I am a Muslim immigrant in Toronto, Canada dubbed "the most diverse city in the world". I came here 1 year, 8 months and 23 days ago, I mingled very quickly. I was admitted to the best university in the country and I am starting my first business in few months. I am still a Muslim but have had a fundamental paradigm shift and have corrected some of the teachings of Islam I inherited, and have enhanced some of the behaviour I don't find consistent with urban living. My point is, those refugees are going to find their way. If you're fearful of Muslims, wait for those frightened people to see the other side of the world and they'd learn, they'd correct the portion of their flawed beliefs once they see for themselves what westerners have accomplished through hard work and nobel principles. Believe me, no sane human would "bomb" a country that has sheltered them when they most needed it. I confidently say, I am now more loyal to Canada than the Muslim country I have inhabited 19 years.

Are there things we can do to stop these horrible things from happening? Probably. Does that mean we should treat every person like that as a criminal, forcing innocent people out of the country or physically assaulting them, simply for the actions of the minority? No. Absolutely not. Maybe I am naive in saying these people should be trusted. But I say it's better than the alternative. An alternative that breeds hatred and only leads to more hatred. Dear John Oliver, I am the child of two immigrants and I have many friends and family whom are not living here legally. I liked this segment very much, but I'd also like to point out the things I _didn't_ like from this message. My biggest problem is that you presented this issue largely using emotional appeal. The people whom are against immigration are people who are not concerned about the moral connotations of accepting or denying refugees or immigrants. To them, allowing immigrants enter their country is neither just nor unjust. So when you say "we have to do the right thing, we have to help war refugees," they often times don't see it as helping people in need, they see it more as economic drains on their economy. Most of my family are staunch liberals, but the thing I hate most about liberals is that they _refuse_ to present statistical data about immigration. They rely solely on emotional appeal to "help" immigrants, but the people whom need to be convinced, conservatives, look at immigration as an economic issue, not a moral one. So please, John Oliver, when you talk about immigrants and refugees, don't speak about how much we're helping people, *talk about how immigrants can help the hosting nation.* The people whom are against immigration can be swayed to help them, IF they are convinced that immigration is a benefit to their countries. Please use more statistics and studies in your upcoming presentations about immigration. Immigrants often times have lower crime rates and create jobs when they can open up businesses. They can pay taxes when given the opportunity. Please rely more on statistical data and logical appeal than emotional appeal. Thanks, - An immigrant born American

Not to mention the UK rape scandal where 1400 kids were raped. And i LOL at your second point, Tell that to Japan. More and more of these "service economy" jobs are becoming automated. Japan has robot waiters for fucks sakes. Artificial Intelligence is progressing at a fairly well paced as well. The only reason they want more immigrants is because there governments view it as a way to cover the hole in their Social Security programs down the line.

+Eddie "JaggSauce" Gluskin I don't think there's much of a difference in how open Europeans vs Americans are to critique. Both deserve criticism for certain things, like the attitude towards migrants. I am really mad that the refugees are so often portrayed as dangerous or even terrorists by the mainstream media. I live in an European country, and a big part of the population wanted to keep the refugees out (but it's slightly better now). You're saying that allowing refugees into Europe somehow gets rid of the good things in our nations/cultures. Can you elaborate on that? You also talk about why we have certain laws, but mention them as if they justify themselves. Not all laws are automatically good, even though a lot of them work well. The European countries won't become flooded by refugees. There's around 500 million people living in Europe, and how many refugees again? Also don't forget how multiple European countries have colonized other parts of the world a few centuries ago. They were basically migrants, and they often enslaved or killed the inhabitants there. It has made me think a bit different about being proud of my country.

