This is a serious challenge that is not meant to be a slap in the face or a quick moment of owning atheists. I genuinely believe that mockery, sarcasm, and caricaturizing can hinder clear thinking. It's not that all mockery is wrong. It's not that all sarcasm is wrong. But, they can easily become a way of expressing confirmation bias. In the case of Ricky Gervais, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and a number of other influential atheists, it certainly is. I rarely recognize the version of Christianity that these guys argue against. Yet, these guys have come to formulate or otherwise represent the thinking of countless atheists and agnostics in the current generation, even if those people don't realize their criticisms trace back to that sort of thinking.

You're missing the point. Let's say you're an atheist who believes in evolution and I'm a Christian but I don't believe in evolution and we're going to talk to a tribe of people that never heard of Jesus and never heard of evolution. I'm trying to tell them about Jesus and you're sending that mocking telling them look how stupid this man is he thinks Jesus walked on water.. that might shut down the people listening to my argument. So from that perspective it might not matter what I say logical or not from that point on. And then it's your turn to talk about evolution and I said look at him he thinks his ancestors were lizards that walked on water.. and from that point on from their perspective whatever you say is Ludacris they won't even listen to your argument. PS just to clarify I believe 100% that organisms evolve but I don't believe our ancestors were sea creatures .

It doesn't change the fact that most atheists out there use mockery and arrogance as an argument, not something actually useful for a debate, it just shows that they are not mature enough to actually address a point of view contrary to theirs, and then they claim that Christians are delusional extremists.

@@BeepBoop211-fr5sv let's be real here. There are very few credible atheists that are interested in the argument. There's nothing to lose on either side, Pascal's wager. It's very important to understand your own beliefs and respect others. If an argument is made it best be backed up. I've heard great arguments on the religious side, maybe nothing that would cause me to convert, but still interesting. I'll live and I'll die, it's inevitable. If I can live a life of learning and provide a clear path for my children, whether or not they choose religion, at least I gave them the opportunity to learn, and hopefully they ask themselves why and have an answer.

@@triggered8556 epistemology is the study of knowledge. A justification is a way of showing something is right Asking to justify a science is, imo, odd at best. What exactly are you asking me to justify? The reason for the existence of that science? The basic theories of that science? The methods by which those theories are tested? Now, I'm going to assume you meant to ask where we get knowledge if not from God. And to that question I'll say: we just observed the world around us. What we didn't get from observing the world we got from other people observing the world and then telling us what they learnt. Let me ask this: how do you know what something tastes like? Did God come down to tell you "hey this grape is sweet" or did you eat a grape and realised it was sweet?

@@catrinoiuandrei4624 I didn’t mention anything about God. Epistemology is more than just a science, it’s a massive philosophical category. Justification in epistemology is generally defined as justified true belief + the gettier problem. I’m asking you what your justification for knowledge itself. You seem to take an empiricist approach which I think is self defeating because it relies on a whole multitude of presuppositions that are unjustified. On top of that, the proposition: all knowledge comes through sense data, isn’t itself found in sense data. How do you justify a transcendental, universal, abstract category like logic?

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. I can't believe this guy doesn't think that atheists have weighed the evidence thoughtfully. That we don't think logically. That we haven't taken the time to understand anything about it. In fact we often turn to sarcasm and scoffing because we have thought so much about it and when we express our thinking to a Christian, we are never listened to in any way that says "hey you got a point, but here's why I think you're wrong about that." Instead we get "if you don't believe and refuse to believe in God, then you are not worth my time." In fact we find your way of thinking about the same subject more irrational than calling water a powdered substance, because Christians can't put together the inconsistencies of what they are even saying when they talk about God!(mainly because they themselves haven't really asked the hard questions or are so delusional that the inconsistencies makes sense to them.)

I understand fully what you mean, as a kid raised in North Carolina, I lived in both the city parts and then the REALLY country parts, and the Christians in the really country parts were usually how your described, aka not fully happy people lol! I also used to be atheist and went around always talking about how we are a random act in a random universe. Though the more I look at everything, we are intelligently designed, have you seen that there are motors in side of tiny organisms that help them move, and with a pretty much 100% conversion from chemical to mechanical movement? We created motors ourselves before seeing these perfectly made one, just crazy. In the Bible it says that Amen is the "true Witness, the Origin, Beginning, Author of God's Creation." Amen literally means to believe in and stand firm in. How man we say that something didn't create us when we ourselves are imperfect creators? That spark, that single Amen, that belief that He wanted to Be, is what is God, that belief that He wants something better for us because in reality He came into an empty void and still wanted to not be alone. Let's just be happy, mankind, like He wanted!

