It is true it’s hard alone , some people think it’s right for them to have one but I don’t think they understand how hard it is on the child , I close friend once said to me (whilst I was pregnant with my second ) that she would never have a second as she loved her son too much .. my reply was I also love my son so much that’s why I’m giving him the gift of a sister ... she literally said she would have an abortion if she had another anyway ... a year on and she’s had a second !

I think what Alex says is very real and true to what many fathers experience in the beginning. They don’t connect the same way with the baby because they are not involved in the baby as much as the mothers are. Alex is not afraid to talk about the hard stuff and being true to what he felt, I think he should have a BIG thumbs up!

I'm glad you mentioned the fact that it's not fair to the child if you have one and then don't spend time with them. It's a very important aspect in my eyes and personally I think if you're not willing to sacrifice your time for your child, then you shouldn't have one. Which is one (of the many) reasons I made the decision to stay childless. I love children and worked as a nanny several years but I don't want one for myself.

I was jst now thinking to myself that i need to fast forward to the end because i cannot watch the whole thing for the very issue that you've brought up. To me, it should be the number one rule when vlogging as a couple. Dont interrupt. That and dont disrespect your partner during film and in my observation its mostly the female who has this bad habit. For the viewer it's very off-putting and I wish they'd pay better attention to these comments.

I think it all depends on what your priorities are. For some parents, having children feels like the missing piece to their lives, but for others it’s not their entire lives, just one part of it. Although we don’t know your lives in detail, the parts you share with us make it seem like you guys had a hard time adjusting since you expected your lifestyle to go back to the way it used to be as quickly and as easily possible, which in reality may never happen.

So, basically, you guys OUTSOURCED every single parenting activity (sleep training, babysitting, etc). You travel, take daily walks, go to the park, have a personal trainer, but COMPLAIN about not having enough freedom anymore. Your experience is the OPPOSITE to a normal parenting experience! Im sure you guys thought the baby would adapt to your lifestyle and when you realised she wouldnt, of course you decided you wouldnt have any more children. Spending too much time growing businesses and making alot of money instead of growing your family and thinking about your baby and what they want and need is sad because shes going to grow up and will question why she doesnt have a sibling and your reason for that isnt a very good one. All you're thinking about is business business business. When it comes to kids you should make time for them. I raised my baby who is 10 months old all by myself with no help from my family and I had him at 20 and I'm 21 now. It's a huge learning experience but it's so worth it.

To be responsible is different than being controlling. As your viewers, we knew that you didn't' have a clue what is to be a parent. Everyone passes that stage. It was just annoying to hear your strong opinions and after a while to see that you are doing the opposite (a good example is using the stroller). And some of us also have multiple business and multiple children, but we stay humble.

Please think long and hard before deciding to only have one child. Think about how much you love your sister leyla. Why would you want to deny Alexa of that? I’m an only child and I was of course very happy as a child but now that I’m older there’s a relationship that’s missing in my life and I feel it. I had the same experience as an only child and when I see my friends with siblings, it always makes me feel sad that I will never have that bond with someone. But I think the worst thing to do is to have a child because 'you should', so I totally respect it if a couple only wants one :) In the end, there is never a 'perfect' number of kids to have.

I'm so glad you made this video, making the other video would be great too. As parents with a 15-month old baby, we thought that we were the only ones going through the challenges of having our 1st child. I'm glad to see that we're not the only ones, everything you went through, we went through too and managed to get through it too. It's also a great video to prepare couple thinking of having a baby! I wish I had seen this 2 years earlier lol! We've been through sleepless nights, sick baby, breastfeeding difficulties, finding time for our partners, baby tantrums and we've now managed to get a good routine, our baby sleeps through the night (since 11 months old) and we make time for ourselves and each other. Everyday brings a new challenge but as long as we get the right help and the parents join forces, anything is possible. Thank you again for making this video, look forward to the next one :) x