The Ukrainian refugees are actual refugees fleeing a war. Not the "refugees" storming central europe instead of their neigbhouring countires because they get more social benefits there. Those were econamic refugees. Just look at the footage at 5:54 99% were men, not woman and children Ukrainian refugees are mostly woman and children! Those are the real refugees. I am not saying that men shouldn´t flee, but it is and was suspicious that mostly men between 15 and 30 came and said that they were younger to get more benefits. They should have been those that should have stayed and defended their land. And now we have a subculture in europe were muslims can´t handle our western values so they fight our system to be like the one they were fleeing. Edit: Grammar

I'm German, and I can't agree with everything John Oliver said in this segment. The economic and demographic argument of accepting immigrants are well known. Also, Germans are atypically happy to accept at least a certain number of the Syrian refugees since almost all of us have refugees in our families - people that fled from what is now Poland, people displaced by the second world war, later people that fled the GDR. There is great sympathy for the people affected by war. However, it is not true that there are only upsides for the hosting country. In the short term, it has become pretty difficult to get doctor's appointments because the migrants put an additional strain on our health system. We have an existing population of muslims from different ethnic groups and we already see the first squabbles and fights between these groups in Germany. Lastly, while Germany will experience a gradual demographic and cultural change anyway - a slow influx of people from different cultures is unavoidable and not particularly threatening - just dropping a giant group of newcomers with very different cultural attitudes in our country all at once is a challenge of gargantuan proportions. In my daily life, I see many examples of refugees who make a point of being friendly and respectful towards the locals and vice versa, and this is hopeful. However, I think Germany can take a maximum of slightly less than a million all told if we want any hope of integrating most of them in the medium term. And this influx will put a disproportional strain on the poorer population of Germany, who will see most of them arrive in their neighbourhoods.

***** I take your point about Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan who host far more people, but cultural similarity does play a role - at least Jordan and Lebanon's populations speak the same language as the Syrians. And I blame the unnecessary war waged by the so called axis of the willing in Iraq for the current situation. Germany, however, does not bomb Iraq (tried to find a source, this did not happen), and will only send supporting troops (surveillance aircraft), not bombers, to Syria. Edit: We probably sold weapons to most of the different parties involved in the conflict, so I don't see Germany as blameless, but we're pretty slow to deploy the army. Yes, especially the US and the UK (also Poland...) should do more to help the refugees after destabilising the area. I still maintain, for practical reasons, it would not be a good idea for Germany to take in even more refugees. We could not offer them jobs or decent housing in the short term and this would create a problem down the line.

Some of the cities on the baltic coast, such as Gdánsk (Danzig) were founded by Germans and went back and forth between Germany, Poland and Russia for centuries. I have no investment in the location of the current or former borders (my granddad had first a Russian,then a Polish, then a German passport and spoke all three of those languages), but it is a fact that there were German people born in parts of what was then the German Reich, e.g. the Baltic coast, that found themselves on Polish territory after the war I take it you are Polish.

You might be used to watch entertainment or vlogs and, in this case, it is suitable to dislike the video, criticize on the comments and go on with your life. You should check the sources, verify if the facts are correct and, if they are not, you can hate. Getting pissed because facts do not back up your prejudices really doesn't change much. +The Naked Ant This is not journalism this is satirical / political comedy and it has little to do with the facts because it is satirical. Trying to pin the problems of a country upon others outside of the country does not make this "journalism" and if anything it shows the underlying foundation of humans in general. As an example, I own this nice house and it has all my stuff in it, some nice rooms, some of my valuables and there you are, as the example, a complete stranger coming up to my house seeking food, lodging, money and safety. The humanity inside of me should be warm, welcoming and accommodate you but the realist inside of me knows that I know absolutely nothing about you -- I don't know if you're nice, I don't know if you're here to steal my food, I don't even know if you're a peaceful and loving person who just needs some help. You scale this up to a country basis and it still reflects the general consensus of the average person except in country/government form. Now ... we all know that it is horrible in those war torn places and for myself I feel bad watching innocent kids that have seen gut-wrenching horror in their countries HOWEVER those people are seeking refuge in my or your country. This is not to be taken lightly and that's why I think you calling this journalism is wrong because all it focuses on is the refugee in this 'perfect idealized' version of what John Oliver is presenting as opinion. These people seeking refuge in any country are doing exactly that "Seeking refuge" -- you may not get it, you may be turned away or you may get what is done/needed and get in but the bottom line is being a refugee is not a right on the planet -- it is something horrible no one should have to go thru. If Country A doesn't want Muslims in their country then that is their right to put that forth before you seek refuge in said country -- it may be hateful or spiteful towards Muslims but that is their right -- it's THEIR Country. You can criticize or dislike the way these European countries are handling the situation but it is their right to do so as they please because their people built said countries up to their present condition and they can be picky if they wish or open armed to those people.

