CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After Mildred (Joan Crawford) and Bert (Bruce Bennett) get into an argument, they decide to separate and Mildred kicks him out of the house.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for her bravura portrayal of the titular heroine in Mildred Pierce. The original James M. Cain novel concerns a wife and mother who works her way to financial security to provide a rosy future for her beloved daughter, but encounters difficulties and tragedies along the way. Ranald McDougall's screenplay tones down the sexual content, enhancing its film noir value by adding a sordid murder. The film opens with oily lounge lizard Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) being pumped full of bullets. Croaking out the name "Mildred", he collapses and dies. Both the police and the audience are led to believe that the murderer is chain-restaurant entrepreneur Mildred Pierce (Crawford), who takes the time to relate some of her sordid history. As the flashback begins, we see Mildred unhappily married to philandering Bert Pierce (Bruce Bennett). She divorces him, keeping custody of her two beloved daughters, Veda (Ann Blyth) and Kay (Jo Anne Marlowe). To keep oldest daughter Veda in comparative luxury, Mildred ends up taking a waitressing position at a local restaurant. With the help of slimy real estate agent Wally Fay (Jack Carson), she eventually buys her own establishment, which grows into a chain of restaurants throughout Southern California. Meanwhile, Mildred smothers Veda in affection and creature comforts. She goes so far as to enter into a loveless marriage with the wealthy Monty Beragon in order to improve her social standing; Beragon repays the favor by living the life of a layabout playboy, much to Mildred's dismay -- and possible financial ruin.

Its amazing just watching her going to the fridge to get that milk and pour in 2 cups of flour and mix it all into a blend. i mean it's all acting but it's so natural and real.

Bruce Bennett (also known by his given name of Harold Herman Brix) was a silver medalist in the 1928 Olympic Games (shot put) and was physically active well into his nineties. He even went skydiving at the age of 96 near Lake Tahoe. He made it to 100, having passed away from complications of a broken hip in 2007.

What I like in Joan's performance is that she didn't overact in the situation. She could've exaggerate her role but she done so elegantly.

I agree! You sense the quiet resentment she harbors for everyone and yet you can tell what a gentle soul she is. All she wants is to make people happy, but she can't stand up for herself because she wasn't raised to.

I would have hired you. This is my favorite movie to show people who claim that black and white movies are boring and corny. It's so good! Personally, the murder frame story enhances it.

@@juliebrehove6817 I personally think it has faults that new movies wouldn't have. The worst I think its when Mildred's youngest daughter dies. She goes out with his father and suddenly she get pneumonia and dies the same day with nothing leading up to the scene. One minute she is talking in bed and a few seconds the doctor says "sorry I couldn't save her", Then the same night the Mildred tell her lover "oh by the way my daughter died" and proceeds to kiss him as if nothing happened. 0 emotion. I really don't know how this movie won Oscars I guess the standards were much lower back then.

@@guayabito6946 that was on prupose. It was 1945, the war had just ended and there were many parents out there who had just lost their children. It was best not to go that deep into that emotion out of respect for the public. Also, it was not the same night when she told Monte she didn't want to talk about Kay, there was an undisclosed leap in the timeline, and as far as I remember, it was clear that she was avoiding the topic because it was a bad memory. Did you really pay attention to it? It seems like you don't know what you're really talking about.

My goodness, can anyone imagine having a spoiled, brat child, like this one? Odd, how Joan wouldn't spoil her own children. In spite of Joan's real life story -- she was a remarkable actor, one of the best. I've seen all her movies. Loved her rival, Betty Davis, as well. They both, were great actors. I think Joan had more depth, though. Thanks for the upload!

it's interesting that critics considered Bette the better actress. I don't agree. For example, I think Bette's early films from the 1930s are unwatchable, she's so bad. Of Human Bondage, for example: Better's awful attempt at a British accent! Joan's 1930's output on the other hand, is wonderful.

@@lukasmiller486 Her personal philosophy was that the children must come first, before either of them, which is a noble approach to child-rearing. Problem is, she didn't instill any values in Vera such as humility, gratitude, integrity, self-sufficiency...and Vera just became a taker.

One of my favorite scenes in this wonderful film. Why? Note Joan Crawfords "busy work". It's believable and totally realistic. Moving around her kitchen and cooking like she does it everyday. Delivering dramatic dialogue while doing it all too. She took the realism of this scene seriously and it shows.

So much more muted compared to the 2011 HBO version with Kate Winslet. That screenplay apparently followed the original book much more faithfully than the script for the 1945 film version. You can definitely see the influence of the natural, mumbling/yelling Method style of acting Marlon Brando introduced a few years later.
