I’m right there with you on the 50lb braid! It’s definitely enough to keep the biggest bass pinned and also cast WAY better than 65lb. I do think it can matter way brand of braid you use for where you are fishing. I’m 100% Berkley x9.

I’m a jackall frog guy most of time but I did just order some more savage gear frogs yesterday from TW cause I’ve been catching them pretty good on the gill color. Was getting short strike on my gavocho so I switched to my savage gear trimmed the skirts and was getting better hook up ratio With that smaller profile frog. If I could frog fish all year I would. You the man Mikey.

Super video, My "go to" is 50 braid with a launch frog. Thank you.
@kevinfitzpatrick90713 жыл бұрын
Another frog tip I found very helpful from Cliff Crochet is when skipping a frog try it on 80lb braid, it makes the skipping much easier and mistakes much less severe. The 80lb is not about anything but being thicker and not over running as much. I can still launch my frog to FN Mars on the 80lb too.
@fishonthebrain64713 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the 50 pound test. I find the frog works a lot better and has more movement on 50 than 65.
@andyd8343 жыл бұрын
Hey Mikey I have a question. How important do you think the actual side to side walk is with a frog? Reason I ask is I suck at walking one and fishing from a kayak my line will wrap around vegetation which really makes it hard to walk.
@dougp99753 жыл бұрын
Same here. Tough in a kayak. Too much line rests on the water. I do ok with a frog but always wonder if not walking the frog is keeping me away from more bites.
@ScuffedEngineer3 жыл бұрын
In open water and submergent vegetation it probably matters, in big mats where it really can't walk, it doesn't.

I love 20lb braid for frogs, I’ve never broken it on a hook set and since it’s diameter is so much more thin than 50-60lb braid it cuts through lilly pads and grass like nobody’s business
@dhjhawk3 жыл бұрын
Awesome video! Hooksets are also a little different with frogs. Learned that the hard way. I'd like to hear if/how you guys modify your frogs or if you fish them straight out of the package.

I like to take a pair of pliers and bend the hooks out a little, feel it helps with the hook set

Agreed, you never need more than 50lb braid, ever! I ran an offshore charter boat where we targeted yellowfin tuna and have caught tuna up to 100 lbs on 60 lb mono. No one is breaking 50lb braid on a bass. Your knot can fail bu5 you’re not actually breaking the line

Would like to see a more in depth vid as to how he works the frog... fast, slow? Does it depend solely on the conditions?
@tylorarcher84393 жыл бұрын
Bait presentation varies depending on the fish in the body of water. Sometimes moving quick will get a reaction strike and sometimes a typical pop pop real cadence will work. Before you move on to a new bait try different retrieving speeds and methods. Most people only work a frog one way and get frustrated when it’s not getting hit, try a few things before you put it down.

One tip I learned a bunch of years ago. Try braiding your frog legs. This gives your frog a completely different look on the water.
@mikefurness15983 жыл бұрын
Regardless of manufacturer of the Frog I almost always have three frogs with me. A white belly a black belly and a yellow belly and variations of those three. I'm going to try the brown frog now and that may make the 4th. Like you guys I don't care what the topside looks like for the most part the fish don't see that. The other thing that I do I almost always been the hook points straight-up about 1/8 of an inch. It seems that the hooks are always placed in such a way that they are hidden in the body of the Frog and I think that causes a loss of bites that actually get to the kayak.
@jimmied28383 жыл бұрын
I don't swing for the fences so 50 is as high as I'll go. I think it also helps that I'm not a big guy.
@bassclass59983 жыл бұрын
I've had great luck with scum frogs. They slam them up here Michigan. The ONLY problem I see with them is the body is so soft that the hooks end up in the body after about 10-15 good fish. I'd take a scum frog over a lunker hunt any day of the week. Plus they're less money. The live target hollow body field mouse is a killer! Just far to expensive!
@jackstein54863 жыл бұрын
I agree Mike, Jacob cannot break 50 with quality fresh line and a good palomar knot. Also I did not care for the scum frog launch frog that JT was promoting last year, bought a few colors and was suoer disappointed and now I see JT is promoting the Snagproof redesigned Bobby's frog.

Structure is strictly what the bottom consists of, rock ,sand, ledges, sandbars, shellbeds. Cover is what you bring the frog through, grass, brush, shade. So for a pro to say his frog comes through structure really well makes me think of the famous Joe Biden quote....C'MON MAN
