesia. There are tons of fun or great RL Stein books and it was fun to meet the man and get a series signed by him

I'm sorry, but I disagree with your comments. You don't need to be a certain age to enjoy something. I was 10 when the books first came out and they captivated me immediately. I have all 62 of the original books and several of the off shoots like the 2000 series and the choose your own ending ones. I also enjoyed the show even though it butchered some of the books. As for the movie, I highly enjoyed it. It was written like a Goosebumps book and that is what I liked about it. It isn't anywhere near the best movie ever, but Jack Black was easily the star of the show and really drove the movie. Way better than Crimson Peak. Oh, and it feels like a 90s movie because it was made to be that way, which makes sense since the books were from the 90s. The kid who played Zach is from Agents of SHIELD.

Marcos Kain Well some people do need to be the right age. It's dependant on the person. Besides, they said they didn't like Goosebumps because they were allowed to read horror novels at a young age so it didn't scare them. They didn't just say "Oh we were too old for those books".

I think I just figured the difference between 80's and 90's kids. I grew up in the 90's and I loved movies like Jumanji and Small Soldiers, but I don't go around and act like they were a miracle of nature, like "what the hell are you doing watching Mad Max Fury Road? This Robin Williams shit is where it's at." No, they are my own nostalgia and mine only. However, kids from the 80's are the exact opposite, they act like it never got better than their era, in some cases their right (John Carpenter's The Thing, Ghostbusters) others not so much. For example, I've talked with certain people who laugh and brush off stuff I loved as a kid, yet turn around and say with a straight face that The Running Man and Top Gun still totally hold up.
@MarkyMatey

+JodoKastRules321 Oh good, so I'm not the only one who notices. Doug and Rob sing the praises of the '80s like they brought the second coming of Christ or something, and always bitch and moan about the '90s as if they were the collapse of western civilization. Heads up, guys, just because you snuck into R-rated movies about people's heads exploding every two seconds when you were in grade school and we didn't doesn't mean your generation is inherently superior to ours.
@japeth3213
@japeth3213 8 жыл бұрын
+JBWarner86 I might have come off a little stuffy, what I was trying to say is there are undeniably great things that came out of the 80's, but that's also true for any other decade. I'm missing where it was a decade where everything was great (like do you know how many people have said Spaceballs is Mel Brooks' best movie. Really? REALLY??)

Agreed. Worst part is, the media has noticed this and won't let it go. Guardians of the Galaxy, Pixels, Regular Show, and all the remakes of movies from the '80s... all these and more play the '80s card like their trump card. It's gotten old. It's hard having nostalgia for the 2000s...

From 1995 to 1998, I was the world's biggest Goosebumps fan - I read every book, I watched the show every week on FOX Kids, I collected the trading cards, I had the Pogs, for God's sake...and even back then, there were rumors that a movie might be in the works. I waited twenty years for this thing to be a reality. And obviously, when I wait that long for an event like this to happen, my expectations are going to be way too high to actually be met. Don't get me wrong, it absolutely has its moments. I love seeing all of R.L. Stine's monsters ganging up to attack the world. Slappy is appropriately creepy, and they even did a fine job taking antagonists like the lawn gnomes or the Abominable Snowman who weren't at all scary in the books and making them suitably threatening. Hell, even Jack Black does well as R.L. Stine - it's an odd casting choice, to be sure, but he's still pretty funny ("Let me tell you something about STEVE King, okay?"). But the rest of the cast is a big detriment. Zach is dull as a damp mop, and the monster-free first 25 minutes drag by at a snail's pace. Until the Goosebumps stuff kicks in, it's basically just a run-of-the-mill kids' movie that doesn't try very hard to make an identity for itself. And as much fun as it was to see so many classic Goosebumps creatures and villains wreaking havoc together, most of their rampages were pretty generic - you could have put any kind of monster in there and it would have been the same thing. Like, the Abominable Snowman may be more vicious in the movie than he was in the book, but he's still basically just an ape. What about his weakness for trail mix, or his ability to melt ice and snow by touching it? You coulda worked that in somehow. And I really wanted to see the protagonists of the books show up too - Carly Beth and Steve, Evan and Andy, Gabe and Sari, Billy and Sheena, all those guys. How great would it be to have the heroes turn to them for support, since they're the ones who fought these creatures in the books and know how to take them down? But like I said, I can't fault the movie too much just for not being the holy-crap-stop-the-world epic movie that I, a humongous Goosebumps dork, had been writing in my head for the last 20 years. It was far from perfect, but it was still pretty fun, and once it got past all that cliche teen movie crap at the beginning, it more or less quit taking itself seriously and just had a good time letting monsters wreck shit up. At the end of the day, it's a harmless little nostalgia trip for '90s kids like me.