Question here: How does an influx of lower-wage immigrants raise wages for everyone else and not doing the exact opposite? What is the incentive for employers to actually raise wages once they have so many people willing to work for less? Am I missing something or what?
@orlind9 жыл бұрын
+Tia Peteva Influxes of lower-wage immigrants taking those low wage jobs leads to more spending as they will spend a large portion of their incomes. Depending on the industry and sector, there is a lack of people willing to fill certain occupations. Middle-class citizens generally don't want to take these occupations and even lower-wage citizens turn down some of these occupations. And forget about higher-wage or wealthy people; they stay rich because they generally never spend enough to stimulate an economy in almost ever sense. Its how the rich stay rich in most respects. Eventually, these influxes of extra people and increased spending leads to increased demand for various public and private services, leading to more open positions in higher paying occupations from that increased spending. Let's not forget, maybe G20 nations are not producing enough children and many of them are becoming geriatric nations unable to support themselves due to various policies. You don't need to look further than Japan with its xenophobia or the disastrous One-Child Policy in China (which they finally cancelled).
@mrredlines49049 жыл бұрын
+Tia Peteva It doesn't work in practice. In areas of the US where Mexican immigrants tend to cluster, the unemployment rates are twice the national average and yes big businesses do lay people off, hire migrants and pay them extremely low wages. I moved out of my home state at 18 because it was so fucking difficult to get a job. Leftists that live nowhere near the problem will continue to spew buzzwords and tell you how it should work in theory but it doesn't.
@orlind9 жыл бұрын
Mr Redlines The reasons why it doesn't work in the US go beyond what I mentioned. Policy in the US since the early 80s has enfeebled the majority of working people in the US and given too much power to the rich. Left and Right don't matter since both have done damage in their own ways. This has created a country that currently has one of the biggest social and economic inequalities in the world. In other countries, where programs and funding exists to facilitate immigration and social growth, what I already described does in fact work. I, in fact, live in an area where this works fine and former refugees have in fact strengthened the economy and even have immigrants in high levels of national government.
@UniDocs_Mahapushpa_Cyavana9 жыл бұрын
+Tia Peteva Low wage earning employees all require resources to survive. This buying creates more jobs. As the low income workers cannot afford much, their demand for cheap goods incentives business to make things cheaper as they can reliably get more sales. In order to facilitate demand new companies will be created (probably from the migrants, but either way it's one new businessman and a productive asset) A more weird benefit is tat bigger systems are more efficient, so increasing the numbers increases per capita productivity. More importantly the migrants are unlikely to be very skilled or educated meaning their jobs will be different than everyone else's meaning competition will be very low (more people can replace car parts does not means artists are cheaper), hence only the number of jobs at the bottom end will increase. This will scale the more skilled jobs as a direct result of a business producing more (there are more consumers and workers now). To put it simply once the limit for businesses growth was workers. Now they have many of those, so they need more of every other staff to manage them. This increases demand for educated/skilled workers (their numbers have not increased remember).Therefore with supply and demand rules, the wages for the more skilled employees must go up. To visualise it with animals, let's say you need equal pigs and chickens for Bacon and eggs. Suddenly you get twice as many chickens, but demand for Bacon and eggs increases in proportion (migrants need to eat). Suddenly you need twice as many pigs, which you get from the farmers market as well to meet demand, but the price of chickens and pigs are not directly linked. When everyone does this the farmers market runs low so the last ones are sold at a higher price. P.S. This is not the perfect answer and it relies on the host country being pro-education (otherwise everyone's chickens).
@madams67969 жыл бұрын
+Tia Peteva First, NOT every migrant/refugee is "lower wage" earner..many are educated and professionally skilled...however, they pay taxes and contribute to the market system by purchasing "stuff"....that contributes overall to a society where the average age is higher and more and more folks are closing in on retirement age. Younger workers are essential to maintain their powerhouse economy...that is why immigration is essential...that is why America truly needs new motivated workers...of course US employment benefits are not as attractive as European so they are not interested in being the next Walmart slave wage workers....