Totally agree, the Christians that argue with hate in their heart are not obeying Christ. We should speak to others in love, understanding we all have different backgrounds that influence why we believe what we believe. I’d encourage anyone reading this comment to read about Descartes, a French mathematician and philosopher who realized he had to unlearn everything he knew so that he could build up knowledge that couldn’t be shaken. He built off of simple truths such as 2+2=4, and that on some level, we are conscience and exist. its really amazing the way he logically proves certain key beliefs of humanity, and worked up to the existence of God.

You have to literally make god up and resort to fallacious reasoning to put forth any god whereas atheism doesn't try to do that and simply dismiss and reject the claims because they don't comport with reality or what can actually be observed. Now, atheists just reject the claim of god/magic, we do not claim there is NO gods because we have no evidences for that. Atheists just say "no" to a positive claim about god "There is a god!!" @@roxannehoff2889 True, it's one of his arguments, but it's a weak one. He's assuming the God that has already intervened with and revealed Himself to mankind, wouldn't do it again if mankind had their memory wiped, in which case Christianity would be discovered once again just as "science" would. Not to mention some populations don't have the modern sciences, so his argument also assumes mankind wouldn't live as those populations do to this day. The fact ppl actually accept his argument as valid shows this is all about bias and not at all about critical thinking. "It shares my conclusion, and demeans the opposition, count me in." I've heard comedians compare christians and other religious groups to bedwetters. They belittle what they don't understand instead of looking into it with an open mind. You'd almost think they hate God. I think it comes down to they hate there being a moral law standard so they debunk as much as what they can with 'science' that wasn't here measuring life's creation. Go ahead atheist, tell me why rape and genocide are wrong if survival of the fittest is grand for the animal kingdom. In the case if Ricky Gervais, yes, he's a comedian. But if you watch the most prominent atheist debating Christians, for example Christopher Hitchens, and others, many times their response is being sarcastic and not engaging logically with a point made by the other side. Tbh, the most interesting debates are the ones that atheist actually respond to the points made and give a solid argumentation instead of "you believe in skydaddy, you don't know what you're talking about". Both sides engaging honestly make the discussion better and advances knowledge. One side, no matter which one, using sarcasm and whatnot just stalls progress.

@@MatheusBoarini Sarcasm aside. A true athiest and a devout religious person can NEVER find an equal ground. It's not just about willingness to understand. The closest they can get is acceptance of each others existence. At its very core, religion is unscientific. There may be some truths to the historical evidence corresponding with several holy books. But other than that, religion relies on belief. Science relies on repeatability and certainty. As an agnostic athiest myself. I find the scientific method a more satisfying explanation for human history, rather than a creationist story where earth is a couple thousand years old. But also, because science cannot currently explain the beginning of the universe and the origin of life. I'm inclined to believe that a creator of some kind "formed the universe".

@@MrMeasaftw Atheism and agnosticism have no justification that provides the pre conditions necessary for induction. The uniformity in nature. Your universe is ungoverned and is time and chance acting on matter and everything we see was rendered by accident. The proof of Gods existence is that without him you can’t prove anything. God is the precondition of intelligibility of all lines of proof, trying to prove things assumes a certain view of the universe of how men know what they know and how to live their lives. Only the Christian worldview can make sense of those assumptions. Proof itself requires the existence of God to be intelligent. Bertrand Russell, one of the most famous atheists in history. He wrote about this problem in a book called problems in philosophy. He said “we need a basis for the uniformity in nature”. Everything we do is based on the uniformity in nature. Science, logic, language. Give me a basis for the future being like the past? If you tell me it always has been thats a refutation of itself. I’m not asking you what the past was. I’m asking how do we know the future will be like the past. The moment you appeal to the past to do that, you’re refuting yourself. If an atheist says it always has been reply so you live by faith? His arguments are tailored to win over people like you who don't understand how an actual argument is formed, presented and challenged.. If the person is honest they will attempt to refute the strongest possible form of the opposing argument (this is known as an Ironman, the opposite of a strawman) - most atheists cherry-pick out of context info from various religions and refute those specific things (even though when read in-context, the referenced information means something entirely different) Edit: to be fair, the cherry-picking isn't unique to atheist; the sad reality is most people know they are right and construct an argument that proves their presuppositions, whether atheist or theist, most humans are dishonest and self-serving - anyone who claims otherwise is either naive or purposefully deceiving you in order to make manipulation easier

