The child actress who played the younger daughter, "Kay," Jo Ann Marlowe, came to a tragic end. She quit acting as a teenager and eventually became a federal attorney. However, in 1968, at age 33 she was involved in a car accident that left her in coma from which never recovered. She spent the next 23 years in that coma until her death in 1991.

Love this movie but I find it odd that a waitress can afford such a nice home and a maid.

She is not just a waitress. She is supposed to be a businesswoman who has 2 or 3 restaurant businesses. Maybe she could afford it. Anyway it's a Joan Crawford movie she liked everything over the top.

This was way back in the day when people could live off of minimum wage. Those times are long gone lol.

Kate Winslet is very influenced by Joan Crawford that's why she made the remake for television. But Joan was much better and was the queen. And the original movie is movie history.

@@11rokerito it was NOT a remake. The director himself said it was an adaptation of the NOVEL which was much darker. The original movie took at least a dozen re-writes before Warner approved the script and green-lit it to make it a movie in the '40s, even then they had to change the entire story and made Mildred Pierce more "Joan Crawford". Neither the Depression, the War or the rations were focal points in the original film. The modern adaptation could focus on some more darker elements of the novel and showcase the dysfunction of Mildred and Veda's relationship. Of course, it didn't need to be 5 episodes long. So they really can't be and shouldn't be compared. While it's true most of the dialogue appears to be lifted from the original film, but it wasn't a remake.

Look at 1:07 through 1:08. How Mike Curtiz, the director, didn't catch this, I don't know, but Butterfly McQueen looks right into the camera... and, right into our eyes. She knew exactly what she was doing. It's as if telling us exactly what she thinks of this uncredited role... the usual maid.
