Thank you so much for your channel. I found you by accident. I have not quilted for over 11 years since losing our home and contents. I kept one box of scraps which was all I could grab. After finding this clip I got that box out and started my first quilt in a long time at 3am. Lots of tears and healing and I'm quilting it tomorrow and inspired to quilt again. Thank you so much x

Have you ever had your fabric so long that its integrity is questionable? My first job (oh, Lord) was working in the fabric department at Sears! I am now in my early 60s and I just pitched that perfectly cheerful pink, blue and white seersucker. WHAT was I thinking?

Our charity quilt group's process eliminates stash AND scrap guilt! First, all our fabric is donated, clearing out other quilters' stash stacks. We use the fabric until it's less than 2 1/2 inches wide (2 1/2 inch pieces are used for quilts such as in this video - with many different lengths, it's very scrappy!). Finally, all the trimmings and unused bits are brought to another sewing group that uses them as stuffing for dog beds they donate to the humane society.

I just started my first crumb quilt and am having a great time with it. I have a large stash...but NO guilt!! Makes me feel secure; kinda like having food in the pantry and plenty of toilet paper on hand when you know a big snow storm is coming! I encourage Simone to give it another try; once you learn to relax, it can be very freeing...unlike the structure of clothing construction. Thanks for video and all the quilting ideas; and your sense of humor!

Hi Angela. I just wanted to thank you for your videos, as you've inspired me to pick up quilting again. I learned many years ago and was a hand quilter, but then I veered off into crochet, knitting, and embroidery. The desire to sew masks for my community reignited my interest in quilting, and I found your channel as a result. Your cheerful enthusiasm has been a shot of creativity for me, and your permission to just quilt those quilt tops (instead of waiting until I'm "good" at it) has been so freeing. To celebrate my reunion with quilting, and my new goal of finally learning to machine quilt, I used the pattern in this video to make a "mask" quilt out of scraps from all the masks I've sewn. It's something comforting to come out of what has been a very unsteady and challenging time. I'm already about to sew on the binding of my second quilt, made up of very patriotic reds, whites, and blues, and Quilt #3 featuring my first experience with Ombre fabrics is in the planning stages. I don't think I'd be at this point without your encouragement. "Thank you" doesn't seem adequate enough to say how grateful I am to you for helping me find my love for quilting again, but know that my gratitude is sincere.

I'm a fabric hoarder for sure! I do save ALL my scraps too. I save them in a bag made of fabric. It's like a pillowcase and I call it my "Scrap Bag". When it's full enough, I sew the top closed and some lucky cat gets a new bed! We have the Happiest cats in town! I think I'll start donating some of these Scrap Pillows to the local Humane Society for their cats too. And dogs. I love this Fence Rail quilt! It's so pretty. It's a combination of both. I feel guilty/hate throwing away usable scraps. I'm trying to get better about cutting up the scraps at the end of a project, so they are ready when I want to "stash bust". As far as the amount of fabric I unintentionally "hoard", I blame that on the suggestions being given to quilters back in the 70's and 80's about creating a fabric stash for spur of the moment quilts required. Made sense to me at the time and I collected a lot of fabrics that I loved, but had no plan to use immediately. Now I have an insane fabric collection, dating back to the early 80's.

I just spent the last three days cutting two large totes of scraps into different size pre-cuts. I can probably make at least six if not more quilts. Will it stop me from buying more fabric? Silly question, of course not. I am a charter member of FA (fabrics anonymous) I felt such a sense of accomplishment until I discovered a wayward tote jam packed. Maybe when I get the feeling back in my fingers (from all of the cutting), I will begin again.

Let me know when you finish as I feel as though my scraps are having babies at night while I am sleeping - I have 5 totes of scraps to be whittled down to precut sizes and I have already emptied 6 various size totes of scrap fabric and of course I keep buying more - when do I say enough - I have a stack of tops to be quilted and a bedroom literally stacked under my cutting table and along every single inch of wall space available and then Angela helps with her 50% of coupon - what is a quilter to do - of course I had to order some!!!!

There, there, dear....don't feel bad that you only had two large totes of scraps. Not everybody can accumulate large totes of scraps in the teens and twenties. That being said....I'm always on the hunt for a good charity to dump, er...donate my carefully curated scraps.
@janeeve3996
@janeeve3996 5 жыл бұрын
Of course you will. This is because , on a serious note. there are always folk who need a charity quilt, but also because usin scraps creates scraps. You have placed yourself into a universe where however many scraps you use up there will always be new ones being created. I've just paused for breath after a 2 year 'use it up' blitz. Over 50 charity quilts later & off cuts are still winking at me. I'm going to have a year of finishing off projects for me & mine. Happily that will mean that when I return to the scrapping ones there'll be lots of fresh new scraps in the box(es) for when I return to Quilting for Donation. It's a fabric equivalent of a Perpetual Motion Machine!

FA must be very different from most addiction groups, as it doesn't seem to promote recovery from said addiction. I might look into joining since I have no intention to "recover," just to manage the symptoms.

It took me 2 years to finish a quilt I made for my nephew. The beautiful thing about quilting is if you abandon it you can pick it up later. Might take a little time to figure out where you left off but it can be done. I'm fixing my first quilt I made for my dad, and want to finish the one I fixed for my niece. My goal is to make a quilt for myself and my husband so this would be perfect. I love that you can make the scraps as short or long as you like and make it to size.

Beautiful quilt looks easy to cut and put together. I’m a newbee at quilting, I’m going to follow the pattern and sew it together. To see how it turns out. Free motion quilting it scares me. But I tried and finished my grandson’s lap quilt and finished it. It wasn’t perfect.. a lot of mistakes but I was determined and finished it. It was a simple curve witness a loop and it was fun. Thanks for making it sound so easy,

I became interested in sewing from my grandmother who sold (hand thread decorated) pillowcase sets for $25 in the 1950s and 1960s! She had waiting lists. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to learn how to do it from her before she passed. I did inherit five quilts she made. I know one was from the mid 1960s. I remember the Christmas I got a doll wrapped with an identical quilt. I had that for the longest time. My Mom added to my interest in quilting. But her interest only went as far as growing the stash. It finally came to the point where Dad and Mom started unloading Mom's UFOs and other 'projects in various directions. I was on the receiving end of some. My daughter DID brand me a hoarder. I told her 'no, you didn't see your Grandma's collection.' LOL

Wow! I love that quilt! I horde material and I have already made 6 quilt tops but I've never finish them with the batting and back and edging...I've never done any of that on a sewing machine. I learned to make quilts from my grandma, and she taught me to make them by hand.

Woah! The colors are GORGEOUS! I'm just getting ready to sew my first quilt after spending so long cutting all of the pieces for the pattern and I'm skeeeeerd! I don't think my OCD will ever allow me to free quilt but I will so be stitching the edges of all of my pieces. Can't wait to start. I've always wanted to quilt after watching my mom and great grandmother quilt.

Mine came from my mother-in-law. I sewed clothing. I never sewed quilts. She had two huge bags full of fabric that were almost quilts. Now my husband says I own a fabric store in my once guest room. I have totes and totes of different sized strips organized into bags of colors. White doesn’t exist in my color wheel. The more color the better.
