Should be mentioned that early JAST/JSF/F-35 concepts also featured canards. Like the J-20, the canards were positioned in plane with the aircraft's wing (to conform with stealth plan form alignment), as opposed to the 4th gen's (Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter, Lavi, J-10) having canards out of plane, above the wing. This provides better stealth characteristics while sacrificing some aerodynamic performance. The Americans eventually dropped the JSF canards partly due to carrier landing characteristics, and some speculate that F-16 chief designer Harry Hillaker, who consulted on the JSF in his retirement, had a say in the matter. He was never in favor of canards and is quoted as saying something to the effect of: 'The optimum position for canards is on somebody else's aircraft.'

@@wageslave387 "Are Harry's opinions still relevant in this day and age though...?" Possibly. Note that almost all new stealth fighter designs feature a traditional aft tail design: The Russians (SU-57), Turks (TF-X), British (Tempest), French/German (FCAS), South Koreans (KF-21), Indians (AMCA) and Chinese J-31. And of course the F-22 and F-35. Though Hillaker was perhaps more concerned with aerodynamics than stealth. Right before Hillaker passed away, I was granted an unique interview to hopefully answer some of these questions. But that unfortunately didn't happen.

One thing i noticed early in the video, in a sequence of shots of the plane on runways, between about 1:54 and 2:07 time stamps, there's a tawny colored patch of color under most of the planes. This appears to be a pretty strong reflection of the dried grass off to the sides of the runway. Maybe nothing, maybe unfinished prototypes with just bare metal, but it seemed an unusual optical reflectivity of ambient light for any 'stealth' craft, like they could wind up visually appearing as a very bright spot in the sky. Not fully understanding here, just a bit of a 'hm'.

I guess deciding factor would be as you said the quality of stealth coating. Still waiting on that video about truth vs reality in Russian technology and how far behind they truly are. It's not considered to be an issue because unless the aircraft is orbiting around you, it won't provide that profile for very long. I just now watched a new 3 minute CCTV military recruitment video. The J20 made a 720 degree roll in about 1.5 seconds. The weird thing was during the roll the nose scribed a conical circle about +/- 10 degrees. Also during the roll, it looks like the angle of attack is increased by about 10 degrees (which would increase drag). Instead of a pure roll, it looked like it was corkscrewing. Why would the J20 aerodynamics do this if the intent was a high speed roll? Is Yaw performance involved? Is lift on the right side kicking in faster than the reduction in lift on the left side kicks in for some aerodynamic reason? You would think with 2 canards in the front and control surfaces on both wings in the back, they could keep the nose direction constant throughout the roll. This could be problematic if chasing another fighter aircraft (losing energy when keeping wings parallel to the wings of the fighter in the front quadrant, plus a tendency to change direction in a curved arc to the desired ADI vector instead of a linearly changing direction). Is this some kind of maneuver to slow the air speed because J20 has no speed brake? Last thing about it is … if the J20 is already pulling so many Gs it’s on the edge of departure, then performs this kind of high speed roll which creates more lift on one wing, then that wing may be prone to go turbulent and lose lift altogether … that would either reverse the roll or go into a spin or uncontrolled tumble. This is just my educated guess from observing the CCTV video. I still expect China to use the J20 for high speed sneak ambush missile shots from a distance at enemy fighters focusing their attention on close air combat with J10s and Flankers.

The fact that the chinese even decided to put a canard on a stealth aircraft means that they probably got the control system down to a notch. as computing capabilities were what limited the use of canards on earlier aircrafts.

I expect China to use j20 as ambush not just for high value air targets but also to participate in combined air combat at a distance, sneaking in some unexpected missiles from a distance while the enemy’s focus is on flankers and j10s which do all the close air combat. And I expect it to carry a couple large antiship missiles (as large as can fit inside the weapons bay). Regarding torsion, I expect the Canards to work in conjunction with other control surfaces to minimize torsion forces on the fuselage

The radar installed on the J-20 is almost definitely not KLJ-7A, since that is a relatively small radar mounted on JF-17 Block 3s and it doesn’t make sense for it to be mounted inside the large radome of the J-20. And it is most likely not Type 1475 radar either as that should be the radar of the J-16. Nobody actually knows what radar is mounted on the J-20. And the IRST system is also not the first one mentioned in the video, since it is not developed by a state institute like the optical institute in Luoyang known for producing optics for chinese fighters.

Nope. That was the initial guess and yes it will eventually have a missile (PL-17/21 depending on who you ask) that’s ultra long range and designed to take out large non manoeuvrable targets at 400km, however the standard medium/long ranged missile, the PL-15 is a Meteor class missile used for standard air superiority missions. Yes it’s preference will be to kill at range vs in a furball but that’s modern fighter doctrine anyways. If you’re dogfighting you fucked up.. and that’s in any modern aircraft.