I'm just watching this for the first time (not sure how I missed it - must not have had that bell on!). My son is six months younger than Alexa so I love watching/reading your parenting videos/posts as a hint at "what's to come". It is so refreshing to see someone with a similar attitude to parenthood to me - Mimi; I also definitely feel like as a mother you have your heart walk around outside your body all day. I am not sure if this intensity fades as the child grows older (I hope it does, or school is going to make me very sad, let alone adulthood) but I too physically and emotionally pine for my son when we're not together. I work normal office hours four days a week - on one of those days my husband and son spend time together (my husband also works four days), and the other three he goes to nursery. This is the best balance we could achieve, so our son spends more time with a parent than in childcare. He LOVES it but I still feel a lump in my throat when I walk back to the car after dropping him off, and he's now 21 months old. I like a lot of your philosophies on parenting but one I can't quite get my head around or understand is the sleep training - as an Attachment Parent I couldn't stand to see my son cry for me, though I'm sure you're right about it being effective as he still likes to breastfeed to sleep or falls asleep in a moving car or pushchair (except at nursery - then it's peer pressure and they all nap together). How did you manage to tolerate the 24 hours with the consultant and sticking to her plan when you do feel such a responsibility and deep love for Alexa? Did you also stop breastfeeding Alexa if she wakes at this time, or did she literally sleep through straight away so "night weaning" was never an issue for you? I don't mean this to sound critical - I am asking for advice. As for my biggest thing I learned since becoming a parent that would be that you really learn who you can count on, and who your true friends are - I'm still surprised to this day about who makes the effort to see me to suit my son's schedule (ie. not after his bedtime!) and who let me drop off the radar when I had him. We have one set of grandparents living locally (a 20 minute drive away) and they are not really involved in his life any more than those who are a 2-hour drive away. So it's just me and husband, and I love how close it makes it, although like I say it has been interesting to see which old friends I still have, what the new ones I've made have been like, and who we can count on if we need help with our son.

One thing I love about your videos is how deep and dense they are. I always find myself pausing them after every few minutes, do some mindless things and process what I just heard, think about it, digest it until I can hit 'play' again and go on with the video. I think it's beacuse by watching you, both my brain and heart and intellect and self-awereness are stimulated. I can't watch them with just half attention. Even if you have full-time childcare, you have to be fully present in your child's life. Most people are working while their children are in childcare, so they in many respects end up working two jobs and feel the burden of being completely present once they are present with the child. Moreover, Alexa is now at an age when she would seriously benefit from going to daycare part-time. There has been a good amount research showing the benefit of peer-to-peer learning from children especially while they are toddlers. It helps with social skills as well as language and communication skills.

What I learnt becoming a parent is what ever I do I can’t protect baby, because I don’t deserve my baby. I was following Mimi since I was pregnant and I gave birth to my baby the same month as Mimi, I still breast feeding my daughter, I was all the time feeding her organic food and taking care of her. But what happened is that my daughter was diagnosed with a cancer 4 months ago, and she is treated by chimio therapy.. thatis very hard to me, I have a huge pain in my heart, I can’t sleep, I cry everyday, I wish if it is just a nightmare what iam living

Really like this video. My only other thought would be that I disagree with what you said about being ready to have a child. My first child was born when I was just 24 years old. I was no where near “ready” having just launched my career and having my partner leave me when we found out we were pregnant. I was not ready to become a single mom. But I never resented her for it. I became so attached and in love with her from day 1, there was no room left for resentment of any kind. Just thought I’d give my perspective since I have heard that a lot and it definitely was not my experience. My first daughter is now a happy 7 year old and I have 2 more sweet little ones with my husband of 4 years. Very happy I didn’t wait until I was “ready” even though the learning curve was big being a single mom. It was worth it 100%. 👍🏻☺️

Really great video and something I would love to have seen in the early days of parenthood! I'm sure this will help lots of new parents. I found as my children grew older it moved from being an emphasis on physical challenge and tiredness (you seem to be constantly breastfeeding, changing nappies, bathing, trying to get them to sleep etc) to dealing with mental challenges. Their upset when they get picked on at school or can't understand something or (at the toddler stage) want to do EVERYTHING themselves even when it's dangerous or not possible ;-). And of course with teenagers it's the worry of having to let them have some freedom and to travel to school alone etc...and that feeling when they are late home for some reason or another and have forgotten to warn you. In general - one thing I would add is that it worth remembering the mantra 'this too shall pass'...With parenting just as you've finally figured out something a new challenge rears itself...but you soon start to discover that each one will resolve with time ....so when there is a new sleep issue or your previously perfect eater suddenly refuses every form of vegetable just try not to catastrophise (this was in my case...Mimi and Alex are probably far too sensible to do this) and realise it's not the end of the world and you (and your baby will get through it)...my two are 9 and 15 now so I've gone through quite a few of the stages now!

