Oh the Holidays! The controller in my family tried to coerce me into joining them for Thanksgiving even though I said I did not want to. That’s when the turkey stuffing hit the fan so to speak. It turns out many of my boundaries were trying to be stepped on but I did not let that happen. I would have probably gone along with that before I learned what I was dealing with. I did however go to my grandsons birthday party even though the big “Bombastic” Narc sister would be there. I wasn’t going to let her destroy that for me. I was ready to guard myself and sure enough she tried to bait me several times. I dodged her bullets. Encouraged, to a far kinder way of being, of living. We are all so heavily impacted by our frankly narcissistic culture! Well, WE are impacting it back! Whew. Yay. Perhaps in doing this work, which at times is very, very difficult, we demonstrate a way of living that is not only of integrity, t can help lead to healing for our culture. Lord knows it needs it.

From researching other channels about going to court with a narcissist, the general advice is not to specifically call them out, but instead to say things deliberately that will cause them to have a negative reaction in front of the judge. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give on this subject. Love to Team Healthy, Dr C and Gus.

I led a men's discipleship and accountability group and was on a rotation to teach the adult Sunday school class we (my narcissistic, now ex wife and I) attended. We eventually moved, and began attending another (much smaller) church locally. There was no population to start a mens' group like I'd done before, and the adult Sunday school there was typically a video we'd watch, or a recorded audio tape from 20 years ago. So, I offered to lead an interactive Bible study in that adult group. It went very well, and many there seemed to appreciate the lessons and discussions. When that class ended, my wife went into overdrive to make sure I wouldn't be asked back. After the discard, I became unwanted, and was even told I wasn't welcome to volunteer for other activities. So, I left. I ended up across the street (in a bedroom-only rental by the week place) from a church I'd never heard of and would likely never have found, if I hadn't been forced out of the marital home by some legal manipulations. I was done with churchianity. But then .....

My (narcissistic ex) wife had a skill/talent when it came to, um, intimate relations. It was her way of love bombing. Her turn from covert brought about her accusations that I was only nice to “get some” but was otherwise a horrible person. So, I went from non-aggressive to disinterested. She freaked out. Triangulation is so hard when you don't know exactly who the flying monkeys, enablers and the narcissist are. As I am going about trying to discover that I have come to think of writing it all out and putting it front of each of them separately and leaving it there. They would all get the same letter. They each know what they did so then they don't need to try to cover up their actions by blaming each other. I have a right to be known for who I actually am. I don't know if it matters whether I know how or who. Thoughts? In seeing the capacity in each of us to become the narcissist and seeing the spectrum you hope that people will learn and grow.

When my father was dying I was told NOT tp tell anyone he had cancer. For my parents' generation that was something to be ashamed of. I think the loss of control was terrible for him. He had a urostomy bag. He resisted everything and was in denial till the end. He was such a difficult patient that they sent a psychologist to talk to him. I think she tried to open the conversation by asking how he felt about having a urostony bag. He was furious at the question and responded with "how would YOU like it?" Fair enough, I suppose. It was a silly question from a young psychology to a proud old man. But I suspect she wanted to get him talking, to get to the bottom of his resistance and loss of control. (Good luck with that, is what I thought). But I couldn't help reflecting on the loss of control I felt as a child as I lay on the floor at the bottom of the stairs soaked in my own urine a d crying desperately after one of his beatings.

A big hug to you! You were so intuned to that you reflected on your own memories while also recognizing the awkwardness the psychologist might have felt in that instance. List of the questions: 3:15 Q: My narcissist has terminal cancer but he can't tolerate giving me the reins. His lack of control causes him to rage. How do I deal with him? I'm a strong person but this is wearing on me. 13:04 Q: Why do people gang stalk? 16:07 Q: Do you think the behavior of gaslighting is perverse? 19:51 Q: Is it normal narcissistic behavior to feel entitled to sex? He always brings up how I don't do my duty as a wife by not doing it whenever he wants, even if it's my time of the month or I'm just not feeling it after a rage. 25:03 Many times when you're in a family that's dominated by a narcissist, you can have patterns that have been put into play over decades, maybe because that narcissistic individual, in their control, insists on dominance. But then someone new might come into the family scene as an in-law. That's what this next one's about. Q: How do you handle triangulation if the third person is your significant other? My father-in-law has put immense pressure on my wife her whole life to essentially be his little ‘do it all’ person. He's been doing this to my wife all her life but now that I've stepped into the picture, he's attempting to do the same thing to me. I finally put up some boundaries between the two of us, but he just hammers down on my wife more about what I'm doing. How am I going to respond to that? 31:44 Q: I'd appreciate your input on the differences between kindness and empathy. I have an old friend who constantly tells me of her random acts of kindness. For example, she might have helped a drunk out of the road. I thought that I'd have a shoulder to cry on when one of my rescue animals was attacked. Then she went on about how she rescued animals too. I told her there's no point to what she's saying. She thinks she's kind, that could be true, but she's uh unempathetic. I'd like your point of view on the differences. 34:50 Q: Why am I always surprised every time the narcissist does something narcissistic? 38:46 Q: How do I respond to a narcissist who immediately responds to my questions about her questionable behavior as MY insecurities. I've noticed this defensive response and immediate blame shifting and gaslighting, especially with questions that force her to be accountable or to explain her questionable behaviors or actions. 40:46 Q: Does a covert narcissist ever learn to tell the truth instead of the habit of lying? 42:15 Q: Does a narcissist actually feel love or is it just a craving for their supply?

