I like you Roger. You have a good attitude about raising orchids. I especially appreciate the bit about not doing panic. Raising orchids could make you crazy and biting your nails in the middle of the night if you don't have a good attitude. You can only do the best you can and that's enough

I suppose it's just a way of standing back and remembering that doing your best IS the best you can do but 'knowing' as much as you can about your plant's' needs sure helps.

Roger, I just got a milt.Belle Glade JC/AOS Everglades and it is planted in rock,gravel and it is really happy, Roots growing out of the pot, so I am putting it in a little bigger pot with gravel for the roots growing out of the smaller pot to grow into the gravel in the bigger pot. Am terrible with my camera . Will try to send a photo as she is quite lovely. Thanks for an update on what to do with her temperature wise.

roger, got some more miltoniopsis so am reviewing your old videos. Those black streaks on the leaves, Had some on my plant leaves, and wiped them down with alcohol, every week or so, and they never spread and the leaves are still alive. Don't know if it was pests or virus, but plant still alive and thriving.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai7 жыл бұрын
Miltoniopsis are prone to marks on the leaves - it may be a result of too much heat with too little humidity - I'm not sure. It doesn't seem to do the plants any harm. Some Oncidiums and Brassias are the same.
@alexandraabraham66985 жыл бұрын
Crinkly corrugated leaves are a sure sign of a Miltoniopsis plant needing water. If it has crinkly leaves, it's in need of a good soak. A good tip is to put the plants in clear pots, but to provide extra holes up the sides of the pot, as well. complete immersion in water until everything is wet, allow to drain really well, and then replace in a cool site. Here to help. ;0)

Hi Roger, I'm so glad you did a video on miltoniopsis. I have one (that's more than enough stress!) and I have a dilemma. It is looking beautifully healthy and still has one flower spike on it in full bloom as well as 2 new growths each around 3 inches long. So, the golden question....do I repot now or wait until spring? Bear in mind, I have had her for about 9 months and the media smells perfectly fresh...hmmm
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai8 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I wouldn't worry too much about the blooms - many repot orchids in full bloom and most are ok. The main thing is what is under those new growths - are the roots already showing? When they are about an inch long or thereabouts is good but don't damage them. As long as the rest of the orchid has a reasonable root system and the new roots are showing, you could do it now as there is still some growing season left. But if the media is fine and will last until spring when the next lot of new growths should start, then you could also leave it until then. No direct answer I'm afraid as it's difficult without having direct sight of the orchid.
@fionagrace21118 жыл бұрын
Hmm no new roots showing so I think I'll un-pot it tomorrow and see what's what! Thanks for your input Roger 👍

Thanks for sharing, I struggle with them, too, as many of us. Main problem, bought 3 from a rack table, were not healthy to begin with, only 1 survived the summer around here. I decided to only ever buy healthy, strong Miltoniopsis in the future, I have a window for them where summer will be fine for them next year, but to rescue them from the beginning...yeah, not a good idea. They will be kept with my future Masdies, Odontoglossums together. Hopefully!:) A question, how strong the fertiliser for them is good? Heavy feeders do not think, like Oncidiums? Have a nice day! BR, Maria
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai8 жыл бұрын
It's sad that so many orchids are sold in poor condition - it puts people off growing them when they die. I feed mine with the lowest levels of fertiliser and flush quite often - they are light feeders - it's the sensitive roots, yet another 'fussy' thing.

Thanks for this video! I’ve managed to keep a couple of miltoniopsis alive for the past year, and seem to be doing well in my home (temps 65-72 F, 50-70% humidity). I got two more from the grocery, potted in coco peat (which I think is awful). I repotted them into a moss/bark mix, which is what my other ones like. I was as gentle as I could be. Both freaked out in short order, and leaves and pseudobulbs started dying. One plant didn’t have any roots, and I ended up throwing it. The other had lots of roots, so I don’t know what’s wrong with it?? Certainly a dramatic response to being unhappy though 😂 Any ideas?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Could be many things - upset about the changes in environment, delayed reaction to various sets of transport and lack of care where you bought it from, change of media - almost anything will upset these.
@conradstarks31815 жыл бұрын
would egg shells or baking soda help keep the ph neutral?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Calcium in any form will raise the Ph. Baking soda is VERY strong - when I add my Kelp to a mix it drops the Ph way too low so I use Baking soda to raise it. In 3 litres of water a tiny bit on the end of my finger brings it back up.

