He looks and sounds terrific! This man fought just about every top heavyweight of his time and is still in tremendous shape. Thanks for many great memories Mike and thank you to the man who did and posted this interview.

My father worked in the rice mills in West Sacramento lifting 100lb rice sacks all day and then after work he would go to the ring and spar with Heavyweight contender Stan Ward at the Oak Park athletic center. Stan Ward was prepping for his first fight with Mike Weaver. My father then went to the Weaver camp to spar Weaver and then come back and inform Stan Ward to his skill set, capabilities and weaknesses. My father told me he was giving Weaver a boxing lesson and thought this would be an easy fight for Ward until BOOM a body shot that had pops reeling. My dad realized right then and there Mike Weaver had some cannon power he was awkward and cumbersome but when you think your kicking hiss ass out of nowhere he can flatten you. My dad relayed the information to Stan and told him to be careful this guy is powerful and hits hard. Stan won the first fight but had welts on his head and did not look like the winner. Weaver was given a rematch and Stan Ward could not answer the bell for the 9th round in the second fight. Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth. Mike Tyson.

No doubt that Iron Mike was a better fighter…Mike Weaver was a great boxer, but he lost a couple of big fights.Weaver also served 4 years in the Marine Corp🇺🇸✊

Underrated heavyweight in his era. Loved watching this guy.

Good to see him looking so well, after a long up and down career. A magnificently conditioned athlete yet I always wondered if his heart was really in the fight game.

I've been curious about this guy since 1979. Thank you.
@charternicholson99333 жыл бұрын
He was the most underrated fighter probably because of his record in the HW division in the 80's. Fought everyone and anyone as most of the top fighters did in those days. The promoters and TV networks actually put aside differences to get these together. Weaver was jobbed on both Dokes fights.

Mike was an honest fighter who gave his all in the ring ...he was never the greatest but his battles against Larry Holmes...gerrie coetzee...John Tate... Mike dokes 2 ....Carl William's and pinklon Thomas were all memorable fights. I always respected weaver as a heavyweight who in his prime could give any heavyweight a tough fight. Mike did occasionally get caught cold but a focused Mike weaver was a very good heavyweight.

Weaver was one of the most underrated punchers in the history of the heavyweight division. I would argue that outside of Earnie Shavers, Weaver was the most dangerous one punch knockout artist in heavyweight history.
@pjtheory3 жыл бұрын
@Larry Barry My commentary had nothing to do with a mythical matchup between Weaver and Tyson. Again, my point of emphasis was that Weaver was arguably the greatest one punch knockout artist with BOTH hands in heavyweight history.
@pjtheory3 жыл бұрын
@Larry Barry That would be a nightmare matchup for Weaver. Tyson was such a fast starter whereas Weaver took time to get into the flow of the fight, so IMO, Tyson would probably knockout Weaver in the early rounds.

I saw Weaver at the bank in Diamond Bar when he was champ. He lived in "The Country" exclusive area of Diamond Bar next to Pomona where he went to high school.

much respect to weaver. seems like a great personality. real, and honest, chilled out and don't take things too seriously, reminds me of my brother. lol. toughest fight? all the ones that got out of the first round. lol thats awesome if thats what he said.

You look good despite the fights ! Best wishes Mike from a fan in Britain.
I do admire the Ali's the Sugar Ray's and the Henry Armstrong's but in a way, I admire and respect guys like Mike Weaver more, for the way he overcame adversity, bad starts, bad judge decisions, etc. God bless you, Mike.

Yes definitely, but the right hand was good too, as he ko'd Coetzee with the right...

I think Weaver is underappreciated. Out of all the WBA Champions only he defended the title twice actually. Beyond that both Dokes fights were bullshit. He gave a prime Thomas all he could handle before being KO'd. Much respect

Mike Weaver was he only boxer I saw who could stand up straight stiffed legged and throw a punch at very close and restricted distance and knock you out. Talk about natural one punch power. Yes he could be slow and some times very frustrating to watch at times but he was always dangerous !! And him and Norton had the best body’s in the heavyweight division. They could fight with big bulging muscles 💪🏼

Wow thanks for this. Strong South African connections here. Weaver beat our Gerrie Coetzee, who later went on to beat Dokes for the championship. Manuel Ortiz, who was Jimmy's neighbour who got him interested in boxing, was a former world bantamweight champion. He lost the championship to our Vic Toweel, who was South Africa's first ever world champion (and the only one for 23 years, until Arnold Taylor knocked our Romero Anaya for the WBA bantamweight championship in 1973(.

Actually it was his fight against Larry Holmes before that that got him the Tate fight. Larry was knocking people out left and right and Mike Weaver a relative unknown to the public was thought to be the next early rounds knock out. Mike made it to the 11th Rd surprising many.