If we treat religion differently than we treat politics, philosophy, science, etc. religious discourse will not grow and atheistic discourse won’t grow. Giving special privilege to these things only stifles progress. 3rd. Theism affects me directly. If the Christian consensus is that people who don’t believe in their God will go to hell, then that means I will go too. That line of thinking dehumanizes me, because they think that I will deserve it or I sent myself there. So aside from stifling progress, Christians also with their ideology oppresses whoever doesn’t believe in their God. Or seen the transcripts from the Scopes "Monkey" trial from almost a century ago about teaching evolution in schools. Oh, you can't teach that in school, you'll be damaging the children, it's a banned subject. Sound familiar? Wait until it happens again in Florida. At any rate William Jennings Bryan was one of the most respected Biblical scholars around, and Clarence Darrow just absolutely destroyed him on the witness stand during the trial. Every single thing Bryan could come up with as the "appropriate" and accepted interpretation of Biblical passages, Darrow could come up with a thoroughly documented contradiction of it. Essentially the Bible itself was put on trial and found guilty and worthless. If you hear preachers bemoaning how people "lost their way" in the 20th century and stopped following the Church doctrines, the Scopes trial is ground zero for where it started happening because people were learning how to read and write as never before and there was a huge increase in critical thinking that led people away from religion. Bryan was so shaken by this he died only a few days after the trial ended.

@ItsKarlDude I've seen a few, he never comes close to doing anything other than trying to talk in a manner that confuses or obscures you into submission. Craig's point is immediately disarmed by saying ok well if the universe is so fine tuned it demands an intelligent creator than who created the creator. If God either always existed or popped into existence on his own then why not the universe? Atleast we have evidence pointing us to how the universe may have started but the humility to say we don't know at this point, the investigation isn't over.
@maow9240
@maow9240 Жыл бұрын
@Shazbot that's not really a question that disarms Craig point but rather a show of ignorance of the subject at hand. The universe itself shows that it hasn't always existed as even science shows the universe will inevitably die. Meaning the universe will end and that which ends would have to have a beginning otherwise you cannot say the subject in question "always existed" that also handles the "popped into existence problem" Now to the creator. Time is a constraint within our universe the creator of something is not within their creation before the creation was created so time being a part of this universe would be created along with this universe and the creator is outside of that creation. So logically speaking the creator of time is outside of time otherwise time would have existed before it was created which is illogical. So the creator would not just pop into existence as that refers to the existence of time thus has always existed this universe will end and that which has an end has a beginning so this universe hasn't always existed. You really need to think about the whole picture instead of just what sounds like a logically made argument.