These countries have a serious crisis of providing for their own people unlike many countries like Germany, France and Britain. Also, Europe did play a role in destabilizing not just Syria but Asia as a whole and I don't know why you think destabilizing an entire region for decades with endless neo-colonialist wars does not make most European countries culpable. Sure, few neutral countries like Switzerland might not be politically culpable but the majority of European countries very much are and it's frankly disturbing how you want to deny that culpability and make it all about 'those not so good Arab countries not taking other Arab refugees' when the reality is far more complex and nuance on that front and a lot more sinister on the part of Americans and their European allies.

@@aamnahere6250 Yes, 100%! I'm from Sweden and we're a tiny country who took in wayyyyy too many refugees (not that taking in many refugees is an issue, but we were not able to provide them with housing!) because other European countries did not carry their weight. As you said, countries in the middle-east take in millions of refugees, despite the other crises they're dealing with. Europe is an extremely developed and privileged continent, so the focus should definitely be on US and not on the neighbouring middle-eastern countries who are already doing so much.

@casperheiberg30679 жыл бұрын
+Alex Spec Yeah we do, also, by coincidence, we've just passed the date of the 10 year "anniversairy" of exactly those drawings being published for the first time. Yup. It's that long ago. And while more than 90 per cent of danish muslims doesn't not wan't to see the drawings reptinted, more then 60 per cent of etnic danish people do. Just to stand up for that freedom of speech. We've been making fun of our own queen, jesus, god, priests, the pope, buddha, and litterally all of the religions of the world. And very few ever burned a flag as a result of that. Until we tried making fun of Islam. That, one billion narrow minded people, couldn't handle. Even though we have tried again - and again, to explain that we make fun of litterally everything, and by not making fun of islam, we'd be singling them out, making it seem more racist/hateful, than if we treated them like we treat everyone else. That is the true curse of the muslim though. Thinking you're being treated differently when you actually aren't.

