DT880 600ohms are my go to tube headphone. I use live Jazz (well mastered tracks) to test it. Jazz Drums are a big tell. The Tom-tom and kick drum on solid state sound flat/ in the background somewhat. With good tubes (that can power the DT880'S), they sound fuller and more prominent (sometimes bringing in an element of sub-bass frequencies). I listen out for the brass instruments as it determines how the mids are portrayed. The best budget tube amp for the DT880 is the Little Dot MK II (tube rolled, soviet tubes). Removes the treble spike and not much clarity is lost (I'm sure more expensive amplifiers will be better). Since having tubes, the DT880'S don't ever go on solid state.

Thanks to ZEOS I actually own Shiit Valhalla 2, it has the gain switch in the back of the unit and is equipped by default with old Russian tubes. I also switch regularly the preamp tubes with the British Mullard ones - it has more honey tube sound. Also, I have thanks to this man A90, Fiio BTR 5 , thieaudio legacy 3 and 5. And I just bought also Fiio M11 PlusLTD SS btw: I'm fan for a long time from the Czech Republic and Poland is our neighbor

(Relay) Delay timer boards for tube amps have been with us since the 70s . But seeing them put a smaller miniaturized updated version in tube headphone amps is a definite upgrade. And long overdue. Soft starting tubes this way extends tube life. Nice. But wow $$$

@PastafarianLemur3 жыл бұрын
That's good to hear! Just recently got the R70x and have been trigger shy on the TA-26 amp. I've also got the DT990 @ 600 Ohm. The closest thing to "tubey" I run them on is the Project Polaris solid state amp that uses a JFET to give it a bit of 2nd order distortion. But while the Polaris sounds more lively than your typical SS amp and extends echoes/reverb (wider sounding) it doesn't have the tube warmth/sweetness.

This may just be me entirely talking out my ass, since I don’t have a lot of experience with tons of different headphones and amps to compare.But to answer which headphones I like with tubes, my AKG K701. The tube amp I use probably barely even counts compared to real shit like these, but I got the single ended Little Bear portable tube amp you reviewed a while back. That and the Fiio Q5S were the first amps I had to drive this, and even though the Little Bear is “worse” by quite a ways as far as things like detail are concerned, I still find myself grabbing that one a lot. On my desk I have the Yulong Aquila II and that thing sounds WAY better than both the portables. I think I prefer the tubiness in terms of overall sound profile, but the Aquila just delivers so much, uh, more? More sound, more details and clarity and just.. everything. And it should for the price, but yeah, it’s great. But back to the point, I really love my K701s, and for being a pretty cheap headphone, they scale really well. I can easily tell the difference between the tubiness and solid state, and between the protable Fiio and what extra stuff I’m getting from the Aquila. IIRC, Z said about the more expensive K712 that it took well to tubes. And actually, I own those as well. The K712 is nicer, kind of. But honestly, I just don’t like it nearly as much as I love the K701. The pads are stiffer, the leather comfort strap is stiffer. The glossy plastic feels cheaper than the nicer matte finish of the 712s. And this stupid damn mile long attached cable that terminates in 1/4”!! But none of that matters! It sounds better! It’s like they had this perfectly good K701 and were like, “well shit, we haven’t made a new headphone in a decade, we should probably do that. What do people want? More bass? Idiots.. Whatever, put that in. New pads? Okay yeah fair enough. Easier to drive? Ugh fine. Kay, here’s your K712. Enjoy” The K701 is flatter and wider, and I think, if anything, this not only just sounds better, but those along with requiring a bit more juice make it take to a tube (well the only cheap little tubes I can test, anyway)even better than the 712. In general, at least to my ears, it being flatter means I can pull it a little bit louder than the 712s which end up getting to be too much sooner. That and just wanting a little more power anyway feels like it’s dragging more of that tube sound out of the amp. And being wider I think plays well with the tubes too. It’s like, when you add to something, you can either try to fix something - like add space to a normally cramped sound - or, enhance what is already great - give more, or maybe make better use of, the already awesome soundstage of the 701s. And I think with the tubes on it, it’s doing exactly that. I’m probably going to buy this Xduoo. I don’t really want to get into the higher price range these other ones are in, and I’ve really been wanting more tube to complement the nice desktop amp. As for music to show off tubes, hmm… I think acoustic is definitely a good start. To me, I think anything that’s a bit more laid back or slow where the individual notes can shine through better will be good. And STRINGS! The way they just carry that slight bit longer through the space of the tubes is awesome. As I’m typing this, I’m listening to Vitamin String Quartet Performs Lana Del Rey, and it’s just fantastic. Thanks for doing some more tube amp reviews, I think this Xduoo is exactly what I was looking for. I should probably try some more headphones at some point, instead of buying more amps worth multiple of the headphones I’m plugging into it…

My M-Audio Q40's, in theory, shouldn't match well with tubes as they are low impedance, but for some reason they do. Q40's are amazing for the price. Strong 3D effect, timbre that much pricier cans could only wish for and bombastic bass. A tube headphone amp with 3 impedance matching settings (similar to gain) is an Icon Audio HP8 MKII (low/med/high). I'm running one paired up with ZMF Aeolus cans and a Musician Pegasus. Been in audio heaven for the last month.

All songs and audio sound better through tubes. So nothing in particular. To show off the larger soundstage of tubes, pick any song with wide panned elements. Tubes make sounds "jump" out a bit. On speakers, tubes give you HOLOGRAPHIC IMAGING in addition to the larger soundstage due to head transfer function.

Zeos, are all tubes generic in their use? I have a crate(big box) of television/radio tubes from the 40s/50s in my dad's workshop, are they useable for anything or are they either radio tubes or picture tubes? Is it a case of if it fits it'll work, wheather for good or bad is indifferent,.will they do work? 😂😂😂 are they worth anything? I wouldn't have a purpose for them, no good to me but at same time I'm not throwing out a box of tubes that's been there since at least the 60s

if the model numbers match it should work. But if you need a pair of the same you might have to match them to not get an imbalance.

Nope. According to the website, one of the tubes is functioning as a power stage. There's also 'conventional' tube amps that use output transformers, which is different from a hybrid (full solid state with tube preamp)