@charlesbruneski9670 Жыл бұрын
@Axel Andersson Yes. I'm glad to share with someone who's willing to listen. This will be a flyover summary, since there's so much and I don't know which points you might want further detail on. Cosmology: fine tuning of the constants. There are more than a dozen constants of nature, and forces, and ratios between them that have to be tuned to mind numbing precision for life to be possible. The starting conditions also need to be precisely set for life and this is independent of the constants. Abiogenesis: you can't get the right chemicals for life in either the right form, right concentrations or right purity to self assemble life. If you could, it still wouldn't self assemble. You can't get soups of enough amino acids or nucleic acids, and If you could they can only make short chains that still don't link properly. The chances that something could self assemble are also mind numbing small. Evolution: even if you get life started it won't go anywhere. It looked promising when Darwin first proposed the theory and they thought life was a bag of chemicals that easily performed its function. Now we know that the distance between functional genes is so vast that all the existence of life would be hard pressed to form a couple new genes. With every new advance in how to synthesize some portion of the process, the goal posts get further away. Reliability of the Bible: skeptics like Bart Ehrman like to point out how many discrepancies there are between copies of the books, but they're usually deceptive. If you know how to do textual criticism, you see just how much better the Bible is than any other historical work. Ehrman himself has admitted it when he's pressed for what it actually points to. We have more texts, closer to the events than almost anything else, and can have great confidence in what the text originally was. Most discrepancies are meaningless, (spelling mistakes and minor grammatical errors where we still know what the text said and it matches the other texts.) The number of meaningful discrepancies is small and there are none that affect a Major Christian doctrine. Mike Winger has a number of videos on this. Skeptics objections: there are many things over the years that were absolutely positively put forward as definitive errors in the Bible. Did you know the Hittites and Nabateans, never existed? The poll of Bethesda, and the portico of the temple were pure fabrications. The gospels were written much too late to be based on eyewitness testimony. And terms used for rulers at the time, places, and even entire governors must have been invented by people unfamiliar with government or customs at the time. It really was a horribly contradictory book if you listened to the skeptics... until new evidence and writings from more excavations came in. And in dozens of places the writers of the Bible were right, and the skeptics wrong. But they never update their skepticism. Most skeptics today have to admit most of the case of Jesus's life including the empty tomb, because even first century skeptics admitted that, and the only explanation from the first century to that is the worst one. They had to admit the facts that everyone who was still alive knew. The gospels read like eyewitness accounts and corroborate each other everywhere in undefined ways. I can't even do it justice in a summary. It would be better for discussion if you were to give me your best objections and see how many of them are based on misconceptions, false premises, or deceptive statements by skeptics.

I never understand sweeping statements like these - the claim is that there isn't "any evidence". It's not that there is some weak evidence but see it's weak sauce or there is evidence that is better explained in some other way - it's that there's none, zip, nada evidence. So, if there is no evidence, then there are 2 implications 1. That theists are all cuckoo 2. The observations of anything out there is so easily explained by natural processes that there is simply no need for any other explanations. Neither of these implications can be argued in an airtight manner. Ergo, we must reach the conclusion that people who make such a sweeping claim are the real cuckoos.

Major difference between believing in 1 God or no God. It's not about the number of deities.... But the possiblity of any deity at all, ever. It's like I'm a mother of ten children vs mother of one, oh look someone who's not a mother at all. Who has more in common the two women with children or the one who has none. Numerically you might say 1 and 0 will be more alike but I don't 0 will understand the lack of sleep, fears of leaving your child with a stranger or any other the things we as mother's endure. Atheist is anti, against the notion of God. The bible says the fools says in his heart there is no God... How much worse for someone who promotes it publicly. Pray for Ricky and I don't mean that in a pompous way I mean literally for all those who doubt. We all need Jesus and when you realise that he is your answer things will change in your life forever. Atheists see life as a singular closed book for the story you write about yourself but christians see Jesus as access to the library a world of information and a future you can rely on. @@Lady_de_Lis I dunno if that analogy works. It may, but I’m gonna have to respectfully respond with this: Your issue seems to be that a theist can’t be an atheist. And of course on the surface that makes perfect sense. Their polar opposite terms. However, Gervais’ point is merely a perfect demonstration of how a Christian theist, for example, is in fact holding the same position as the atheist for any number of gods who many other people believe in just as strongly as you do yours, like Allah. In other words, you don’t believe in allah, and neither do I. We’re both atheists with regard to Allah. So it’s fair to say that you, presumably a Christian, are an atheist in regard to Allah, because you hold the same position as the atheist in regard to Allah. The atheist, just goes one further and includes your’s too.
@DM-dk7js

@@Lady_de_Lis so again, I know your issue is simply with a theist being called an atheist. It in the surface is nonsensical. All of you who missed the point whilst trying to define the word sarcasm. What he's saying is that the atheistic argument actually has very little substance when you take away all of their sarcastic remarks because most atheists just play on the fact that it is human nature not to believe anything outside of the five senses. So in a debate, atheists often make snide remarks ridiculing the perceived improbability of God's existence (which is in fact very probable when you apply logic and reason). These remarks get the most laughter and audience response, making it appear as though they've completely destroyed the opposition's when they really haven't.