I stayed away from them because I didn't like horror, but then everyone just kept talking about them so I picked up one of the books in my classroom bookshelf and started reading it. I couldn't even get through that one book. Not because it was too scary, but because I thought it was stupid. I'm glad to know I didn't miss much by reading that series or by not watching this movie.

Going from watching stuff on Channel Awesome to this, the comment section whiplash is confounding. Is this due to them bashing Goosebumps? I mean, I love Goosebumps and was scared by them as a kid, but I acknowledge that they don't like it because it was past their time.

I checked out a few Goosebumps books earlier this year while I was putting together a book collection. I really didn't dig all the fake-outs... I couldn't believe how often there's be a great build-up in an early chapter and then it would turn out to have been a dream...

+Joe Grace There actually was a Haunted Mask cameo, but it's extremely easy to miss...when they're being chased through the woods towards the end, one of the shots is of the monsters running towards the camera, and the girl wearing the haunted mask can be seen on the right. I'm amazed I caught it, lol. The camera cuts away pretty quickly, which was kinda annoying since I really wanted to see more of the monsters from the series be featured, rather than simply a few like Slappy, the werewolf, gnomes, and the mantis from Shock Street. Regarding the theme, I agree. I was thrilled when I found out Danny Elfman was doing the soundtrack. but pretty disappointed that he completely disregarded the theme from the TV series. Someone like Elfman should have had no trouble incorporating the theme throughout the score, so I can only imagine that legal/licensing issues prevented him from using it...or perhaps no one involved really cared to use it :/

Believe it or not, there's a reason Goosebumps is one of the most popular and successful book series of all time. The movie is intentionally celebratory of Goosebumps, because it's more than worthy of celebrating, and is loved by millions of people. I'm honestly really surprised to see Doug this way in this video, as he's not usually this ignorant and close-minded. The movie was definitely not creepy enough though, and for me, didn't come anywhere near close enough to capturing the feel of the books or the TV show. The idea is great, it just wasn't executed as well as it should have been. Not to mention the love story thrown in was horrendous and pandering way too much to the Twilight tweener crowd. Overall, it's certainly not horrible, but I hope they do better with the inevitable sequel.

I loved Goosebumps as a kid. Not so much the TV series, but I loved the books. I always thought of them as like a kids' version of the Twilight Zone. They weren't always scary, but they still usually had some interesting senarrio with an equally interesting twist ending. As for the movie, while I do kinda agree with these guys on some of the movie's humor, i still found it to be very entertaining. Now I just wish I still had some of my old books, but I sadly sold them all years ago.

Actually being a total wimp goosebumps not being scary was what drew me in as a child XD Same with the Michigan/American chillers books and a few other books. And yeah the books weren't adult level well written but for simple writing meant for elementary school kids the books had engaging stories and interesting ideas. It played a lot with typical childhood fears that I don't think a lot of scary kids' books do such as fear of the basement, fear of getting separated or loss from your parents/your group, fear of your parents not believing you about something, fear of weird creepy objects like lawn gnomes, etc., As for the movie, I went in expecting dumb fun and that's what I got. Also Slappy was the best part of that movie.

The Dummy ones I always thought did a good job. I mean if you think about there is a legit threat. Slappy is suppose to be a demonic spirit who lives inside a wooden dummy his purpose is to make people his own personal slaves and if you don't do what he wants he will try ruining your entire life and then he turns you into a dummy or he posses you. Slappy is also known to be violent I think I remember he abused the family dog in one of the books. Yeah Slappy left me nightmares for years.

kartoonfanatic Shit if I know. But it would probably have to be a pure cgi or animated film just caption the surreality of the drawings (since they were not drawn very realistically). The kind of smokey-like look as well as all the dripping blood effects all over Stephen Gammell's drawing could not be done in a realistic looking movie. Maybe something like Sin City; where everything is exaggerated with shadows. That's just my guess.

These guys don't realize that the consequences in the books were much higher than the series. They were a little more lenient with the scares with the TV series, but there's also the factor that watching a show or movie doesn't accurately convey the stress or thrills of reading the book and wondering if the protagonist was going to live or not. Stine's books are easy for kids to put themselves into, and that makes it scarier. Particularly one scary adaption of the horror genre was was one with a guy taking pictures of his family with an old camera from an abandoned house and seeing the car they were in totally wrecked--turns out the camera predicts bad future events. That book was terrifying.
