Mike did a good job. I miss being around wreckers. Makes me think of my grandfather (he was a wrecker operator until he developed cancer and died in 2001). I spent a lot of time with him in his wrecker. Thanks for showing videos of what you guys do. If I ever make it your way I'll make it a point to stop in and say hello.

@ around 5 mins in, I love how you dont just "you should probably pull nose in", but instead go through the whole how and why thinking analysis with him to help train not just his decisions, but the whole thought process, which makes it easier for him to adjust to similar but different situations in the future. This is one reason I love your videos, you dont just do your thing, you explain it as you do it.
@juliestevens69315 жыл бұрын
Exactly - not just teaching what to do, but HOW to think about what to do. Small but critical differentiation. Knowing HOW to think teaches you to think outside the box. Look at what needs to be done, how many different ways the job can be done, what do you have available to do the job, how can you use what you have to do what needs to be done. That thought process works AMAZING well in any situation.

An informative video! As a former flatbed operator, I hauled 'piggy-back' several times .... What we would've given for a rotator in those days for safe loading/role-playing!! LOL!!! You're a good instructor. Again, another great video.... Thank you for it, and God's Blessings.

yeah, using a rotator looks a hell of a lot easier / quicker / safer than using a loading ramp

I was taught the gears, first with 3 shifts then 4. I love listening to the REMS. The engine tells me when it is ready to move up a notch. I can follow you to 6, after that you lose me. My kids loved the VW Bug. I could run up the rubber band and GO from stop. Beating the folks who teased us drivers being too slow on the take off. Oh, yes, safely, too.

@ Ron Pratt Sorry for the length. I've been watching your videos now for about 3 or a little over 3 years. I remember either the first or second video I ever watched, I saw Mike and I commented on how he didn't really seem to know what he was doing. I remember you responding that he was new to the trade and that you saw potential in him. You were definitely right. I've watched both Mike and Talon grow and become more knowledgeable. I think Mike did an excellent job here and yes he may have been a little nervous but who wouldn't? He was definitely more calm than I would've been. So in summary, great job to Mike and I hope to see him on the controls more often soon. Last but not least, I love how Talon managed to sneak over there and get some impromptu training of his own. Lol

Way to go Ron ! This is how I got my Hands on Training , with a Senior Certified Operator , Trained on Boom and Cable Boom and on Tandem and Tridem , Don't get nervous Mike we all started out the same way , with practice you be shifting without the clutch as Ron said you can speed shift just tuning into the sound if the Engine , The RPMs will tune right in . Driver training on bigger trucks and Training on Booms cause basically a Rotator is a Cable Boom , my Certification came with lots of practice and guidence . Just Remember Mike work at your own pace and take all the practice and guidence you can get , and pay attention to a great teacher willing to give the chance to improve your skills . Great job to both you !

Ouch. Well Mike don't feel to bad we have all been in your position at a point in our career. Looked like he was nervous and shifting to fast. I had a bad habbit of trying to use the clutch when I shifted so my buddy tied my left foot to the kick panel on the left side so I couldn't use it. WOW! Did I ever learn a ton today! I often have your videos running "in the background" and do a rewind when I identify something I missed. This time I put everything else on 'hold' and watched it start to finish - twice. The part I probably appreciated most was the part where you gave over the reins - when you said he had to run it or he wouldn't learn. I encountered the same thing when I had to let my trainees take control of backing up and editing a huge data base for their companies...ya gotta let 'em try and fly ;^}

Good Morning Mr. Ron. Great video! You should be teaching managers from everywhere how to train people! Mike did awesome especially considering he had the pressure of everyone there watching and he knew his every move would be watched by thousands of KZbin peeps. I also think you were exceptionally cool considering the cost of the tator letting other people train on it and drive it, that must be tough trusting your baby to others. It speaks volumes about the character of Mike and Talon both, that you trust them with that kind of responsibility, because that kind of equipment things can get deadly in the blink of an eye if you mess up. Great Job Mike, and don't sweat the driving/shifting of the tator, trucks are like women they all a bit finnicky like to be caressed slightly differently. You could put a exact copy of the tator next to each other and both drive/shift completely different. I look forward to seeing more of the guys taking a bigger role in the business and giving you more time to enjoy life. None of us are getting any younger, I am going on 55 and can't believe the difference in the way I used to do things even 10 years ago, the older I get the faster my body ages😔

Fantastic job, Mike!!! I am so happy that you have Ron for a teacher/boss, as he's patient, kind, and gentle with you. Learning is the hardest thing, but even I learned something today. The job you do, along with Talon and Ron is a tough job. Working the "smaller" trucks is easier than the Tator. That beast has so many bells and whistles to help you do your job. I'm glad that the power lines don't go across your holding yard, as that would make it tougher to get things done. lol Keep up the great work, Ron, and may you and Mike have many more training sessions, so Mike can replace you in the near future some weekends. lol God bless and keep you all safe. P.S. Ron.. make sure you get your "fishing" license for those pesky swimming cars.. lol oh and look into a "hunting" license for those vehicles that are "lost" in the woods. Don't want you to get into trouble. hahahahahaha 😲😂😁😉💕🤭🐸

2:40 Mike, if it doesn't want to go into gear, you usually just need to tap the throttle a little to bring the RPM's up. And don't worry, we ALL ground a few gears when we were learning, I know I did...

As a young'n just learning the farm trucks, my dad showed me that he could shift it without using the clutch. As soon as I was cut loose in the field, I would shift up and down through the gears only touching the gas pedal. And yup, ground 'em a bit in the process.