When discussing the migrant crises there so many issues that needs to be considered. Unfortunately, this week Last Week tonight failed to talk about some major issues. The criticism against the Balkan states and Hungary is valid but historically there have been a lot of religious wars in that area and that might still influence the people. Germany deserves a lot of credit for leading the way with humanitarian motives. My concern in my home nation of Sweden is this in September between 25000-30000 refugees arrived and towards the end between 1200-1500 every day and we are not prepared for these numbers. Yes we can argue that European nations are becoming more racist but I don`t really believe that the majority supports those views. Also, no one is prepared to deal with the real problem, the wars. Humanity I see has a responsibility to act decisively against these terror groups but since no western nation has been attacked no one seems to give a shit. Lastly a question? How many refugees are allowed to enter Russia or USA these are big, rich and powerful nations they should be able to do more I think?
@waywardchronicler60009 жыл бұрын
+TheStone To be fair to John, its rather hard to address all the nuances of the situation in under 20 min. Still, I see your points. Ultimately, though, if we do nothing, these people will die. I find it very hard to justify letting that happen under any circumstance. Would one reject Jews fleeing from the holocaust, citing "cultural heritage" or some other nationalistic nonsense?
@apoorvswarup9 жыл бұрын
+TheStone you see the refugees (don't know how apt that definition is considering they can pretty much roam across Europe without any regard for laws) have been surprisingly given the absolute right to decide which country they go to (which is absurd if one considers the dublin agreement) Cut your benefits policy (like denmark) and you will see their numbers automatically go down. Its not whether these refugees are allowed to enter the US or Russia (am pretty sure no one would want to enter Russia willingly) but whether they themselves want to go there! The cultural and lingual integration aspects depend and I am not going dwell on that too much but I do hope the swedish government ensures that ghettos like rosengard aren't created and that the immigrants are truly integrated into the society.
@hudrowportnof40589 жыл бұрын
+Wayward Chronicler agreed. i think people should realize that people's personalities are created by their environment. everyone who's talking about how bad the behaviour of these people are should remember that, if we were born there, we would probably be their exact replica. while i do think this crisis is more complicated than what this episode talks about, people seem to miss the basic message of this episode, that we shouldn't leave these people to simply die. we at least owe that much as fellow human beings.
@andiefront98619 жыл бұрын
+TheStone I am 100% with you, this is not a topic to be discussed in less than 20 minutes. I now see a lot of other videos from a different perspective. I often thought that the US has some redicilous rules but maybe this was just one side of the medal - just as this video? Don't get me wrong, John Oliver is not my compensational-news or -panel show but this show was just very partial and did not make fun of real bad decisions. Like the budget cut in the refugee-camps around syria. The EU cut the budget from already-ridiculous 150 Mio to 75 Mio which was leading to starvation there. Hawkeye Bear I don't have any issues with the Portugese in my country. That was just to show him that his people are economic migrants in other countries too. Also I'm really wondering where you're getting your numbers from. Because, according to the BBC and the International organisation for migration, only 350k-400k refugees crossed into Europe in the first 8 months of 2015. If Switzerland with 8m population can take in 250k portugese (plus another 1.75m other foreigners), then Europe with 500m people can take in half a million Syrians altogether. We just have to distribute them evenly. Meaning the UK and Eastern European countries should take in their fair share and not leave everything to Germany and Sweden.

Ugh, I'm really disappointed with John this time. It always has to be the extremes of both sides (Left and Right) fighting it out and all sense is lost. The comments certainly show that, and unfortunately this video is also very one sided. I would have loved if John had shown the more sensible sides of the situation since it is incredibly complex. Yes Europe definitely needs to do more, but so does the rest of the world. I'm from Canada and it's unfair to put this all on Europe when there are many other large, wealthy countries around the world that could help. At the same time, we can still be cautious and orderly without being racist. You can't just open all the borders because the rush would cause chaos. Instead all countries should speed up their immigration process, while still following the system and doing it properly. Is this meant to be the be all, end all answer? Of course not. I'm just saying this crisis is far more complex than just simply open or shut all borders.