Hi Roger, where do you get your miltoniopsis from? I live in the UK and can't find them anywhere, I also can't find them online in any nurseries in the EU! Totally at loss here
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai6 жыл бұрын
Miltoniopsis are normally only offered for sale when in bloom. Most of mine have come from garden centres and DIY stores that sell orchids - they just turn up every now and then. Although 'some' of the mass producers will handle these, they are not as 'sturdy' as other orchid types so are less popular with greater losses before selling.
@E3lxx6 жыл бұрын
Roger's Orchids thanks for the response! When do they generally bloom? I have heard spring and autumn but which months in particular?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai6 жыл бұрын
They bloom as the bulbs mature (or just before) and as this take 9-10 months, they can be in bloom anytime of year. Bulbs on these can take longer to mature in the UK Winter as the days are so short.

Thanks for the video, although I can't fully agree with everything you've said here. I actually keep my Miltoniopsis wet all the time, and even water twice a day on hot summer days. And of course that means repotting every autumn, so Orchiata bark would make no sense here. Anyway, it's time for me to repot mine, so I'm gonna make a video about it soon. And one more thing, nitrogen compounds (nitrates, nitrites and ammonium) are harmful to people, so if the tap water is intended for consumption, nitrates are only allowed in very small quantities in the water. So I'm guessing the TDS reading you get is basically calcium and magnesium salts. But you should be able to find that information by contacting your water provider, they have to make this info public. Sorry for the long post, and happy growing!
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai8 жыл бұрын
My water quality analysis is quite good although a bit 'hard' giving a higher PH than I would like (7.5) but there is 25mg/l of sulphate and nitrate, 2 of potassium and magnesium and 85 of calcium. What's left after my carbon filter has had a go at it I don't know, but it brings the TDS reading down from 270 to about 160 - this also gets the PH down to below 7 which is better. Everyone who successfully grows milts probably has different environments and adjusts their culture accordingly. After you've had yours more than a few months and have done your repots and got them through a Winter, I'll be interested to see how they have done. I'm not sure all of mine will make it but I hope they do as they really are one of my favourites. Don't worry about long posts - I enjoy reading the comments I get.
@orchidmaniac2348 жыл бұрын
Actually, one of my Miltoniopsis lives in my care for two years now, and it's doing reasonably good, given into consideration that it was nearly rootless when I got it, and that it had to spend two winters indoors where the humidity is barelly 35%. The only problem I have with it is that I've kept it a bit too bright this summer and the leaves got a bit pale with a red tinge to them. But as you have said, everyones environment is different and we all grow our orchids the way we can.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai8 жыл бұрын
Anyone who can keep these beauties going however they do it, gets a big tick - I have lost a few of these. I can get away with my high temps in Summer - but only just. Otherwise, I don't do 'too bad' with them. I just hope that couple of days of 'dry' hasn't set them back - a few weeks will tell - I don't normally let them get that dry.
@orchidmaniac2348 жыл бұрын
They might be stressed, but they should bounce back. My summers aren't any better. I have quite inconsistent temperatures, but it's not unusual to have a few weeks of 30 C or even more. That is exactly why I said you need to keep them watered, even if they are still wet. If the outside temperature is high, the temperature inside the pot is high too, and if you run a lot of water through the pot it will cool the roots down. Thus the orchid will only have one stress factor (outside heat) to deal with as opposed to two (heat and drought). Or at least this technique helped me to go through several summers without loosing my milts. But you are right, they are not easy to grow, and I sometimes think that Zygopetalums are much easier and more forgiving than these. At least they don't require such high humidity to begin with, and most of home growers struggle to keep it high enough for Miltoniopsis.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai8 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of pouring cool water through the pots several times a day during the heat-waves - I'm around most days so that would be easy for me to do. As long as the media drains, it should be fine - great idea and I will try that next Summer (if they get through the Winter ok that is).
