Hello. Nice videos. I’m a droid builder and a few of us have made a 1:1 scale Imperial Probe droid. A guy I work with made one for the Mandalorian and we put large servos to move the arms. These large prints are challenging but it’s worth it in the end if you have room for them.

Looking good! A wise plan to make things detachable for movement. I put my aluminum R2-D2 together in my basement...and at over 200 pounds, no way you could lug him up the basement stairs! Much easier to dismantle and re-assemble! Keep up the good work!

Maybe design and print up.some brackets with rare earth magnets in them to epoxy inside to hold together certain sections together so you can still break it down to move. Since its going to be a static display piece they should.do just fine.

Currently printing R2D2, got the dome done. Working on the body but ran into issues with ABS due to temperature causing warping. So I put that on hold to make a 3D printer cabinet for my Monoprice Maker Select V2. Also my Maker Select burned out and had to rebuild it with RAMPS and Marlin firmware.

this is an awesome project, thanks for sharing. Heres a possible "hindsight 20/20" idea: Could the whole head/body be made in two halves, front/back, and be easier to move around by having it relatively small in two dimensions, instead of having sides that are quite even. It might also make having it apart for ease of transport even when painted more palatable with one seam instead of rings.
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but making it in two halves would definitely be too long to make it up the stairs, so it would have to be in several more sections, which would eliminate much of the advantage of this approach. Also, as it is gravity kind of helps keep the sections together even without glue, but that wouldn't be the case if it was a front/back split. It's worth thinking about other possibilities, though.

I wonder, have you considered working with someone to make it into a mold? That's probably a lot more work, but could pay off if you could sell "Jabba Kits" similar to Stormtrooper armor kits. Plus then you'd have hundreds of Hutts floating around out there ruling the galaxy!
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
I think the number of people willing to make such a kit is extremely low, and it would be very difficult logistically. Anyway, in some sense I will actually be providing a kit to people in the form of the 3D model, which I am going to be releasing for free once I am done with the project.

Well as I mentioned in the first video, the proportions of the model are kind of off, with the head and torso a bit too big for the body. Since I scaled everything based on the face, the body is going to be somewhat smaller than it should be, but I can live with that

Should have made sectional parts with joints that could be held with pins and springs, then put a latex skin over it and have a reall puppet to use.
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
Well, that's way beyond my capabilities, but I have thought about what it would be like to use flexible filament instead of PLA. It could be pretty similar to the actual puppet, but there would be no way to really hide the seams between pieces.

I would like to make a trooper helmet for myself, probably a tad larger than normal, which size printer would I need to get to print it all at once?? S4 or smaller or larger? thanks for your videos and all the advice
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
For helmets I would probably recommend the S4 size just to give you more flexibility, although printing them all in one go is often not the best approach
@user-nd7rd8jo6h

Oh darn you could have printed these with a inward lip where you could then attach some cheapie magnets (the amount you'd need is what will give it the strength you need) that so you can attach the sections so it would be all nice and firm but you could then detach the sections like the head and such so you can transport easier... Oh well I guess lol
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 5 жыл бұрын
The Bear Minimum I considered magnets, but in the end the sections were too thin and didn’t fit together well enough to make it feasible. But I don’t have any need to transport it in reality - I would just have preferred that it wasn’t permanently stuck in the basement

I’m going to address this in the next video, but the head/torso section will be life size, but the total body length will end up being shorter than it should be due to the proportions of the 3D model being a bit off.

Is it possible to 3d print something that's articulated like an action figure ?
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
mrwhippy101 It is, although it can be kind of tricky. In my last video about the two small printers I gave an example of a robot that has moving arms and legs that prints all in one piece, or you can of course also design something that needs assembly. But this kind of design is beyond me I’m afraid

why do people mark videos down. never understood that. if you don't like just leave the video. anyways awesome video. you might want to stick an inner wooden from just to hold all the parts together like a lattice. as it would strengthen the build and give you something to move the parts with without having to touch the finished job. :) since last year i was working on a 64 part model of the moon i was working on for fdm printing. i now have resin printers so adapting the model for resin printing. sadly the resin model wont be as large as the fdm model due to build plate size. but still impressed. but also have to work on a way to key in parts. i was just using them sliced. but now have to work on a jigsaw kind of fitting. to make sure the parts are lined up correctly. would not have that much of a problem with the fdm. but resin printing. that's a new headache. :)

Hi there! I have a couple questions: 1) I love the idea of getting a grab bag containing random colored filament. Their selection of colors is gorgeous! But can I specify at MakerGeeks that I only want 1.75mm filament? I've wanted to get one but I'm worried they'll send me random diameters. 2) Do you know of any recycling programs one can ship their PLA waste to?
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
You specify the filament diameter and type (e.g. PLA) when ordering so you should always get something you can use. As for shipping waste in for recycling, I haven’t heard of anything like that, and I kind of think that it wouldn’t be cost effective in most cases.

@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question that I don't really have a good answer for. But each of the largish sections takes 15-20 hours to print, so I'm sure it's probably at least four or five hundred hours at this point, although I have generally been trying to run two printers at once to cut down on the actual time required.

I’m going to address this in detail in the next video, but the head/torso section (basically the part you can see at this point) is 100% life size. However, the total body length will end up being somewhat shorter than it should be due to the proportions of the 3D model being a bit off.