Very cool video about parenthood but I sensed Alex is very cold towards parenthood, almost like it’s a “Mimi’s thing”, my husband and I have a child the same age of Alexa and he’s totally melted by the experience, here it’s almost like Alex is an outsider, detached

I don't really know where to start... 30 mins of my life I'm not getting back. 1) Mimi, when you say you're too responsible you actually mean "controlling". 2) Most parents WORK full time jobs and childcare is not optional, not all parents are running their own businesses from home. Oh, and this does not mean they're "not present". 3) Alex, "third world countries" and "dirty water" = not the best choice of words in the UK (or anywhere) it's just awful that you think that way. 4) CHECK your privilege before speaking if you want to make a favour to the online parenting community, and acknowledge that what you do and have is not the reality of most people and perhaps that will make you connect with other parents in real life. Oh also, check the research on benefits of toddlers interacting with other toddlers, maybe you'll change your mind about childcare.

Not even going to get to the "third country" thing cause as a person born and raised in a DEVELOPING country that just makes me very hurt. All that travelling and books and people learn nothing!

Ana Melissa Zárraga Zamora I think the reason why Mimi is like this is because she once said she grew up in a war torn country with not very much. It is from my experience from watching her videos for so long that she is the way that she is. I think she is trying to overcompensate for something now as an adult and these are things that maybe she didn’t have growing up as a child... everyone has issues and everyone is a little bit broken from something in life.... and it usually projects in our lives in one way or another at one point.. I think that is why Mimi is the way that she is. A perfectionist and tries so hard to create a perfect image on social media I understand her.... it’s weird but I do...but what does bother me is that people who have lived and grown up with not very much as children shouldn’t be talking or acting like pompous high horse elites now that she’s away from all of that.

i've been following you for over 4 years now i guess, and i cannot express how grateful i am or express the amount of lessons i've learned ... today you taught me again that parenting isn't like how media shows it as a huge boring responsible experience but it is more of dedicating yourself to a small human being and giving him/her an endless love. I'm way younger than having a child but now i can not only accept the fact that one day i will be a parent but also love it ... so thank you very much 😄❤❤❤ keep being yourself ❤❤

My son just turned one year old... He's finally starting sleeping through the night. It's definitely been a journey. But i agree that the sleep is the MOST important part of raising a child. Sleep=happy baby=happy parent! Loved hearing your journey because from your videos it always seem that you haven't really struggled with these kind of problems. I always like when people are open and honest about parenthood, because a lot of people get so much out of this knowing they are not the only one who has struggles. A very real video with great advice and insight. A lot of just don’t talk about some of the things you touched on. What stuck with me the most was when you talked about being spontaneous vs having a routine with a child. That is so relatable to me. Not only having a routine but with a child you have to be consistent. For instance, if you are working out and you lose a day or two of consistency it’s not a big deal but that’s not the case with kids. Giving someone that consistency every single day is I believe a huge challenge for many and something to really think about before having kids. One thing to add make sure that division of tasks and care are agreed on as much as possible. After having a baby it can be tough when you thought you would receive more help from your partner than you actually do. Maybe something to touch on in your next video regarding your relationship after baby. Thanks guys!

My son broke his "habit" of falling asleep at the breast all by himself, when he was ready... no expensive sleep trainer required. It's just a question of accepting this "habit" as something any baby under one has... so it's not so much a habit as a natural instinct... if most children in the world do it, how can it be something unnatural?