+Link Almighty yes other countries can do more, and they should do more, I agree with you on that. Especially the US. Not to justify Europe, but what about Saudi Arabia and other neighboring rich Islamic countries? Why aren't they welcoming any refugees, who are additionally of the same religion and similar culture as theirs? What's their excuse? No one is talking about that.
@andiebarrow36069 жыл бұрын
+Edith Esquivel To be fair, I don't think anyone in their right mind would want to emigrate to Saudi Arabia--the constant human rights abuses of its government are rather notorious. And for a lot of these refugees (especially Syrian refugees), European culture is actually a lot more similar to what they're used to than, say, Iraqi culture. The whole idea that Islam is super different from other religions is largely a Western political construct.
@EdithEsquivel9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Barrow I didn't know their culture was so different. It can't be, when they share Arabic at least. I know Islam is not such a different religion (I listen to Tapestry, CBC radio), but I mentioned it because it is normal for people among the same religious tradition to offer help, and even if Saudi Arabia and other rich Islamic countries are difficult, they would not be as difficult as war, I pressume, being wealthy and stable countries. Saudi Arabia: 0 / Kuwait: 0 / Qatar: 0 / Bahrain: 0 / United Arab Emirates: 250,000 They are collectively known as the Persian Gulf states, and even though they share a language and the Arabian Peninsula with Syria, the Gulf nations are among the few nations that haven't participated in the 1951 U.N. treaty on refugees, they are not legally obliged. However, morally, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have an obligation to help victims of a war in which those nations have been involved through their financial support of rebel groups that have fought Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. My opinion.
@moe23669 жыл бұрын
+Edith Esquivel Islam could vary greatly in its denominations, just think of the differences between Catholicism and Mormanism. Sunni and Shi'ates have divided Iraq even before the US entered the war with them. While the Persian countries should accept refugees, European countries should as well. Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey alone are taking in 4 million; Syrians have become 1/4th of the Turkish population, just think about that for a second. Finally, Europe and the US are the ones who worsened the Civil war in Syria as they have funded the Syrian rebels, not persian countries (Although Saudi Arabia has). My theory is that these Persian countries feel like they had no hand in this and those responsible, should accept the refugees.
@EdithEsquivel9 жыл бұрын
+Zonda _ Saudi Arabia and Qatar are responsible too, as I mentioned above.

While realizing this is comedy program, this was an incredibly biased take on the situation that ignored many key aspects of this current invasion of Europe by so-called “refugees” such as the fact that only about a third are fleeing the civil war in Syria, the vast majority are unaccompanied young men, and that rape is endemic in the camps where they’re being temporarily housed. Counter to the charming young girl in the wheelchair, maybe John should have shown the video of a Muslim boy gleefully making a throat slitting gesture to the camera while being filmed at a train station. He might also have mentioned that ISIS has boasted that it has infiltrated the migrants with “thousands” of its fighters.
@smitetheunholy61799 жыл бұрын

+Drunk Bastard the name of the vid pls
@MahatmaAgrobiznes9 жыл бұрын
+Martin Rayner Well first of all if this is an invasion, where are their tanks? It's not anything close to an invasion and calling it like this is just a disgusting propaganda. And, if this was an invasion, then what would be the Polish migration to Germany and UK? A genocide? Because it's far larger than this so-called "invasion". Just because you're opposed to accepting the migrants doesn't allow you say anything you want., some words are acceptable while some are not, you may want to watch the beginning of this video once again to find out why. For example, I believe it's acceptable to say that many of those young men should be sent back or not accepted, if their only motivation is economy. But it's not acceptable to call them animals or anything like that. Only about a half (and not a third, you may check this out even on Wikipedia in the article "european migrant crisis") are fleeing the war in Syria because - guess what - there are other civil wars and even other problems (like dictatorships) in the world. Does "Afghanistan" ring a bell? There are some videos of boys making throat gestures, there are even videos of people throwing stones and rioting. However, they are overwhelmed by videos showing migrants... simply not doing those things. In fact, not doing anything dangerous, just behaving normally. So John's program was not biased, it just focused on the general situation, not the exceptions, and was based on facts, not speculations.

+Ozymandias and that's why there is a certain process in place to identify negative elements in the group and eliminate them before good people are let into the country. In the meantime, countries and institutions that are trying to help are being ridiculed because it takes a long time to process milions of refugees. Also, if you are escaping violence and death, you are migrating to the closest country where there is no such threat. Not across the half of the world to the country with the best social benefits system :/
@stp52x9 жыл бұрын
hrindak Well Germany doesn't have the best social benefits system. It has the best economy which can support such a large influx of people. If millions of people ran to the nearest country, they'd die of starvation and poverty because they wouldn't have the resources to sustain them. These people are expecting to remain there for a long time, the situation in the middle east is not going to recover any time soon.