@@freefall0483 They are building them in large numbers as their primary air dominance fighter. It’s their equivalent of the F-22 and there’s already a decent chance that they have built more of them than the American jet (150+ so far airframes with production ramping up). If you’re saying that the PLAAF is going to use it as a modern day F-14 (it’s Phoenix missiles were designed to do just that) then why build them in such numbers? Why make their primary weapon system the PL-15, a Meteor/advanced AMRAAM class weapon? Why is the only plane the PL-21 been seen so far tested on the J-16? Accepting what you say means that the Chinese have not only decided to massively over supply their forces with a niche weapon system, that they also have decided that they have no need for a modern 5th Gen air superiority fighter even though they obviously have the capability of doing so? It makes zero sense doctrinally for the Chinese to build so many if that was its sole mission while at the same time neglecting to build a much needed air superiority fighter. It makes even less sense if they did do that, for its weapons bay to be designed to fit 4 air superiority class missiles. The PL-21 is huge, a J-16D will likely be able to carry two externally. You’re wasting a stealth design if the primary weapon needed for its mission can only be carried externally, therefore mitigating any stealth the aircraft has. With a range of 400km the missile doesn’t need a stealth aircraft to carry it to begin, it will likely launch outside the detection range of any aircraft or at least under heavy jamming support against targets like AWACS. It literally makes no sense.

What I personally do not like, the side bays housing the (HOB?) Fox2 are obscured from the canards. Meaning in a dogfight the missile seeker can not "look up" because the canards are in the way. Thus for such situations launch parameters have to be gathered another way or the Fox2 can't be launched "up".

I love watching them even though they are bloody noisy. My question is, when they are on final approach, they ALWAYS maintain a bank angle of around 45 degrees until they are within a few seconds of touching down. @@Millennium7HistoryTech thanks for answering. No, this city is very flat- Townsville Queensland. It has always been a big Army and Airforce centre, in fact, my father was based here during WW2. It appeared strange the first time I watched the F35s on approach. I can watch it all from my sun deck. It is a busy commercial airport and I watch planes take off and land from 6.00am each day. The F35s tend to come in high and fast and they turn onto final quite late when compared to domestic aircraft. It may be a noise reduction thing? The bank angle must obviously increase the sink rate reducing the amount of city they overfly. Whatever the reason, it is spectacular to watch. Thank you again for responding.

here's an idea for a future video i always wondered why even for modern planes they choose hydraulics over electric actuators. from what i've read, in WW2 part of the Focke Wulf 190's success in combat was based on the fact that it used small electric motors to move the control surfaces which allowed it to shave off weight and maintain control in speeds where other planes could not because of the air pressure. the air pressure at high speeds wouldn't allow the wire or hydraulic system to deflect the control surfaces and the pilot would lose control but the electric motors of the 190 could overcome it. sure, hydraulics have come a long way since then but so did electronics and electric equipment is lighter than a system of tubes and pumps filled with liquid. so why are they still choosing hydraulics over electrical?

All modern earth moving equipment (bulldozers, excavators, etc.) use hydraulics. Hydraulics are definitely strong enough to move a control surface on a plane. While I think electric motors are lighter and simplify maintenance, they are not EMP resilient like hydraulics.

That said, is there an aircraft out there that hasn't suffered a variety of issues over development n acquisition? The Tomcat, F/A-18.. even the fantastic Eagle. The F-35 is transformative - I expect it to present a myriad of issues, some of which will never be fixed. The J-16... Operation 📎 Re: J-20 It’s a no-brainer here guys… The J-20’s *CONCEIVED HOT SPOTS*: *= the F-111 Aardvark’s of the Vietnam War…* Strike a cord here, guys? Similar to the B-58 of the 50’s and the F-111 of the 70’s, the J-20’s configuration was not meant as an air superiority specimen as per that of the F-22. With a coat of cloaking substrates, that job goes to the J-10, J-11, and J-16’s and maybe, just maybe - it also rests on the J-31’s which I bet they secretively fly *in squadron numbers* cuz of the sensitive natures of it... East Asians *don’t let good money go to waste*. Though they are secretive about their R&D’s as the Americans are about theirs, they have to be running these initial (Block 1’s or J-31’s) in squadron numbers in order to know it’s in’s and outs of it and in order for them to fiddle with it to advance it to the (Block II or the J-35 designation) and… If history if replication is any indication, a J-35 (C) or a VSTOL version of it is at the works given all of the 075 and 076 assault ships they are building so mark my word on this one. My two cents only so don’t hold me to this. .

One more observation of the J20. Looking at the large open weapon bay doors, the inside has an extremely anti-aerodynamic surface exposed to the wind stream. The doors may be inoperable at supersonic speed. This would be a huge limitation in firing PL15 missiles. If this is true, then it would affect tactics and performance. For example, when closing at supersonic speed, the J20 closing fast while hiding below the horizon or at least hiding in the ground clutter, would aggressively climb immediately before launching PL15s. The high altitude climb makes the J20 more detectable but drops air speed and air density to tolerable levels for the weapon bay door. Also the high altitude PL15 launch extends the missile envelope, but also increases the chance of being detected either through radar due to the open weapon bay door, and detected in IR due to the launch flair. Looking close at the J20 weapon bay, each side holding two PL15 missiles could hold one large non cylindrical missile with fives times the cross section area. This implies China may develop Anti ship missiles fitting inside the J20, each weighing about 1000 Kg.

I do have a doubt. The Su 57 has small vertical tails compared to the F 22 becoz its an all moving tail plane, which in fact gives more vertical plane surface compared to the F22. The J 20 also uses the similar all moving tail plane, hence having it smaller, but then y would it need the bottom 2 vertical plane? is the 2 top all moving vertical plane not enough surface?