I love this video! My Dad and Step-mom had 3 kids when I was in High School and it was shocking how much work it was for all of us. And what you said about the first 3 months..lol. I think with each child I blocked out that first 3 months. I was also a full-time nanny to 3 kids when I was in my early/mid-20's. However, I think being an actual parent would be entirely different. I love seeing how much you both are involved in Alexa's childhood. She is such a sweet, cute little lady

These adjustments and discussions you spoke about after having Alexa, is very normal in every new parents’ relationship. The key is to talk about them and figure out your style of parenting and your expectations of your relationship as a couple and as parents ( two totally different things). Before becoming parents, my husband and I could finish the other one’s sentence and knew each other’s values, likes and dislikes, and tolerance levels. Shortly after the birth of my first baby, I realized and alien had over taken my husbands body! It was as if he was competing with the baby in some respects and yet his love was obvious! It took months of arguing and insisting on talking about every aspect of child rearing and what kind of a person we were hoping to raise and how our relationship would have to look that we found peace. Spend as much time with her as you can without forgetting to feed your own souls. Time flys and they really do grow up in a blink of an eye.

I’m absolutely baffled that two such incredibly intelligent people would go to such lengths to inhibit a very small child’s natural development to satisfy they’re own selfish wants. How do you think humans have been parenting for the last few thousand years? Certainly not with cribs in a separate room and sleep trainers. A 5 month old/12 month old/18 months old is not meant to be independent of its mother/parents... these aren’t bad habits that need to be broken, they’re things that a child will move on from when developmentally appropriate for that individual child. I’m no expert, I’ve only got 5 kids, but it seems illogical to me to cuddle up to my partner every night and enjoy the comfort and security that being with him brings while my young child “self soothes” herself elsewhere.

I love seeing this video. Not because I agree with or learn from it, just because you are present with your lifestyle. What I would say, is not every minute and hour of the day has to be hard work and analysed throughout. To be a good parent is very much instinctive too, and not only by mother, also by father (for example my second child has so close relationship with his father, they click from birth somehow and he made all his milestones with his support, not mine..and I really tried). I had my first after we were together almost 6 years with my partner, second child came 7 years later. Mostly because my first pregnancy was hard, stressful, our growing with child was somehow chaotic, sleep training and developing etc. First time I was control freak and stressed over my child not acting as predicted after huge amount of analysing and planning, cutting of my plans, friends..a lot. I think every parent knows those moments. So one day I realised, the key is to give in and look at her and be more support and suggesting-directing, not commanding. My second baby was easier pregnancy, very dificult childbirth... also sleeping-eating and his developing schedule was not as we expected. Still we had decided to make third child sooner (22months apart). Oh boy this was tough year, we were expecting it to be hard..but as you know the highs and lows come and go. Now I truly see what close sibling really means. Having someone daily to play with, learn and grow with is giving them a massive amount of joy I could never fulfil. Being 7 years with only child was so much more work, planning and stress, than with more kids. Don't get me wrong..I had playdates for my firstborn, schedule and plans, trips etc, every single time someone hinted me to make sooner another child for her to play with, I was about to scream. Yesterday we talked about our children with my partner and we both agreed that we wish we had second child sooner, because we see every day what she actually missed. My daughter told me the other day she did not realise what love grows really means, but after having brothers she actually sees it herself :) I think still planning a family is every families decision and should be respected in every way. Please do not see my comment as disrespectful, I just hope someone like me sees this and dares to jump into this chaotic, but amazing decision :)

Loved the video! Since I had my kid, and he is the same age as Alexa, I’ve learned that I am much stronger than I though, I’ve learned to be more patience, to judge less other parents, that a routine is fundamental to both the kid and the parent and, last but not least, it made me want to be a better person and professional so that he can look up to me and so that I can provide to him. I’m now pregnant of my second child :) new challenges on the way :)!! Love being a mom! Best gift ever!

Yes ,having a child is a lot of work. But it is the most rewarding feeling ever. Every milestone they go through is different and cherish each moment I spent with them. Specially from newborn to two. Love this video, thank you! My little one is a year and 2 months, and I relate so much to this video. Basically everything Mimi said has reflected my experience so far as a career-driven mama. Pre-baby I remember thinking "I'm not going to approach this like baby is weighing me down, or like I've lost freedom; I'm going to do all the same things I used to do... just with baby!" While I commend my positive approach, I now laugh at my naiveté 😆There is a lot of freedom (& time!) lost that I didn't quite even realize I had to begin with, haha!
