Iron Maiden's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son was not only my introduction to concept albums but also the first record I ever took a, um, "mental journey" to lol Crazy story time...my mother spilled a pot of boiling water on her legs when she was a little girl. Her family was very poor and basically lived out in the middle of nowhere. She was in immense pain, her mother doing her best to attend to her blistered legs. The next day a family friend arrived with a woman she claimed was a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and that she had healing powers. My mother said the woman leaned down to her poor legs and began whispering over them. She finished and told my mom that she would feel better soon. My mother said that the next morning, as her mom was changing her bandages and cleaning her legs, the blisters washed right off like dead skin. The pain was completely gone, and there was no trace of blistering only nice pink skin. I looked into such phenomenon when I was young and found many other similar stories. They call it "talking the fire out". Up the Irons! 🤘

Consider the golden age ended on the last album, Somewhere in Time When they when full synth on this album, I lost interest to some degree.

Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son are the most progressive albums. The album and its cover are conceptual. That’s why they also came with the keys on their sound as it gives extra environment. The live stages on this period were also great. We need to appreciate their will to progress in their sound, although they always kept their sound and visual identity. Get ready for the title album song! Cheers! Up the Irons!

@@PrincessKagayaki Sorry, for Maiden synth was not what I liked. Synth act as filler. I fell in love with the music of NOTB and POM, even though, there are a couple good songs on this album. If you like I can give you some metal bands that are heavy/thrash metal, some you might already know - Metal Church, Exodus, Death Angel, Testament, Helloween, Kreator to name a few.

This is my IM´s fav album; and Infinite Dreams my fav IM´s song eveeeeer! It happened the same to me: I had to listen it to focus on the powerfull´s Bruce voice so many times; then, I had to focus on the guitars; then, in the bass lines and finally in the lyrics... and i am listening to it nos just because. The bass is harder to hear at first due to the synth rhythm recording and mix of the two guitars on this album. You get used to it and you’ll be able to pick out every bass note in time. The Harris bass click sound is brilliant on this album. Not too loud, just right. Loved the review Hurm1t! 🤘

Hello there! It’s a great concept album, whereas the opening song “Moonchild” is one of their standout openers (if you ask me). The tour for this album was amazing and Maiden opened their set with this song. Also, check out the California based all-women tribute band The Iron Maidens when they cover “Moonchild” live (it’s on youtube). It’s amaze-balls!!!

Moonchild is my favorite Maiden track and 7th son my favorite album….followed by Somewhere in time….guess for nostalgia reasons being these were the first two I heard from them back in the late 80s! Up those irons my man!

First heavy metal song I had ever heard was 'Moonchild' by Iron Maiden. For a 12 yr old kid who was raised on 70's disco music and Michael Jackson ... I was like, "What the hell did I just listen to??? How do I bop to this???" 😲 Little did I know... Steve Harris' bass is still strong on this track, but I guess it didn't have the trademark galloping that we were expecting... but it picks up on Harris' songs on the record, like 'Infinite dreams'... 'Seventh son of a seventh son'. A bit more keyboards on this one, and it's my fave Iron Maiden album, cos this record made me a fan, w/ 'Somewhere in time' 🤘🤘🔥🔥and then 'No prayer for the dying' (which was admittedly a bit different).

I remember a few friends had not really liked the synth direction Maiden was taking on Somewhere in Time and this album turned them off even more, said it was "too melodic" and Maiden had lost some of the heaviness on NotB and Peace of Mind, sounded they were trying too hard to get some radio airplay. I personally love Seventh Son, in my top 5 fave Maiden albums; and yes, the album cover, I dig it but it is kinda esoteric, like, where exactly is Eddie now? He was somewhere in the future now he's in the Arctic or something?

One more thing and I'll shut up; during the late 80's analog recording equipment was being replaced with digital equipment in many studios and producers were experimenting with the new digital gear, (or they had little choice,) so many metal albums of that era were recorded on analog tape then transferred to digital in the mix-down and mastering process, ADD [Analog-Digital-Digital] to accommodate for the shiny new Compact Discs that the industry were introducing and studio album sound quality suffered, everything got kind of squashed and flat sounding, lost some audio dynamic range with the compression.

Synthesised guitars and bass Hurm. That accounts for the “smothered” sound. Not crunchy guitars or string clacking bass. Ehhhh, that’s one reason I don’t rank this album huger. The other reason, Bruce’s vocals. He’s experimenting and and think his voice is transitioning to less traditional metal sound to more guttural new metal sound.

It took me a few listens to fully fall in love with this album but I put it top tier. Everybody is firing on all cylinders as usual but for me Dave Murray’s guitar work on this album absolutely blows me away! The only negative for me is the first half of the title track is a bit boring, underwhelming, and repetitive but the second half more than makes up for it. I wish this album was twice as long!

@@metalmark1214 … Mastadon’s Crack the Skye is a great album. I love early Fates Warning! Awaken the Guardian might be my fav from them. I was never a big Dream Theatre fan as the singer’s voice kinda bugs me. He reminds me of a singing boy hero from a Disney movie! Lol. But I admit they have some kick ass material. Octovarium (sp??) is amazing. Have you heard Pagans Mind? Their first 4 albums are metal prog goodness with a healthy dose of synth.

Songs like this are why i stopped listening or going to Maiden gigs after Piece of Mind. Sounds like Dickinson just wrote the lyrics regardless of the soundtrack and thought he'd keep them whether they worked with it or not. To me, an early Maiden fan, this sounds abysmal, sorry.

Welcome to the age of the Maiden with synth. Ugh! When asked in 80's about using synths, Bruce Dickinson said We're a heavy metal band, we don't use synths. Famous last words. Not a strong song to start an album. That great bass, that I love by Steve, that was prominent on earlier albums, not here. Bruce has a preoccupation with the afterlife and reincarnation on this album. This is considered a concept album. On to Infinite Dreams, a better track. This album has a couple good tracks at least, Hurm.