I wonder if it may be useful to someone else, in the context of this discussion, to note here a behaviour of which I saw a lot. Unsatisfied with even just endlessly playing the victim (zeroth-order victimhood) I saw a lot of playing the victim with a deliberate, insistent belligerence, for the express purpose of trying to induce angry responses, against which they could then play the victim about that (first-order victimhood). Absent engagement, they'd then howl and thrash around and scream abuse about being the victim of not being the victim from playing the victim (second-order victimhood). Why I mention what I think of as "higher-order victimhood" is because it always struck me as truly insane, and others may have also seen something similar. So it might be something on which your expert analysis would be valuable.

I think sexual coordination is complex - a relationship can have an unspoken understanding (though it'd be better if it were explicitly spoken) on sex happening on some sort of regular basis. A key difference in having a relationship requirement (in this case on sex) is that if it's not being met then the person sadly closes the relationship. While a narcissist keeps the pretense of a relationship but keeps insisting things are done their way, holding attachment hostage to force their way of doing things (or more a feeling of attachment that others have but the narcissist doesn't feel themselves). Just saying 'If I don't want to then I don't' is ignoring whether the other person has a relationship requirement on the matter and whether there seemed to be an agreement (it just seeming to be this or that is why an actual verbal discussion would be better). I think it has its own issues when it's not recognized that the other person has a relationship requirement and it's not being met, then it's basically heading towards closing the relationship to just say that. It's fair to just want to close a relationship, but just saying 'Well I don't have to do anything and the relationship should just stay there' IMO possibly has some narcissistic traits in it itself.

There is no hope. If you must continue on in a friendship or marriage stick to public spaces for when an argument is inevitable and stick to decency. I’m a decent person and I’m not treated decently. Wash rinse repeat then retreat into self love until they are off their high horse.

Dr. Carter. I am going through a divorce / custody battle with my confirmed and tested Sociopathic wife. I need you to review the tests. She is claiming the tests were fraud. Please help. My 4.5 year old daughter is suffering. If you cannot, please refer me to someone who is an expert in NPD who can confirm her pathology. Me and my whole family have had very little contact with my daughter for 20 months.

Your story about the cats. I call a one upper. You tell them your story, and they always have another story to "one up" you. To get kudos for a supposedly kind act, instead of giving kudos to the person telling the story. It is different if you share a similar story, and say, " I get it " I empathize, have not walked in your shoes, but I would like to share my story with you.

My mother inappropriately shared sex stories with when I was a small child, how my dad wanted sex from her. The thing is, she was the one denying him everything. Not just sex, but all promises she made as a wife. I am going to take a break from this channel. Bye.

Some people on this channel go through hell, pain and turmoil. I didn't maybe only through naivity. After 4 years of Dr C i changed my attitude (wrongly thinking that nobody likes me, when i should have looked in peoples eyes and see pain)and it works. The lesson i learnt, the Narcs are what they are, sad people. I feel guilty not to have been able to protect my children from psychological turmoil. First born always suffers more. Come back soon.

@@trudismith9712 Thanks for your reply, but I genuinely don't see how it relates to what I said in the original comment. I think you were talking about something unrelated, but I could be wrong. Could you be more direct so that I can understand? Thanks. Because it almost sounds like you are trying to teach me that some people on this channel go through hell, pain and turmoil. It sounds like you don't think I have gone through hell, pain and turmoil. It sounds like you are trying to tell me what I need to do by saying it is what you have done. And quite frankly, all this vagueness really pisses me off -- it's so woman-like to beat around the bush with condescension disguised as helpfulness and compassion. So if I'm wrong, please correct me. I am giving you the chance to own your words, so that I don't have to make you eat your words.
