For those who don't know: Concrete does not dry, which would be water evaporating from the mix. Concrete cures. This is a chemical reaction very much like the way epoxy cures. If there isn't enough cement in the mix or too much water or not enough water or the temperature is too high or too low, the concrete will not cure. Then you get the crumbling mess we see at the beginning of this video. People that work with concrete should know this and take measures to ensure the concrete cures properly. One way this mess could happen is that the concrete was in the mixer too long and they added water so that they could still pour it. What they are supposed to do is dump the old concrete out and get a new batch. This kind of cost cutting could cause the entire structure to fail. It's not worth it.

Interesting. There's a lot of things I don't know about. Thank you for the information. I knew concrete delivery is a timed event, but didn't know the specifics. Who makes the decision to discard a load of concrete? I am so curious to know what caused the delay here. Was it traffic? Was it the site manager? Were other trades running behind?

@@daniel_wilkinson Too bad I wasn't on the site, so I don't know why they did what they did. Adding too much water is only one possible cause. If they were pouring in winter and didn't bother to keep the concrete warm enough to cure, the result would be the same. As for who makes the decision? that would usually be the site supervisor, but it depends on the way that contractor operates. If nobody has the authority to reject a delivery, there's a serious problem.

Well I wish I would've read your comment yesterday before I filled a hole in the side of my foundation. Couldn't read the water to mix ratio so I just winged it. While putting it up it was too wet and hard to work with.. got it done, but I expect I'll have another chance a year or two from now to redo it.. :(

That house must be in Burlington. I know in mid 80s I drove ready mix truck, and when in Burlington, they wanted that concrete wet enough to find its own level when pouring the walls of houses. In fact, my father drove ready mix truck for few years and he told us this, he went into an area where going in that morning he had maneuver around a moving truck that was at a house. he went and poured the footing and returned to plant for another load, and driving down the same street he had been on before, he drives past the place where the moving truck had been and it had sank 8 feet, the foundation gave out afteer the people had put there stuff in, They had unloaded the moving truck, went to get something to eat and came back and found that this had happened

How is it even possible that this happened, and the tests clearly showed that it was not good and they are still not proven right and it is resolved under warranty for the homeowners, it gives me goosebumps how houses were built without even an ounce of decency or interest and this shows once again that the warranty is worthless and they really do everything to avoid having to pay, why give a warranty if you can never rely on it anyway and you might as well not have a warranty at all, they never reimburse anyway.

In commercial construction, clients don't rely on guarantees and warranties alone. Rather they insist on surety bonds and ongoing 3rd party inspections throughout the project.

Scrap the Ontario New Home Warranty Program, instead the builder must warranty their work for a period of 5 years. If the builder is unwilling to fix it, the law should state that the purchaser can, hire a 3rd party to fix it, then sue the builder for the repair costs.

Just for fun: A MPa is a mega pascal which measures pressure it is an equivalent to one newton/square meter. A pascal is a very small unit on the human scale , this is why in this case it is MPa, mega pascals or millions of pascals. To put it in perspective the average barometric pressure is 1 atmosphere=14.696 pounds per square inch =760 Torr=760mm of mercury. which is 101300 pascals. It takes a lot of pascals to measure civil engineering concepts. Fun stuff ay?

The underlying issue is lack of criminal penalties for bad home builders and contractors. On the flipside, copying a movie is considered criminal. Shows how corrupt the system is. No one is really watching out for consumers in many jurisdictions.

The builder obviously either didnt get the tests done when the foundation was poured or ignored it. If this was discovered and acted on right after the pour was done it would of been a lot less effort and cost to fix. This has negatively affected the value of the home as there basement now has a much smaller square footage.

I've worked in concrete construction all my life, starting with digging foundation and pouring floors then into concrete forms depending on the size of foundation 5 bar and 6 bar, eventually ending my career in driving concrete mixer. I have never had this issue with failing concrete I was taught old school. worst enemies of concrete is water and oxygen. I've delivered concrete to contractors pouring walls at a 7 to 8 slump because they want the concrete to flow easier that's a big mistake, guys pouring floors like soup because they don't have the man power and want to cheap out

@@jabressdolath7657 If its not defamation, then you could also be morally if not legally responsible for the harrasment/death threats/etc that would certainly ensue. What happens a lot with these kinds of contractors is they finish bunch of houses, "close" down the company, but re start it up immediately with a name change and with the owner now there wife or friend officially. Makes it impossible to actually keep track of whos actually running what company.

Too much risk and not the focus of the show. But even if he did, wouldn't change much, since builders operate under shell companies. They just close down and reopen under a new name. This practice isn't just limited to builders, but other types of businesses too, such as movers. There's far less consumer protections than many realize.

The inspector and the builder are definitely in the wrong line of work. Hope they get sued for all they are worth. Sounds like they should be criminally charged as well. That foundation could,collapse which will destroy the house and somebody could be hurt or worse killed.
@ronbennett7885
@ronbennett7885 3 ай бұрын
Criminal penalties are rare. That's much of the problem right there. Builders seek to delay until the warranty expires. Many builders have little to no assets to go after. Often shell companies set up for each development. It's buyer beware and don't rely on guarantees nor the government to protect them.

TBH don’t like the fix. They could have used treated lumber that’s made for building foundations. Its six not eight inches. It could have been run with conduit. Spray foam to seal against water and deal with insulation. Plus, after you frame those block walls for finish, which with a wood foundation you don’t need to do, you’ve lost a foot rather than 2 inches. Wood have gone a different way.

@terencemerritt basically some holmes in Meford had to be demolished and some had extential repais. These were brand new holmes. Mike didn't build the houses but promoted the builder. And was paid to promote the builder. People bought these houses because Mike Holmes name was attached to the builder. Mike claims that no one bought his home inspection on these houses. He always bashes other builders and tells people to do due diligence and look up the contractors' references or anything you can find on them. Yet here is a contractor that has closed because of the lawsuit on the houses. People have lost their holmes or have had to pay out of pocket to rebuild them from the foundation up again, and Mike isn't doing a thing to help out. He is just letting the courts decide. He is two-faced. Watch his shows he never does anywork he just bashes contractors. He's an actor!
